While Christmas tends to be the default setting for winter horror, 2008’s The Children makes a good argument for terror around the New Year. Many folks would expect leisure and fun after a busy Christmas. However, the chance for relaxation is out of the question in Tom Shankland’s movie. Something terrible has suddenly happened to the kids, and something even worse awaits their parents.
Spending New Year’s Eve with the ‘rents and their relatives is undesirable for most teenagers, but Casey (Hannah Tointon) will have definitely wished for more boring family time after her younger siblings and cousins turn on her and every other grownup nearby. No one past the age of puberty is safe here. As Casey and her closest kin gather at a remote house in the country — a decision that always proves to be as unwise as it is clichéd — The Children steadily reveals its unusual threat.

(Welcome to Scariest Scene Ever, a column dedicated to the most pulse-pounding moments in horror with your tour guides, horror experts Chris Evangelista and Matt Donato. In this edition, Matt makes a case against pregnancy in "The Children.")
Tom Shankland's kinderhorror meanie "The Children" isn't an actual reason to avoid childbirth. That's a joke. Although, I wouldn't recommend the film to newfound parents exploring the wonders of parenting. What occurs is along the lines of "Who Can Kill a Child?" and its remake "Come Out and Play," or "Children of the Corn," where innocence is a coverup for murderous intent. Doubly dreary around the holidays since a majority of Xmas traditions point towards making youngins happy.
"The Children" ranks high atop the list of anti-holiday horror movies. Instead of spending Christmas and New Year's partying or unwrapping presents, kiddies turn into killers who prey upon adults. Children couldn't be capable of such atrocious crimes,...

"Embracing the stink is what festivals are all about." Entertainment Film UK has debuted the full-length official UK trailer for a British comedy titled The Festival, made by the creators of the hit TV show "The Inbetweeners" (and the movies as well). The Festival is a comedy "about friendship, growing up, and going mad in a field." After Nick's girlfriend dumps him, his best mate Shane has the perfect antidote to his break-up blues: three days at an epic music festival. Of course, all kinds of weird, ridiculous things happen. Joe Thomas stars as Nick, and the cast includes Nick Frost, Hammed Animashaun, Claudia O'Doherty, Jemaine Clement, Hannah Tointon, Lizzy Connolly, and Noel Fielding. This looks even worse the more they show from it, so utterly stupid in every way. I'm just tired of these kind of super dumb comedies. Here's the official full-length UK trailer for Iain Morris' The Festival,...

A new trailer has arrived for this summer’s The Inbetweeners-esque comedy The Festival. Starring Joe Thomas as pretty much the same character he plays in the series, he pines over his ex as his friends force him to party at a music festival.
The Inbetweener’s Joe Thomas stars as Nick, recently dumped hence his mates think it’s a good idea to subject him to a few days of mud, being urinated on and getting so hammered he decides to get his nipple pierced.
The Festival is the first comedy feature film release from production company Fudge Park, formed by The Inbetweeners writers and executive producers Iain Morris and Damon Beesley.
Directed by Iain Morris and written by Keith Akushie and Joe Parham (BBC Three’s Siblings); the film also stars Hammed Animashaun (Channel 4’s Flowers, Netflix’s Black Mirror), Claudia O’Doherty (Netflix’s Love,...

Kara Tointon was ''empowered'' by her sister. The 'EastEnders' star has admitted that fellow actress, Hannah Tointon, inspired her to take rejection from acting roles better. She said: ''It was with acting that I found my comfort zone. At first, it was heartbreaking if I went to an audition and I didn't get a part, but I got used to rejection and I just hoped that if I was right for a role I would get it - I was only 22 when I got the part in 'EastEnders'. ''But the difference between me and Hannah is she's far more direct; she knows...

Mr Selfridge returns to ITV tomorrow night, but the winds of change are blowing through London.
Picking up with Harry (Jeremy Piven) in 1919, the ten new episodes see the charismatic American entrepreneur mourning the loss of his wife Rose.
Joining the show as Harry's daughter Rosalie is EastEnders actress Kara Tointon, while Waterloo Road's Leon Ockenden is also on board as her playboy fiancé Serge.
Meet... Rosalie Selfridge (Kara Tointon)
Kara is of course no stranger to joining an established hit series, and insists any nerves she felt upon joining the Mr Selfridge cast were quickly calmed. "Entering a show that's established can be quite daunting, but the people there have been so welcoming," she says.
"Especially Jeremy Piven - he wants you to do your best... to feel comfortable and to give it your best shot."

