He started in journalism in the Discodromo program of CX 8 Radio Sarandí, conducted by Rubén Castillo. Professor of History at the Institute of Artigas Professors and Doctor in Social Communication from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. He held various academic positions at the Catholic University of Uruguay.
He was the creator of the television program Inéditos, broadcast by Saeta TV Canal 10 between 1989 and 1992, an experience of teamwork of teachers and students of the Catholic University that through amateur film documents approached the history of Uruguayans.
He wrote two books about the history of Club Atlético Peñarol. Peñarol and always Peñarol - The transition of 1913 and the question of the dean (2001, reissued in 2017) and History of Peñarol (2004), with Leonardo Haberkorn.
Together with Leonardo Haberkorn he wrote Hidden Story. The desmemorias of Víctor Hugo Morales, published in 2012.
Also in 2012 he published Intriguing, traitors and brave. Prologue by the historian José Rilla, it deals with historical secondary characters or forgotten in the history of the struggles for independence in the Rio de la Plata region, in the 19th century.
He was a columnist for the newspaper El País, where he wrote weekly on facts and historical figures.
He was the father of the director, screenwriter and film producer Fede Álvarez.
