Exclusive: Paramount Pictures has launched development on What Kids Want, a new feature scripted by the Like a Boss duo of Sam Pitman and Adam Cole-Kelly, sources tell Deadline.
The film follows up the high concept comedies What Women Want (2000), starring Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt, and What Men Want (2019), starring Taraji P. Henson and Tracy Morgan, both of which were distributed by Paramount. While the former centered on a man suddenly gifted (or cursed?) with the ability to hear the thoughts of women, the latter reversed the equation. The new film will, of course, involve a look into the minds of children.
Todd Garner will produce for Broken Road Productions, alongside Gina Mathews and Grant Scharbo for Little Engine Entertainmemt. Matthews comes to the project after producing What Women Want, along with such rom-coms as 13 Going on 30, All My Life (alongside Garner) and Isn’t It Romantic?...

The time really is perfect for a film like Like A Boss, a movie about two female friends testing their sisterhood bond when challenged with a big money job that might make their business hit big in the cosmetics industry. With the awesome strength of women being at the core of so many successful and acclaimed motion pictures of late, this could be another offering that has a lot to say about the modern woman. Plus, with a strong cast, it seems like a winning formula? Right? Why is it then, that this film comes limping into its UK release off the back of some woeful reviews Stateside, and an equally limp box office taking? Is this an unfairly judged diamond, or is it a messy misfire? Sadly, I must report it is more the latter… only much worse.

Despite sporting a pedigree of talented people involved in the project, the new comedy, Like a Boss, fails to deliver much of anything in the way of laughs, let alone any real entertainment value for your dollar. The film is consistently mired in a morass of overused comedic clichés and a lifeless plot that never gains the momentum it needs to carry the film from one flimsy comedy bit to the next.
Like a Boss follows best friends Mia and Mel (Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne respectively) who not only run the cosmetics company they’ve built together, but also cohabitate in a home that Mia inherited from her mother. Simply put, they are best friends. They’ve been together through thick and thin and seem to share a bond between them that transcends most traditional friendships. But, soon after they and their company are introduced, Mia and Mel run...

Its economic message might be fuzzy. Its feminism, too. But best-friend comedy “Like a Boss” rides Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrnes’s frisky and believable chemistry to laughs — some worn, some crude, but more than a few delivered deftly and consistently enough to keep audiences smiling if not doubled over.
The two share the house Mia inherited, the one where Mel came to live as a teen when her own family cratered. They were enterprising girls who grew into inventive businesswomen, all the while remaining best friends. They complete each other. Yes, in the rom-com sense, the film — directed by Miguel Arteta — makes clear. Friendship can be one of the great romances, after all.
Owners of their own cosmetics line and boutique, Mia and Mel’s deep affection is tested when cosmetics titan Claire Luna, played by Salma Hayek, swoops in to invest in their self-named company. They are nearly $500,000 in debt,...

It’s never good when you can figure out exactly what will happen in a movie — from the conflict to the pat resolution — within the first 15 minutes. But director Miguel Arteta’s new friendship comedy “Like a Boss” is just like that.
Aside from the charming chemistry between leads Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne, the film is a mostly forgettable romp that throws together recycled themes of female entrepreneurship, friendship, and rivalry without making any real impact. It’s a shame, too, because Byrne gets to revive some of her great comedic timing from “Bridesmaids” and goes toe-to-toe with Haddish’s larger-than-life personality; it’s no easy feat, but Byrne nails it. You can tell the two are having fun together, but the movie itself is way too basic to become truly enjoyable.

There is something incredibly telling about the fact that two men wrote Like a Boss, a lighthearted comedy about finding your person (be that a friend or significant other) wrapped up in a shallow satire of the cosmetics industry. And while Sam Pitman and Adam Cole-Kelly’s script has a few chuckles, with stars Tiffany Haddish, Rose Byrne, and Salma Hayek committing to their bits like a Sephora expert determined to send their client out into the world with her dream look, none of it sticks. In fact, I kind of hate it.
Mia (Haddish) and Mel (Byrne) are high school besties turned codependent adults, and they love nothing more than to echo Grey’s Anatomy’s most enduring catchphrase while nevertheless demonstrating there’s a...

Universal could not have set it up any better for the wide release of Sam Mendes’ “1917.” After grossing over $2 million from a two-week limited release run, the DreamWorks-produced World War I film is set to go wide on Friday days after winning Best Picture and Best Director at the Golden Globes.
The most recent round of tracking has the awards contender projected to earn around $25 million this weekend, with Universal eyeing $20 million. But the Globes victory has kicked audience awareness and word of mouth into overdrive, and a $30 million-plus start is very possible if interest expands beyond its core demographic of audiences over age 55. Online ticket sellers are already reporting a big spike in advance sales, with Fandango reporting that “1917” was second only to “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” in sales on Monday.

In the trailer for “Like a Boss,” Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne play two best friends rising in the fashion industry who turn to a beauty queen played by Salma Hayek for help, only for things to get ugly fast.
Haddish and Byrne have a successful business, but they’re deep in debt. And though Hayek motivates them to take charge, she’s really just out to steal their ideas and business. Soon they’re throwing punches, dangling from perilous railings and even smashing breasts together as they all try to prove they’re the boss.
“You don’t have to worry your pretty little head,” Haddish says to Hayek. “My head is not little. It’s just that my breasts are humongous,” she replies.

