Gold Derby can now report that Saoirse Ronan is officially making an awards move long expected. The four-time Oscar nominee will campaign as Best Supporting Actress for “Blitz,” avoiding a possible vote split with her other big contender of “The Outrun,” which has her as Best Actress.
From Apple Original Films, “Blitz” has yet to me seen by major critics or festival crowds but is one of this year’s hottest contenders from past Oscar champ Steve McQueen. It will debut at the BFI London Film Festival on October 9. Its theatrical opening is a month later on November 1. And then it’ll be on Apple TV+ starting on November 22.
For this movie, Ronan plays the distraught mother of a young boy (Elliott Heffernan) who goes on a perilous adventure during World War II. It co-stars Harris Dickinson and is written, directed and produced by McQueen. View the trailer below:

Earlier this year, Christopher Nolan finally won Best Director at the Academy Awards. He picked up prize for helming Best Picture champ “Oppenheimer.” That victory came after five prior Oscar nominations, all of which ended in losses. Anyhow, Nolan has now finally been given the rewards his talents deserve. But there are still plenty of filmmakers who are overdue a Best Director gong. Scroll down for a list of five overdue filmmakers who could compete for the award at the 2025 Oscars.
Pedro Almodóvar
Almodóvar has five Oscar nominations and two victories to his name, so he may not seem overdue. He was nominated for Best Foreign Language Feature Film in 1989 for “Woman on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” and in 2000 for “All About My Mother.” He won for the latter. He was then nominated for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay in 2003 for “Talk to Her,” winning for his writing.

Steve McQueen’s World War II epic Blitz lands in November, and here’s the first trailer for the film right here.
Just yesterday we reported that Steve McQueen could be heading to the small screen, collaborating with Amazon Studios on a TV series with something of a dystopian bent. While we wouldn’t be opposed to seeing McQueen tackle long-form storytelling, we’re first looking forward to what is surely his most commercial feature film, the epic World War II drama, Blitz.
As the title suggests, the action will be set amid the horrendous bombings that rained down on London (and other British cities) throughout World War II.
The synopsis for the film reads as such:
Blitz follows the epic journey of George (Elliott Heffernan), a 9-year-old boy in World War II London whose mother Rita (Saoirse Ronan) sends him to safety in the English countryside. George, defiant and...

Across his career, British director Steve McQueen has always proved ambitious – whether directing all five instalments of Small Axe, flirting with blockbuster territory in Widows, or unflinchingly conjuring American history in 12 Years A Slave. And his latest is not only another film set in the past, but it once again finds him working on a big canvas – get ready for Blitz, set in World War II amid the (you guessed it) London Blitz, as the capital city is devastated by enemy bombers. Caught in the middle of it all is 9-year-old George (Elliott Heffernan), sent away by his mother Rita – played by Saoirse Ronan – to safety, but inadvertently caught up in the middle of the conflict as the city blazes around him. Watch the trailer here:
While there have been plenty of World War II films in recent years, few have gone into the heart of the Blitz – and McQueen’s film,...

U.K. artist turned filmmaker Steve McQueen has followed all kinds of topics in his short but compelling feature-film career: slavery in “12 Years A Slave,” the Irish troubles in “Hunger,” British racism, and Black lives in the 1970s in his “Small Axe” film anthology, and for his latest film, “Blitz,” he recalls the German air raid bombings of London during WWII known as the blitzkrieg.

Saoirse Ronan plays a distraught mother searching for her missing son in World War II East London in the trailer for Steve McQueen’s Blitz, which dropped on Thursday.
The drama follows George, a 9-year-old boy, played by Elliot Heffernan, in wartime London after his mother Rita (Ronan) sends him as an evacuee to safety in the English countryside. But defiant and determined to get back home on his own to his mother and grandfather Gerald (Paul Weller) in East London, George encounters real danger as a distraught Rita tries to find her footloose son as he faces mounting peril.
“Why can’t you tell me, where’s my boy?” Rita pleads with London police officers at one point in the trailer. Meanwhile, George is seen scurrying for shelter alongside other Londoners in underground subway stations or bombed-out buildings as German Luftwaffe planes continue to bomb the British capital’s east end.

It’s an often-touted cliche that a great way to win an Oscar is for a performer to portray a real-life person. Cillian Murphy won Best Actor earlier this year for playing J. Robert Oppenheimer in “Oppenheimer,” Jessica Chastain took home Best Actress in 2022 for her portrayal of Tammy Faye Bakker in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” and Rami Malek won Best Actor in 2019 for his depiction of Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
It’s curious, then, that Best Actress has often been rewarded to performers playing fictional characters rather than real people. Over the past decade, 28 of the 50 nominations have been for original turns, with a whopping seven of those winning out of 10. Here’s the complete breakdown.
Two out of 2024’s Best Actress nominees were nominated for playing fictional people. The others were Annette Bening (“Nyad”), Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), and Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”). However,...