ITV has debuted a first-look trailer for the new series of Mr Selfridge.
The period drama, starring Jeremy Piven as real-life entrepreneur Harry Selfridge, will return to screens next month.
The new promo - which features the track 'Worthy' by Jacob Banks - provides a glimpse at what to expect from the upcoming third series.
Picking up in 1919, Piven's Selfridge is seen mourning the loss of his wife Rose and distracted from running his grand department store.
Kara and Hannah Tointon will join Mr Selfridge for its new run, with the two sisters playing Harry's daughters Rosalie and Violette, while Zoe Wanamaker has been cast as Russian princess Marie de Bolotoff.
Series creator Andrew Davies previously revealed to Digital Spy that he plans for Mr Selfridge to end after four series.
"It was always conceived of as four series - that is, if people liked it enough," he explained earlier this year.

Throughout the month of December, we will be highlighting a film a day that has some tie into the holiday somehow. Some titles will be obvious, others won’t be. Some films will be good and, again, others won’t be. However, we think all titles are worth your time whether to give you chills inside your home or to make you drink more eggnog until you puke laughing.
This Christmas Casey (Hannah Tointon) and her two siblings are being dragged to their Aunt’s house. Which is a bummer because they live in the country, where there’s nothing to do and barely any cell reception. She’s also put out over how much the younger children are doted over. Especially when little Paulie gets sick. Asides from being extra whiny, Paulie starts acting odd. And pretty soon his sister and two cousins get sick too. The more symptoms...

Kara Tointon has confirmed her split from former Strictly Come Dancing partner Artem Chigvintsev.
The EastEnders actress and professional dancer were paired on series eight of the BBC celebrity dancing competition in 2010, winning the series and becoming a romantic couple soon after.
"We are not together," Tointon told The Daily Telegraph at the Macmillan De'Longhi Arts Programme silent auction at the Darren Baker gallery in Fitzrovia on Monday (October 27).
"We're fine, but we aren't a couple any more. The reason I haven't spoken about it is because I hate reading about myself in that way."
Tointin previously said that she had decided against having a TV romance before entering the competition added that "you can't help it if you meet someone amazing".
After their show win she said that she dreamed of getting married "one day", but later confirmed she would not "rush" into having a wedding.

Mr Selfridge will likely end after four series, its creator Andrew Davies has revealed.
Davies told Digital Spy that the ITV drama "was always conceived" with four series in mind.
"It was always conceived of as four series - that is, if people liked it enough," he explained. "People seem to love it, so I think we can do the four series."
Davies hinted the show's upcoming third run will see Jeremy Piven's Harry Selfridge grow "darker and wilder", following the death of his wife.
"He was just such a good boy all through the second series - I'd like him to cut loose in the third," the writer said.
"[In real life] he became increasingly wild and reckless and finished up penniless - so it's got a tragic arc at the end. I guess we're going to stick to that.

There have been numerous interweaving and not so interweaving plots during this inaugural season of "Penny Dreadful," but there have been two constants. The first has been the search by Sir Malcom (Timothy Dalton) and Ms. Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) to save Mina (Olivia Llewellyn) from the clutches of a vampire demon. The second has been the systematic haunting of Doctor Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway, Jr.) by his first creation (Rory Kinnear), a vindictive son who brutally demands a bride from his creator. If the series finale told us anything it's that creator John Logan had no intention of dragging these story lines out any more than necessary. More so, Logan appears to have a lot more in store for "Dreadful's" unexpected group of flawed "heroes." Two of the series' best performances have been from Green and Dalton. Their characters have behaved like two adversaries forced to grit their teeth...

