Mo Amer will return with new episodes of his eponymous Netflix dramedy series on January 30, with all 8 making up the show’s second and final season. First-look photos can be found below.
Created by Mohammed ‘Mo’ Amer and Ramy Youssef, Mo follows the character of Mo Najjar, a Palestinian on the path to U.S. citizenship who straddles the line between two cultures, three languages, and a ton of bullshit.
Season 2 finds him stranded across the border and desperate to return to Houston before his family’s asylum hearing. But as a refugee without a state or a passport, he will need all the hustle and charm he can muster. His return home would be only the start of his troubles, as a new guy in town is looking to steal his longtime love Maria (Teresa Ruiz) and his falafel taco recipe.

Jeff Nichols has revealed he is writing his first original work since 2016 sci-fi Midnight Special that will take him back to his native territory of Arkansas, backdrop to early features Shotgun Stories and Mud.
The project is in addition to his adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novels ‘The Passenger’ and its companion ‘Stella Maris’ about siblings living with the knowledge that their father helped develop the atom bomb.
“I am adapting the last two Cormac McCarthy novels but then I am also writing my first original script since Midnight Special, my fourth film,” said Nichols.
Fifth film Loving, about interracial couple Mildred and Richard Loving’s 1960s battle to have their marriage recognized in Virginia, was inspired by Nancy Buirski’s 2011 documentary The Loving Story, while Chicago-based crime drama The Bikeriders was based on Danny Lyon’s book of the same name.

The Match Factory will handle international sales for director Cherien Dabis’ decades spanning family saga “All That’s Left of You.”
Currently in post-production and by all accounts among the most anticipated projects presented at this year’s Atlas Workshops, the film follows three generations of a Palestinian family, tracking cycles of trauma beginning with the 1948 displacement from Jaffa and continuing through occupation, violence and present day heartbreak in the West Bank.
An acclaimed filmmaker and actor, Dabis stars as well, anchoring the film as a devastated mother to a teenaged son injured by an Israeli soldier. As her son’s life hangs in the balance, the grief-struck woman tries to make sense of her family and people’s heritage. Actors – and brothers – Saleh Bakri (“The Blue Caftan”) and Adam Bakri (“Omar”) co-star alongside father Mohammad Bakri, making the project a truly intergenerational portrait.

As conflicts escalate in the Middle East and North Africa, from Palestine to Yemen and Sudan, filmmakers have seen an increase in solidarity within the local creative community to find ways to continue to get films made in the region. Still, producers and directors struggle to navigate an increasingly tense and politicized international scene and express concerns about the future of an industry that has experienced unforeseen growth within the last five years.
“We are in the middle of a very scary situation right now and we don’t know when it will end,” said film producer Alaa Karkouti, CEO and co-founder of Mad Solutions, the Arab world’s most prolific distributor of Arabic film content. “There is the issue of local productions but any non-Arab productions will also look at the political situation before coming to the region. This is the most pressing issue in the world right now.

The showrunner of AMC’s recently scrapped Invitation to a Bonfire is hopeful that her psychological thriller will land elsewhere.
Rachel Caris Love says she’s already in conversations about finding “a partner who’s capable of giving us the support that we need.” Her team already completed four of the first six episodes when she received word before Christmas that AMC was killing the Boston-based project that stars Tatiana Maslany, Ngozi Anyanwu and Pilou Asbæ.
The series was given a six-episode order and was scheduled to launch this year on AMC and AMC+. But then Bonfire, along with the second season of 61st Street, were just dropped by AMC Networks after the company revealed it would take around 400M of content write downs.

The Emmys often award the same shows over and over again, and, well, they did that again tonight by giving Best Comedy Series to last year’s winner “Ted Lasso” and Best Drama Series to the winner two years ago, “Succession.” But it wasn’t a sweep of the Comedy and Drama categories at the 74th Prime Emmy Awards by those two shows by any means.
In fact, the Emmys spread the wealth quite a bit: in the Comedy categories, “Ted Lasso” indeed won four Emmys: for Lead Actor Jason Sudeikis, Supporting Actor Brett Goldstein, and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, as well as the top prize. But “Abbott Elementary” also won two major prizes: Sheryl Lee Ralph for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, and for Best Writing for a Comedy Series.