Exclusive: It was the faded monochrome photograph of a small Black boy, both hands gripping a valise, as he leaves London with a party of other school-age evacuees, that caught Steve McQueen’s eye while he was researching his Small Axe film anthology.
“I just wanted to know who he was … what was his story?” the Oscar-winning 12 Years a Slave filmmaker recalls thinking when Deadline met up with him to talk about his thrilling, deeply personal new movie Blitz. It’s set in 1940 wartime London, when Hitler’s Luftwaffe unloaded its payloads and pounded the city seemingly nonstop for eight months.
The movie, a Lammas Park, Working Title and New Regency production for Apple, will have its world premiere October 9 as opening-night film of the BFI London Film Festival at the Southbank Centre.

Are you still buzzing from “Hacks” huge upset win over “The Bear”? Well, keep that energy and bring it into next year. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are with their ridiculously early 2025 Emmy predictions.
In comedy, most of the current Best Comedy Series lineup will be eligible, including “Hacks,” which starts filming Season 4 next week, and “The Bear,” which will compete for its divisive third season. “Abbott Elementary” and “Only Murders in the Building” will also be eligible for their respective fourth seasons, while “What We Do in the Shadows” will try to go out with a bang for its sixth and final season. But after missing the 2023-24 cycle, can “Wednesday” crack the field again — and can “Shrinking” score a series nomination for first time? And what new comedies will make a splash?
See Experts slugfest: 2024 Emmys recap — how did ‘Hacks’ pull off that shocking win?...

Previously known for roles in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” “Scream 5” and TV’s “Better Things,” 25-year-old Mikey Madison achieved a breakthrough earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival as the title character in “Anora,” which ended up winning the Palme d’Or. Will there be room for two Oscar winners from the same movie this awards season?
Pedro Almodóvar’s exciting melodrama “The Room Next Door” is riding high after winning the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and Sony Pictures Classics is preparing for an aggressive awards campaign for the film. Variety has learned exclusively that the movie’s two Oscar-winning stars, Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, will be positioned for lead actress consideration in the upcoming awards season. In addition, co-star John Turturro is set to campaign for his first Oscar bid in the best supporting actor category.
The film is adapted from Sigrid Nunez’s novel “What Are You Going Through” and tells the story of two women — war correspondent Martha, played by Swinton, and author Ingrid, portrayed by Moore — who reunite after many years under emotionally charged circumstances. The nuanced performances and intimate narrative have garnered critical acclaim.

I wrote not too long ago about Saoirse Ronan‘s dual possible Oscar vehicles: “The Outrun” and “Blitz.” Well, there has been a shift in the momentum. “The Outrun” has started to outrun “Blitz” as Ronan’s better chance for Best Actress. Now that’s the film that puts her in the top five.
SEEOscar odds update: ‘The Brutalist’ soars in several races, including Best Picture, after Venice premiere
Based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users as of this writing, Ronan ranks fifth with 14/1 odds for “The Outrun” and seventh with 15/1 odds for “Blitz.” Nicole Kidman is the meat in a Saoirse sandwich, ranked sixth with 14/1 odds for “Babygirl.” It helps that many film journalists have already seen “The Outrun,” which premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival. Her performance in it has been described as “tremendous,” “phenomenal” and “towering.”

At the most recent Oscars, Emma Stone became the lucky 13th winner of two Best Actress awards when she picked up the prize for “Poor Things”; she had prevailed seven years earlier for “La La Land.” When she won back then Stone was 28 and joined the ranks of 31 other winners in their 20s. Another 35, including Stone the second time around, have been thirtysomething when they took to the stage to collect their Oscars.

Timothée Chalamet is currently riding high on success with back-to-back successful projects. His last film Dune: Part Two secured the spot of the fourth-highest-grossing movie of 2024. Sadly, the 28-year-old actor also had a chance to star in Greta Gerwig’s highly successful Barbie, but missed it due to scheduling conflicts.

Previously, Timothée Chalamet had worked with Greta Gerwig in 2017’s Lady Bird and 2019’s Little Women. The Oscars will surely knock on Pedro Almodóvar’s door this awards season.
Pedro Almodóvar’s expansive filmography has shaped international cinema for over four decades. The Toronto International Film Festival reserves its opening weekend for world premieres — as in, films that did not previously screen at Sundance, Cannes, Venice or Telluride. Unfortunately for the fest, it seems like most of this season’s movies with serious awards prospects opted not to wait. Cases-in-point: two films that debuted in prime slots on Friday night, Unstoppable (5:30 p.m. at Roy Thomson Hall) and We Live in Time (9:30 p.m. at the Princess of Wales Theatre). Both are very engaging and moving, but also have very narrow awards paths moving forward.
Unstoppable, the directorial debut of the Oscar-winning film editor William Goldenberg (2012’s Argo), recounts the real story of Anthony Robles, who was born with one leg and into a broken home but nevertheless manages to become a world-class college wrestler. Jharrel Jerome, a gifted Emmy winner for When They See Us, does a particularly fine job playing Robles,...

The U.K. and Ireland box office reached £120.2 million ($158.2 million) in August, marking the highest monthly total since July 2023’s £160 million ($210.5 million) “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, per numbers from Comscore.