Last week’s “Closer Than Sisters” was a pleasant diversion for Penny Dreadful but a diversion all the same, and you can feel show creator John Logan trying to make up for lost time in “What Death Can Join Together,” an episode that hits the ground running and rarely slows down. At times, that acceleration of, well, everything in Penny Dreadful means that certain character moments seem a little rushed (and that’s a shame), but overall the episode is another extremely enjoyable outing for the series. There are some very creepy moments, major developments in the overarching plot, the show’s best action sequence to date and an Eva Green sex scene all wrapped up in one stylish bow – and if that balance is what Penny Dreadful will be aiming to strike from now on, I’m completely on board with that.

Walking with the Enemy is a must see for anyone that desires to learn more about World War II and the atrocities involved in the horrific occurrences the Jewish people had to endure. The film is based on true events and the end credits ultimately share what happens to the main characters. Walking with the Enemy is both touching and heartfelt, not unlike Schindler’s List; you will not be disappointed.
Our Jewish hero Elek Cohen (Jonas Armstrong) is found falling in love with the beautiful Hannah Schoen (Hannah Tointon). Soon after this, Elek is forced to leave his family as are all of the young men in his town and go to a work camp. As you can imagine, the camp turns out to be barbaric. As the camps are raided by Americans, Elek and his friend are able to escape. They head back to their home village only...

Chicago – In movie land, the World War II Holocaust drama has been more personal – and in many ways more horrific – in our modern era. The latest film to tell a different story, from a different angle, is director Mark Schmidt’s “Walking with the Enemy.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The film is set near the end of the war, in Budapest, Hungary, which was a late territory takeover from the Nazi regime. As in the other takeovers, the Jewish population is marginalized and rounded up for extermination. The twist in this tale is that an underground movement fought back by actually impersonating the Nazi officers to redirect groups of Jewish captives, and set up a system to create passports to Switzerland and safety. The film is a fictionalized drama of these circumstances, but it faithfully resurrects the tension and terror having to do with the risk, and the excellent performances by Jonas Armstrong...

Many movies portray the acts of bravery from World War II, and “Walking with the Enemy” tells us another story of Nazi resistance.
“Walking with the Enemy” is a fictional story based on the real life accounts of Pinchas Tibor Rosenbaum, a Jew who impersonated a Nazi officer in Hungary and saved the lives of many Jews from Nazi persecution during World War II.
Director Mark Schmidt made his directorial debut with Jonas Armstrong, Hannah Tointon and Ben Kingsley in the starring roles.
Earlier this month, Latino-Review had an exclusive telephone with Jonas Armstrong on his role playing this Jewish hero. We discussed about the research of his role, developing the accents and working on the set. And Armstrong even gave us a tease about his character in the upcoming “Edge of Tomorrow” with Tom Cruise.
“Walking with the Enemy” is currently in theaters in limited release.

Over the past little while on the big screen, we've seen dramas highlight the sacrifices and acts of courage made by those in World War II to preserve lives and memories. "The Book Thief" was the fictional tale of a Jewish man hiding with a family in Nazi Germany, while "Monuments Men" told the true story of art historians racing against time to prevent precious artifacts from being destroyed by an unraveling Germany army. And now comes "Walking With the Enemy," another film inspired by a true story, set in the faded days of World War II. Mark Schmidt makes his directorial debut, both writing and helming the film starring Jonas Armstrong, Hannah Tointon and Ben Kingsley. The Hungary-set story follows a young man who disguises himself as a Nazi officer in order to find his family. And as you'll see in this exclusive clip, the horror of the war...

By this point in time, it seems that every conceivable World War II story had been told – from South of the Border, made in 1939 about an American agent working to prevent Nazis from seizing control of Mexican oil fields, to this year’s Monuments Men, George Clooney’s ode to the men trying to preserve Europe’s cultural heritage. But still, nearly 70 years after it ended, the second world war continues to deliver material for Hollywood to sink its claws into.
Based on the somewhat amazing true story about ordinary Hungarians and their struggle to save the lives of thousands of Jews marked for death, Walking with the Enemy skates on old Hollywood charm of good guys versus bad guys, with both being easy to identify on sight.