The 74th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards took place on Monday night, September 12, during a live ceremony hosted by Kenan Thompson that broadcast on NBC. So who were the big winners? “Succession” entered these awards with a leading 25 nominations, the most of any program in any genre. “Ted Lasso” was the top comedy with 20, tied with the leading limited series contender “The White Lotus.” But the lion’s share of categories were already decided at the Creative Arts Awards that took place over two ceremonies on September 3 and 4.
“Ted Lasso” was actually the biggest loser at those kudos going 0-10. It can still rebound at tonight’s main ceremony and repeat as Best Comedy Series, but that was a major hit, especially the Best Casting loss to “Abbott Elementary.

If the list of hot-ticket Emmy parties seems a bit shorter than before we all got knocked for a loop by the pandemic, that’s because it is. But as Hollywood continues to go live and big as awards season gets geared up to roll for six months from the Emmys on Sept. 12 all the way to the Oscars on March 12, there are definitely some seriously good parties happening from now through Monday.
Make sure you are on the guest list, for these are all invite-only, guest-list affairs. Don’t expect to get through the doors without a vaccination card or a negative test, as that part of partygoing is still firmly in place.

When the first season of Only Murders in the Building debuted on Hulu in August of 2021, it immediately became a smash hit show, capturing the hearts of millions of viewers from all around the world. Heck, you didn’t even have to be a fan of murder mystery-style shows to fall in love with it. Of course, if you are a fan of those shows, it will most likely make the experience that much better.

With two episodes left of the second season of Hulu’s mystery romp “Only Murders in the Building,” the series is an undeniable hit on the streaming platform. Nominated for 17 Emmy Awards for its first season, this season’s final two episodes (titled “Sparring Partners” and “I Know Who Did It”) will be released while voting is underway by the TV Academy, a tactic that helped one of its competitors, “Ted Lasso” from Apple TV+, last year when it won for its inaugural season.
Variety Awards Circuit has revealed the updated predictions for which shows and performers could triumph in September. For Only Murders in the Building, composer Siddhartha Khosla focused on underscoring the dramatic beats of the murder mystery rather than the comedy. The series follows a trio of true crime fans in NYC who start a podcast when they find themselves embroiled in their own mystery. In an effort to give it a more “NYC” feeling, he incorporated bucket drumming into the orchestra. Using those same instruments for the bulk of the score, Khosla’s work became essential in “The Boy From 6B”, which follows the perspective of the deaf character Theo Dimas (James Caverly). Only Murders in the Building is nominated for 17 Emmys in its first season, including Outstanding Comedy Series and two nominations for Khosla for his score and the main title theme.

A version of this story about female directors first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
This year was far from a landmark for female directors at the Emmys, with only 13 women nominated against 32 men across the seven directing categories. Sure, that’s better than last year, when 47 men and only 11 women were nominated, and it’s much better than 2018, when the lamentable total was 44 men and only four (!) women.
But this year’s total is a step down from 2020, when the record 16 female directors that were nominated made up a full 33 of the total; this year, that has slipped down to just below 29.
Still, there’s one bright spot to make up for women being shut out of the Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special category or only managing one nomination each in the limited series, documentary/nonfiction and reality categories. The...

Siddhartha Khosla has a hat trick of Emmy nominations this year, two of which are for “Only Murders in the Building,” for composing the addictive theme and the show’s score. For the latter category, he submitted “The Boy from 6B,” the standout Season 1 episode told from the perspective of Theo (James Caverly), who’s deaf, with no dialogue until one sentence at the end. And at one point in the process, there was going to be no music in the episode either.
“Julie Monroe, our editor was key in this. Cherien Dabis, who directed the episode — key. We all work together very early on in terms of finding what it was,” Khosla tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Composers panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). “At one point, there was gonna be no music. The nominations for Best Comedy Directing at the Emmys have an equal combination of new shows, last year’s contenders and series making their returns after years between seasons. This category is particularly head-scratching because there are select standout nominees whose episodes are creatively artistic in their execution such as “Barry” or “Only Murders In The Building” against series frontrunners like “Ted Lasso” and “Hacks,” the latter of which won the category last year. So it begs the question of whether the passion of voters will side with a directorial achievement or with what’ll win the top award.
Here are Gold Derby’s current Best Comedy Directing Emmy 2022 racetrack odds:
“Barry” (“710N” by Bill Hader) — 5/1 odds
“Hacks” (“There Will Be Blood” by Lucia Aniello) — 6/1 odds
“Only Murders In The Building” (“The Boy From 6B” by Cherien Dabis) — 6/1 odds

