- A film director, writer, and actor, Ningyi Sun is a grantee of Sundance, Hot Docs Blue Ice, Ford Foundation, IDFA Bertha Fund, and Chicken & Egg Pictures. With fluency in four languages and experience living among different communities and cultures on three continents, Ningyi is fascinated by stories about displacement, mobility, and feminism. Her first foray into filmmaking was the documentary feature 'Eat Bitter,' which follows a Chinese construction manager and a local sand laborer in their pursuit of happiness amidst civil war in the Central African Republic. 'Eat Bitter' premiered at CPH:DOX in 2023 and has been selected for over 40 world film festivals, including Oscar-qualified ones. It won the Best Cinematography award at the Social Impact Media Awards, the Best Documentary Feature at the Visioni dal Mondo International Documentary Festival and received a "Special Mention" at the Encounters South African International Documentary Festival.
