Heading into the Chicago Med premiere, we knew it would bring the end of an era with news having broke ahead of the season’s return that Dominic Rains would be leaving the show after five seasons as a series regular.

As promised by showrunner Allen MacDonald, Dr. Marcel’s exit was handled off-screen early in the premiere as we learned that he left Chicago to move to Boston. Disappointing as it might have been to see Dr. Marcel written out of the show in the manner he was, we knew his exit was coming so it wasn’t exactly surprising. Longtime medical drama Chicago Med is gearing up for a season of change as it enters its tenth year on NBC. The fan-favorite series will see two fresh faces join the veteran cast, along with a new showrunner taking the reins.

As longtime co-showrunners Diane Frolov and Andy Schneider stepped down after nine seasons, Allen MacDonald has been tapped to oversee the Chicago Med crew. MacDonald takes over the showrunner duties and will help steer the introduction of two new series regulars.

Actor Darren Barnet, known for his starring role in Netflix’s Never Have I Ever, joins the cast as emergency room attending physician Dr. John Frost. Barnet brings his talent and charisma to the city of Chicago, with fans excited to see what stories unfold for his character.

The medical drama has added not one, but two new cast members in August!

Two new actors will be scrubbing in for Chicago Med’s 10th season.

Sarah Ramos and Darren Barnet have joined the NBC drama as series regulars. Both will play doctors — Ramos’ character is named Dr. Caitlin Lenox, and Barnet will play Dor. John Frost. Other details are being kept under wraps for now.

They will join a cast that also features S. Epatha Merkerson, Oliver Platt, Marlyne Barrett, Jessy Schram, Steven Weber and Luke Mitchell. Dominic Rains, who played Dr. Crockett Marcel, departed Chicago Med after season nine.

The series also has a new showrunner for season 10 in Allen MacDonald (Harlan Coben’s Shelter, CSI). He steps in after the departure of Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider, who had steered the show since its debut in 2015.

Chicago P.D. has finally announced an addition for the new season.

Actress Tracy Spiridakos left the show during the Season 11 finale, ending her run as Detective Hailey Upton.

Upton was an important part of the Intelligence team, but the character was running out of road.

The previous season saw the exit of Detective Jay Halstead (played by Jesse Lee Soffer).

Losing her partner and husband put Upon in a tailspin from which she never recovered. She left Chicago to find herself again as Season 11 ended in Spring 2024.

While the Chicago P.D. cast has become familiar with adding new pieces, Upton’s shoes will be difficult to fill for anyone.

It was the end of an era at Chicago Fire when Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) was promoted to Deputy Commissioner of the Chicago Fire Department at the end of season 12. The character has appeared on the show since its first season in 2012.

With Boden gone, who will take his place? For now, the battalion chief role will be filled by Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney).

Rains joined Chicago Med in season 5 as Dr. Crockett Marcel. He will not return as a series regular in season 10, Deadline reported. It’s not known if Rains might make a guest appearance next season. Rains’ exit follows the departure of Nick Gehlfuss as Dr. Will Halstead and Brian Tee as Dr. Ethan Choi in season 8.

The Chicago Med Season 9 finale set the stage for Crockett’s departure from Gaffney Chicago Medical Center when he spiraled into crisis following the death of one of his young patients and the subsequent suicide of the boy’s father.

Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago P.D. have seen major cast exits lately.

When the shows return in the fall of 2024, each drama will have new people helping lead the way.