A number of stars doing double- and triple-duty on series have been rewarded for their off-camera work with writing or directing Emmy nominations this year, notably “Ozark’s” Jason Bateman, “Abbott Elementary’s” Quinta Brunson, “Barry’s” Bill Hader and “Only Murders in the Building’s” Steve Martin.

Hulu made the history books today with a record 58 Emmy nominations, including 17 for the comedy Only Murders in the Building and 14 for the limited series Dopesick.
The streamer’s last record was hit in 2018 with 27 nominations. Hulu earned 26 nominations last year.
2022 Emmy Nominations: Deadline’s Complete Coverage
“We’ve always had a strategy of curation and diversification. Excellence across the board has always been really important,” said Craig Erwich, President, ABC Entertainment & Hulu Originals. “But I think this year is a culmination of the strategy and the entire organization working incredibly well together. Dana Walden has set a tone in terms of supporting talent and creative excellence and collaboration across both the studio and the network. So when you see shows like Only Murders in the Building and The Dropout and Dopesick, it’s not just a function of the Hulu team, but Karey Burke and her entire team making the same show.

In a category often lacking in diversity, this year’s Emmy nominations for Outstanding Directing saw near gender parity, with almost half of those recognized being women. Some of the notable nods include female-helmed episodes of “Only Murders in the Building,” “Hacks” and “Succession.”
Palestinian American actress-director Cherien Dabis directed the critically lauded episode “The Boy From 6B” for “Only Murders,” which was depicted entirely from the perspective of Theo (James Caverly), a deaf character.
“I’m speechless!” Dabis said in a statement. “Which I guess is appropriate because I’ve been nominated for a silent episode! Seriously though, I’m beyond thrilled. This is particularly special because this episode is so unique, inventive and ambitious. I’m incredibly grateful to the writers and show-runner / co-creator John Hoffman and Hulu for boldly taking a risk on a dialogue-free episode of a half hour comedy and for inviting me on to do such meaningful work.

The 2022 Emmy ballot for Best Comedy Directing lists 178 episodes, so there will be seven nominees. As a refresher, last year’s winner was “Hacks” (“There Is No Line” by Lucia Aniello) and the other nominees were “The Flight Attendant” (“In Case of Emergency” by Susanna Fogel), “B Positive” (“Pilot” by James Burrows) and “Mom” (“Scooby-Doo Checks and Salisbury Steak” by James Widdoes), plus “Ted Lasso” with three episodes.
With the exception of “Mom,” which ended last year, all of these series are back in the running. “Hacks” once again went with a solo submission (as it did with writing), with Aniello defending her title with the episode “There Will Be Blood.” After getting three slots last year, “Ted Lasso” takes its shot with four episode submissions, including nominees Lowney (“Inventing The Pyramid Of Success”) and Delaney (“No Weddings and a Funeral”), along with Erica Dunton (“Rainbow”) and Sam Jones (“Beard...

These directors, who have never won an Emmy, may finally get a chance at a nomination and perhaps a win with these buzzy series.
Karyn Kusama
It’s been 20 years since Kusama made her directorial debut, but she’s yet to receive an Emmy nomination. The “Jennifer’s Body” director stepped behind the camera for the pilot episode of this year’s breakout drama “Yellowjackets” on Showtime.
Lorene Scafaria
Best known for writing and directing 2019’s “Hustlers,” Scafaria helmed the seventh episode of the latest season of HBO’s massive hit, “Succession.” Titled “Too Much Birthday,” the heart-wrenching episode, which centered on Kendall’s lavish 40th birthday party, could — and should — also get recognition for production design done by Stephen H. Carter.
Cherien Dabis
Dabis is at the helm of the seventh episode of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” perfectly titled “The Boy From 6B.” The hour both moves...

