Written and directed by Mitchell Altieri and Phil Flores Aka The Butcher Brothers, The Violent Kind is a film that I have mixed feelings about.
The movie opens with three members of a Northern California biker gang, Cody (Cory Knauf), Q (Bret Roberts) and Elroy (Nick Tagas) beating the crap out of someone over a bad drug deal or something. Okay so it’s established that they are a pretty violent crew. Three are headed to an isolated mountain cabin to celebrate Cody’s mom’s birthday with the rest of the gang. The party isn’t going so well for Cody—he’s been informed that he has to take on a crap job (he was born into the gang, his dad being an original member) and then his ex-girlfriend Michelle (Tiffany Shepis) shows up with another guy.
Cody’s mood lifts a bit...

After causing some ruckus on the film circuit scene, The Violent Kind is coming to DVD/Blu-Ray from Image Entertainment on May 10, 2011. Pig Hunt wrapped up some film festival coverage in 2009 by attending the Chicago Horror Film Festival and the film has been released already in the United Kingdom, but what of North America? The film, unfortunately, does not have North American distribution yet, despite being completed in 2008 in Boonville California. That is right, an American made horror film has been released in the United Kingdom before North America. How is that for globalization?
In the trailer there is much action, much bumbling, and some good laughs, as a group of rednecks terrorize some city-slickers. Check out the 3000 lb boar below.
The synopsis for Pig Hunt here:
"When John takes his friends to a remote ranch for a wild pig hunt, it seems like a typical guys weekend with guns, despite the presence of John's sexy girlfriend. But as John and his crew trek deeper into the forest, they learn of a legendary,...

Another entry in Sundance's very strong Park City at Midnight program, The Butcher Brothers' The Violent Kind is sexy, bloody, and way out there. In other words, it's a lot of fun. The Butchers are able to change courses multiple times, constantly upping the ante to the point where all of humanity might just be at stake.
We meet Cody (Cory Knauf), his cousin Q (Bret Roberts) and their buddy Elroy (Nick Tagas) when the guys get in a driveway brawl over some bunk drugs Q sold. The guys are second generation of a Nor Cal bike gang and everyone is heading up to an old farm house to celebrate Cody's mom's birthday. It is not Cody's night. Q and the guys are mad about a deal he messed up and his ex-girlfriend Michelle (Tiffany Shepis) shows up with a new guy. Things take a bit of a turn...

The Butcher Brothers have a bit of a spotty track record with genre fans. From pleasing the majority of us with The Hamiltons to savaging some good memories of ours with their insipid April Fool's Day remake, you just have to take their films with a grain of salt.
Now that their latest film The Violent Kind starring Cory Knauf, Christina Prousalis, Taylor Cole, Tiffany Shepis, Bret Roberts, Nick Tagas, Joe Egender, Joseph McKelheer, and Samuel Child has made it to Sundance, some buzz is being drummed up around the Web.
Over at the official The Violent Kind Facebook page some artwork has popped up for the film, which you can dig on below.

Shot earlier this year in northern California, the cast includes Cory Knauf, Christina Prousalis, Taylor Cole, Tiffany Shepis, Bret Roberts, Nick Tagas, Joe Egender, Joseph McKelheer and Samuel Child. Production on ‘The Violent Kind,’ the new film from writer/directing team The Butcher Brothers and starring Corey Knauf and Joseph McKelheer, began earlier this week in Northern California. Filming has been nonstop, and the crew has already released these pics from the set.Check ‘em out:
‘The Violent Kind’ centers around a group of bikers, but, beyond that, story details are being held pretty close to the chest. This is just a shot in the dark, but I’m going to say, at some point, things get pretty violent. The blood in the pics above and the big-ass shotgun might have something to do with that assumption.
The setting in the biker world would, however, explain the muscle weight Knauf had to gain before shooting began. He played such a sweetheart of a guy in ‘Godspeed,’ currently running its course around the festival circuit, so I can’t imagine him playing such a hard-ass,...

Fango hosted the West Coast premiere of director Jim Isaac’s Pig Hunt last night at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, CA, and brought back a handful of photos (see them below), as well as an inherently warm feeling, given the festivities and the raucous audience response the flick received. Kicking off with an actual pig roast and hour-long set by Pig Hunt actor and celebrated blues musician Charlie Musslewhite, the event saw a packed courtyard and house.
On hand were Pig Hunt scripter Robert Mailer Anderson and director Isaac (pictured in first photo, who introduced the screening with Fango), plus cast members Travis Aaron Wade, Tina Huang, Howard Johnson Jr., Trevor Bullock, Rajiv Shah, Jason Foster, Nick Tagas and actor/Primus musician Les Claypool. In five years of hosting horror openings at the Egyptian, this scribe (pictured in third photo with Hayley Dees) has never seen a more positive...