Chicago – World War II will never be over, in a sense, as long as it continues to influence the culture or teach us lessons about our contemporary lives. The new film “Walking with the Enemy” is rooted in the Holocaust, but uses the twist of a Hungarian Jew who brashly impersonated a Nazi officer to relocate his counterparts.
“Walking with the Enemy” is inspired by the true story of Tibor Rosenbaum, who led a group of resistance fighters, and saved many Jewish lives through his Nazi officer impersonations, also directing his people to the “Glass House,” an old factory that printed Swiss passports for those Hungarian Jews during the war. The story in the film is condensed and fictionalized through the character of Elek Cohen, portrayed by Jonas Armstrong (known in Britain for his role as Robin Hood, portrayed on a TV series from 2006-09). Walk to Remember: Schmidt’s Debut Sincere and Gawky
Director Mark Schmidt attempts to recount an obscure chronicle of WWII heroism to generally awkward effect, though, despite a multitude of distracting and poorly manufactured instances of laughable manipulation, manages to ratchet up sufficient tension to hold our attention. Using a wild variety of Canadian, American, and UK actors, Schmidt’s got a hodgepodge of English speakers trying their best mildly accented Hungarian, often to dubious effect, while a series of poorly edited sequences belies its rather strained budget. A daunting amount of better made films recounting the period flounces the necessity of Schmidt’s picture, even as Walking with the Enemy does depict an account well worth honoring, but it’s a film that will only be cannibalized by the memory of stronger features, bringing to mind, among other title, the similar feel of the 2012 Macedonian film, The Third Half.

"I will not be intimidated." Liberty has debuted two new trailers for the indie WWII drama Walking with the Enemy, directed by Mark Schmidt, starring an international cast including Sir Ben Kingsley looking like a fine chap, all right, plus Jonas Armstrong (Book of Blood, Edge of Tomorrow), Hannah Tointon (The Children, The Body, The Lost Future), Burn Gorman (Pacific Rim, The Dark Knight Rises), Mark Wells and William Hope (Captain America, Dark Shadows). The film is set mostly in Hungary, and looks surprisingly powerful and epic, despite the indie feeling to it. Two new trailers join the original trailer a few months ago. This looks like it might be worth seeing, but it doesn't have many good reviews yet. Take a look. Here's the latest trailer (#3) for Mark Schmidt's Walking with the Enemy, in high def from Apple: Here's the other new trailer (#2) for Mark Schmidt's Walking with the Enemy,...

Midsomer Murders The Christmas Haunting
Midsomer Murders returned to ITV tonight with a new story that was set in Britain’s “most haunted” town. In the opening minutes of The Christmas Haunting, the first unfortunate victim of the night had a brief and fatal encounter with an antique sword. Some of the locals were horrified while others tried to cash-in by linking the killing with the ghouls that are at the heart of the local tourist trade. Ever the realist, Barnaby quickly dismissed the supernatural links and began identifying suspects who stood to gain from the victim’s death. As something of a lady’s man with a penchant for married women, the slain man had no shortage of enemies. Things got ever more complicated as the local pub landlord was revealed to be a rival Casanova but before long he too was bludgeoned to death. As the investigation progressed...

Nothing says Christmas horror like spreading Yule tide cheer with some murderous children! I have to admit, there have been a good number of “killer kids” done in horror so I didn’t expect much with this movie seeing as I hadn’t even heard of it until recently. Thankfully, I was proven wrong and loved this movie quite a bit. This British horror film was only given a straight to video release in America despite being given a theatrical release in the UK.
The plot is a small group of family and friends travel to a country home in an isolated snowy region for their Christmas get together.

Tonight in London, the very worst in sauciness, smut, and sexploitation will be celebrated at 2013's Literary Review Bad Sex in Fiction Awards.
Folk singer Woody Guthrie's debut novel House of Earth will face off against the likes of Susan Choi's My Education and Rupert Thomson's Secrecy for the dubious honour of being named the filthiest and most foul.
Each year, the awards seek to celebrate the "most egregious passage of sexual description" in a novel, so here at Digital Spy, we figured we'd get in on the act - and that's not an innuendo.
Here's a few of television's very worst sex scenes, to prove that when it comes to coitus, telly can do the awkward, the awe-inspring and the just-plain-awful as well as any piece of literature...

The new arrival was written into the ITV detective series when Dolman discovered she was pregnant. Her baby, Madeleine Charlotte, was born in July.
"I didn't think I'd ever have a child so I feel very blessed," said the single mum. "I am very happy to bring up the baby on my own as I have incredible support and love from my family.