The Red Sea International Film Festival in partnership with Vox Cinemas, Mbc Group, and Saudia Airlines announced the winners of the Red Sea competition sections. The 16 feature, 18 shorts selection and 21 ground-breaking global virtual reality experiences are a celebration of the most exciting, innovative new films and cinematic storytelling from established and emerging filmmakers from the Arab world and Africa.
This year’s jury included: President of the Red Sea Features Competition, Academy Award-winning Italian director and writer Giuseppe Tornatore, Tunisian actress Hend Sabry, Palestinian-American director, writer, actress, and producer Cherien Dabis, Mexican festival director and founder of the Morelia International Film Festival Daniela Michel and Saudi film director Abdulaziz Alshlahei.
Competition Jury Prize went to the Cannes Directors Fortnight premiering Hit the Road by Panah Panahi from Iran.
Competition Best Film went to Brighton 4th by Levan Koguashvili a coproduction of Georgia, Russia, Bulgaria, USA, Monaco. This is Georgia’s submission for Oscar Nomination for Best International Film and the winner of the Asian World Film Festival, Los Angeles for Best Picture. This film about the Georgian emigrants living in Brighton Beach, USA today captures the heart of the viewers with its open sharing of the Georgians today. Its director Levan Koguashvili graduated NYU Film school. The film is the winner of three prizes at Cottbus Film Festival and three awards at Tribeca as well.
Competition Best Actor and Best Director for Europa went to Amal Ali and Haider Rashid respectively, a coproduction of Iraq, Italy, and Kuwait:
Haider Rashid says, “Regarding the main role, Kamal, I was set on finding an actor who could understand the sense of displacement that we wanted to portray on an emotional level. My colleague Daniele Bernabei ran into a trailer for a short film while at the Short Film Corner in Cannes and sent it to me, as the cast was composed of several Arab actors. As soon as I saw Adam Ali I felt there was something interesting about him, a silent movie face in a way. That made me want to find out more, since we were going to make a film in which dialogue is at a minimum and most of the film is on the protagonist’s shoulders.
While he was in Canada shooting Apple+’s Little America, we had a very interesting conversation and found some common grounds on certain issues like the misrepresentation of certain ethnicities in film and TV and what it feels like to be sometimes torn between two cultures. Adam is of Libyan origins and moved with his family to Manchester when he was a child, so the issue of identity was also a common ground between us.
Of course this film is pretty different as it is so physical and it was clear that we were going to do many things that not every actor would be willing to do. While speaking to Adam, it seemed to me that there was a certain pride about him that would help me in pushing him in certain directions both physically and emotionally by sometimes provoking him. He was great in being determined to do what was necessary and I have to say he was really brave in how he faced the physical and emotional challenges that the story entailed.”
Competition Best Actress Award went to Arawinda Kirana for her role in Yuni a production of Indonesia, Singapore, France, Australia. She also won for best actress in the Asian World Film Festival, Los Angeles. This is a beautifully shot story of the feisy rebellion of a young woman in Indonesia today, a place we have not seen in its contemporary feminine aspects until now.

As the director herself has stated, Palaistinian producers-filmmakers tend to shoot movies about the Occupation without realizing it. In “Villa Touma”, however, Suha Arraf tries to stray away from the usual approach to the subject, by focusing on a story that is almost Shakesperean, still managing, though, to talk about the Occupation.
“Villa Touma” screened at Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinema
The film begins in 2000, when Badia ages out of the Christian orphanage where she grew up, and is essentially forced upon her aunts, three sisters who have lost their lands and social status following the Six Day War with Israel in 1967, but continue to live as if nothing has changed, essentially in seclusion from the outside world, with the exception of the high class gatherings in thelocal Christian church. Juliette, the eldest one and “boss” of the family, greets Badia in coldness, immediately communicating that the only...
