Erick the Architect has moved 2,790 miles from New York City and landed in Los Angeles. As one third of legendary hip hop group Flatbush Zombies, Erick changed the soundscape of the genre as the trio’s rapper-producer — pushing the Zombies into bold new sounds and narratives that both confounded and inspired fans and cementing themselves as one of the most respected crews in hip hop.
While the tight-knit act has often been labeled as “psychedelic hip hop,” their music went beyond that narrative, and at times, explored the darkness of death and depression.

Juneteenth, which falls on June 19, commemorates the fall of slavery in the United States.
It celebrates the anniversary of the order made by Major General Gordon Granger on June 1965 that proclaimed freedom for slaves in Texas. The order was actually made two years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
In a tweet Monday, former President Obama explained it as the “delayed but welcome news of freedom reaching the enslaved Black folks in Galveston, Texas.” In 2021, President Biden made Juneteenth a federal holiday.
Many networks are marking the occasion with Juneteenth TV specials or movie marathons showcasing Black talent and/or excellence. See our viewing guide below:

The shortlists for the Academy Awards’ two music categories are out, and while there are few surprises among the 375-member music branch’s 15 choices for best original score, there’s a remarkable shift in the original song category: Nearly half of the 15 songs on that list emerged from narrative films or documentaries whose casts or subjects were predominantly Black.
Most of these songs had already been tagged as leading contenders, even though it was hardly a certainty they’d all make the shortlist. Among them: Janelle Monae’s “Turntables” from the voter-suppression doc “All In: The Fight for Democracy,” Mary J. Blige’s “See What You’ve Done” from the prison-sterilization documentary “Belly of the Beast,” John Legend’s “Never Break” from the young-actor doc “Giving Voice,” Leslie Odom Jr.’s “Speak Now” from “One Night in Miami,” H.E.R.’s “Fight for You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah” and...

As part of our new list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, we are publishing a series of pieces on the making of classic albums, Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly is ranked number 19 on the list.
The first time the Parliament-Funkadelic legend George Clinton heard the rising Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar, he was underwhelmed. “I knew ‘Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe’ and thought it sounded silly as hell,” the funkateer recalled.

Nominations for the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards will be announced on Wednesday, November 20, and it has been an especially good year for R&b thanks to new music from a series of rising stars like Khalid, Ari Lennox, Ella Mai, Anderson Paak and H.E.R., not to mention R&b mainstays including Fantasia, Raphael Saadiq, Mariah Carey and India Arie. And it wouldn’t be the Grammys without Beyonce, who released not one but two albums this year (“Homecoming: The Live Album” and “The Lion King: The Gift“).
Here are the top seven contenders who I think have the strongest potential to clean up in the R&b field this year.

In September of 1986, Miles Davis released Tutu, his first album for Warner Bros. after three decades as a Columbia artist. But what fans of the late trumpeter didn’t know at the time was that he had originally started recording an entirely different LP for the label. Begun in 1985 and eventually shelved before it was complete, that album — Rubberband — will finally come out on September 6th, following a preview Ep that came out on Record Store Day 2018.

Smokey Robinson lends his vocals to Anderson .Paak’s soulful new song, “Make It Better,” set to appear on the musician’s upcoming album, Ventura, out April 12th.
“Make It Better” boasts a throwback groove of dusty and punchy bass fleshed out with slick guitars, silky strings and more futuristic synth flourishes. The lyrics find .Paak detailing the ups and downs of a relationship, but always striving to make things work, while Robinson provides some tender back-up harmonies.
“Make It Better” arrives with an Andy Hines-directed music video as well.

For the second year, Spotify brings early presents for every kind of music fan under its proverbial Christmas tree with 15 new tracks added to its hit playlist, Spotify Singles: Christmas Collection. The new batch is a mixed bag of artists, with boy band Why Don’t We’s rollicking “Feliz Navidad” to alt-guitar virtuoso Jim James laying down a threadbare rendition of “Oh My Christmas Tree” to Meghan Trainor picking up the sweet and timeless “White Christmas” (which she recorded in Spotify’s Nashville studio last spring.)

Pharrell may be the go-to guy if you’re looking for a hit song, but he’s probably also the guy to go to if you’re looking for a potential Academy Award winning song, too. After the Despicable Me 2 track, “Happy,” nearly got Pharrell the award for Best Original Song, it’s only logical that he’d head back to the drawing board to see which original tracks he can cook up for another movie next. His newest venture comes in the form of the song, “Runnin’,” for the upcoming film, Hidden Figures.
Pharrell actually contributes two songs to the movie – one solo track in “Runnin’” and then a duet with Lalah Hathaway in “Surrender.” Both songs have some similarities between each other with a retro throwback feel, but that makes sense given the time period that the movie takes place in. Hidden Figures, which releases on December 25th,...

Yesterday, Toronto experienced Hidden Figures Live! Following select footage from Hidden Figures, an audience at the Toronto International Film Festival was treated to a live concert with performances by Pharrell Williams, Kim Burell, and Lalah Hathaway and appearances by Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe!
You can watch highlights from the experience now.
Hidden Figures is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe)—brilliant African-American women working at Nasa, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.
Hidden Figures will hit theaters on January 13, 2017.

The Toronto International Film Festival provided a soft landing for about 30 minutes of scenes from Theodore Melfi’s “Hidden Figures,” the 20th Century Fox drama about three African-American women who provided the mathematical brainpower that helped launch John Glenn into space.
To be clear, the film’s official release date is January 13, 2017 — for now. However, this comes out of Elizabeth Gabler’s Fox 2000 division, which also shepherded “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Life of Pi,” and the studio has been considering its awards options on the title for months. They worked with Tiff to create an official event for the unfinished film — rare for the festival, which generally reserves its attention for completed works.

Kim Fields is bringing her fourth "Holiday Love" special to life this Christmas season, but this year there's a new twist.
A money-hungry reality TV producer starts recruiting pregnant women to take part in his show with the hopes that one of them gives birth on Christmas and their baby can be the real-life baby Jesus on the show.
Fields tells Zap2it that the idea for the special came to her and husband Christopher L. Morgan when they revealed her second pregnancy.
"It was when we did the announcement on 'The Real' over the summer. ... Once we realized the response we were getting and the outpouring of love and support, we were like, 'Ok, what if we finish it out by doing 'Holiday Love' as the final shebang.'" says Fields.