You steal enough scenes as a supporting player, and eventually they begin building movies around you. That’s happening for Adam Devine, who has just made a deal at New Line to star in Paternity Leave, which Todd Strauss-Schulson is set to direct. Adam Cole-Kelly and Sam Pitman wrote the most recent draft. This comes after Devine’s showy roles in the Pitch Perfect films and The Intern. As life-altering as having can child can be, it.s not surprising that films and TV shows are often finding new ways to get funny out of a new-parent scenario. In the case of Pregnancy Pact, the story precedes the babies as three friends make a pact to get their wives pregnant. According to Deadline, the pitch was acquired by New Line and is set to be written by Sam Pitman and Adam Cole-Kelly, who are credited for writing The Diversification of Noah Miller, which made the 2009 Black List. To be produced by Red Hour.s Ben Stiller and Stuart Cornfield (Tropic Thunder, Zoolander), The Pregnancy Pact will follow four guys who conspire to get their wives pregnant in an effort to ensure their friendships with one another stay intact beyond the inevitable shifts of pre-to-post baby life. It.s not hard to guess how a set-up like this might...

The comedy follows three lifelong best friends who make an ill-conceived pact to get the women in their lives pregnant at the same time. Their goal is to avoid having to make friends with other new parents when their child is born. Instead, it tests their friendship and marriages. It’s considered a strong vehicle for three young actors, and already some are circling, though no one is attached yet. The project will be produced by Red Hour’s Ben Stiller and Stuart Cornfeld. Erica Steinberg, who brought it in, will be exec producer. The writers, who first got on the map when their script The Diversification of Noah Miller made the Black List, are also rewriting a Russell Brand comic vehicle at Paramount, and they have just...

It’s going to be pretty awkward when you have to tell your friend you’re checking out a film called Premature Maturation. It’s a good thing Fox will likely change the title. According to THR, the studio picked up the pitch from writers Adam Cole-Kelly and Sam Pittman, which is based on the much beloved Tom Hanks 1988 film Big. It’ll be a comedy about a group of kids who suddenly become adults. Producing duties fall to former NewsCorp president through Chernin Entertainment. John Fox is on duty for the studio, which aims to have the film appeal to kids and adults alike. Minus the plot similarity, I have a hard time imagining [...]...

20th Century Fox has bought a pitch from writers Adam Cole-Kelly & Sam Pittman titled Premature Maturation that puts an ensemble spin on the concept behind the hit 1988 Tom Hanks comedy. Risky Business reports that the project will likely get a new title. It follows a group of kids who suddenly find themselves grown up. Former NewsCorp president Peter Chernin is producing through his Chernin Entertainment. Well, we should have seen this coming. Hollywood comedies are nothing if not riffs on one another, so if Big is a successful movie and The Hangover is a successful movie, why not combine them! That seems to be the idea behind a new pitch picked up by Fox, which Slashfilm reports is called Premature Maturation and comes from Sam Pitman and Adam Cole-Kelly. Imagine if a bunch of middle school kids overnight became the guys from The Hangover, while still mentally being kids a la Tom Hanks in Big. It sounds hilarious, actually, even without the connections to the previous comedies-- though it's also a little reminiscent of Hot Tub Time Machine. You know what, forget it-- all time-traveling or body-swapping comedies are going to be compared to each other no matter what. All you can do is hope to make it feel original, which hopefully is what Pitman...

I just heard about an interesting pitch that apparently just sold to Fox. The writing duo of Sam Pitman and Adam Cole-Kelly pitched a comedy called Premature Maturation, which is essentially the Tom Hanks movie Big, but with an ensemble of middle school kids who transform into adults and get into crazy misadventures ala The Hangover. Talk about high concept. Word on the tracking boards is the pitch sold for mid-six figures. Pitman and Cole-Kelly will likely pen the script. No director or cast is attached. Pitman and Cole-Kelly sold another pitch in November of 2009 to Paramount for an R-rated comedy titled The Misadventures of Fluffy. That project has been described as a road trip through New York featuring talking animals featuring "an element of social comedy reminiscent of the 1980’s film Trading Places." Eddie Murphy is producing, and Pitman and Cole-Kelly are writing the screenplay.

Fox recently bought a new comedy film pitch and it's not a remake or reboot! However, it's not terribly creative. The pitch given by writing duo, Sam Pitman and Adam Cole-Kelly for a film called, Premature Maturation. It's described as Big meets The Hangover. The story is about a group of middle school kids who transform into adults and crazy shenanigans ensue! It's likely that Pitman and Cole-Kelly will write the script. The project is obviously in the very early stages so there is no...

For the fourth consecutive year Hollywood has selected its Black List, a compilation of the top unproduced screenplays for 2009. Over 300 film professionals were asked to submit the titles of up to ten of their favorite screenplays. The only condition for the picks were that the projects would not be released in theaters this year. That means some of the Black List honorees may be in the process of being turned into movies but by far the majority remain thoughts on digital ink, a blueprint for grand dramatic ideas, high-reaching adventure and controversial ideas waiting to be burned to light.
For a screenplay to have made it onto the Black List it must have received at least five votes for it. Some scripts have five votes while the top-rated screenplay received 47 votes. That doesn't mean that the script with the most votes is the best screenplay of the year; it means...

Eddie Murphycould be feeling fluffy.
The A-lister is attached to produce and could potentially star in “The Misadventures of Fluffy,” a new buddy comedy that’s been set up at Paramount.
Sam Pitman and Adam Cole-Kelly sold the pitch for the R-rated comedy and will write the script. The project is described as a road trip pic through New York featuring talking animals, and with an element of social comedy reminiscent of Murphy’s 1980’s hit “Trading Places.”
Insiders emphasize that while Murphy is formally attached to produce, he is not formally attached to star at this point.
