Camila Mendes (Riverdale) has landed the role of Teela in the forthcoming, live-action Masters of the Universe film from Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films, Deadline has learned.

Mendes stars opposite the previously announced Nicholas Galitzine, who plays He-Man. Her character, Teela, is a warrior who as Captain of Eternia’s Royal Guard, is responsible for protecting the royal family, especially Prince Adam aka He-Man.

Based on the iconic Mattel franchise, the film’s plot is being closely guarded. Laika’s Travis Knight is directing the pic from a screenplay by Chris Butler. David Callaham and Aaron and Adam Nee worked on the initial draft. Previously in development at Sony and Netflix, Masters of the Universe is being produced by Escape Artists and Mattel Films for release exclusively in theaters worldwide on June 5, 2026.

Camila Mendes, the actress perhaps best known for playing Veronica in the CW series Riverdale, has nabbed the key role of Teela in Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films’ live-action take on Masters of the Universe.

Mendes will star opposite Nicholas Galitzine (The Idea of You), who is playing the role of He-Man in the adaptation of the popular toy brand first introduced in the 1980s. Travis Knight, the founder of stop-motion powerhouse Laika who directed the company’s Kubo and the Two Strings, is helming the film.

Nicholas Galitzine has signed on to play the role of ‘He-Man’ in the long in development ‘Masters of the Universe project at Amazon MGM.

The project has had a turbulent ride to make it to the big screen starting life at Warner Bros. and Sony before moving to Netflix, which scrapped the film in 2023 over budget concerns.

Based on the 1982 action figure. Plot details are being kept under wraps. However, according to a prior synopsis from the studio, the movie follows Prince Adam a.k.a. He-Man, who crashes to Earth in a spaceship as a child and, decades later, returns to his home planet to defend it from the evil forces of the baddie known as Skeletor. But to defeat the powerful villain, he needs to uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man, referred to in this world as “the most powerful man in the universe.”

Did you know that a new live-action He-Man and the Masters of the Universe movie is being worked on as we speak? Yeah, it’s the same movie that was first confirmed back in 2019 but was scrapped due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It was once again revived in 2022, but that idea is now also scrapped, as we have confirmation that a new project is being worked on, although it is basically the same project so many changes have been made to the original plan that we don’t even know where to begin. In July of 2023, Netflix announced that not only had they axed their plans to adapt Mattel's "Masters of the Universe" property into a live-action film, but they were doing so after spending over $30 million in development. Fans had been looking forward to a human He-Man flick since it was first announced in 2007, but the development with Sony Pictures in 2022 seemed like a sure bet. Then it was scrapped, but the project's move to Netflix made sense considering the streamer is home to "He-Man & Masters of the Universe," "Masters of the Universe: Revelation," and "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power." Unfortunately, Netflix dropped the project, which had already cast actor/dancer Kyle Allen to play He-Man/Prince Adam, and Mattel was left looking for a new home for the film.
