Exclusive: Indie distributor Variance Films has snapped up North American rights to the period drama Amerikatsi, written and directed by and starring Michael A. Goorjian, slating it for an exclusive theatrical release in New York and L.A. on Friday, September 8, with a national rollout to follow.
Shot in Armenia by People of Ar Productions, Amerikatsi centers on Charlie (Goorjian), who returns to the country in 1948 — decades after fleeing to the U.S. as a child, due to persecution by the Ottoman Empire. What he finds in doing so is a country crushed under Soviet rule. And after being unjustly imprisoned, Charlie falls into despair, until he discovers that he can see into a nearby apartment from his cell window — the home of a prison guard. As his life unexpectedly becomes entwined with the man’s, he begins to see that the true spirit of his homeland is alive in its passionate people.

Poland’s Tako Media is to produce a local version of Russian comedy series “The Ivanovs vs. the Ivanovs” following a format deal with All Media.
The series turns on the premise that two babies were accidentally swapped at birth and then brought up by two very different families – one rich, the other poor. When the parents and their children meet 16 years later, it is decided that the boys should return to their biological parents. Everything that can go wrong, goes wrong, resulting in chaos.
Tako is now in pre-production on the show, adapting the original scripts. A private broadcaster, as yet unnamed, has greenlit the show.
Tako co-owner Okil Khamidov will direct the Polish series, which is being produced by Jacek Ściobłowski. The premiere is set for the fall season of 2020.
Khamidov said: “’The Ivanovs vs. the Ivanovs’ has universal appeal, and is understandable for a wide audience everywhere in the world.
