This is Day 106 of the WGA strike and Day 33 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
A backup singer featured in the Oscar-winning 2013 documentary 20 Feet from Stardom had center stage on Tuesday morning at a musical picket line outside NBCUniversal headquarters in Manhattan. On a crowded thoroughfare at Rockefeller Center, Janice Pendarvis led other vocalists and several dozen SAG-AFTRA picketers in call-and-response verses and choruses of the protest anthem, “Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me ’Round.”
It was the first of three solidarity marches uniting musicians and actors on SAG-AFTRA’s Tuesday pickets schedule, with events also happening in Nashville and Los Angeles. In New York, Pendarvis marched and harmonized with her 20 Feet co-star Lisa Fischer as well as singer and former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant Peppermint. They were joined on the picket line by Juno and The Umbrella Academy star Elliot Page.

Over the years, multiple documentaries have been made about The Rolling Stones. Films have tracked the band’s performances, dynamics, and disagreements as far back as the 1960s. Here are four documentaries about The Rolling Stones that fans of the band should watch.
The Rolling Stones | Paul Natkin/Getty Images 1. ‘My Life as a Rolling Stone’ is a documentary series
My Life as a Rolling Stone is a four-part documentary series that dedicates one episode to each member of the band. While the episode that focuses on Charlie Watts relies on archival footage, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Ronnie Wood sat for interviews.
The series touches on the history that fans know well — drug busts, notable performances, and tax exile, for example — but also presents the members of the band as individuals. This approach allows viewers to see each of their contributions to the band, which has remained together for decades.

When Chanel Haynes showed up at Milan’s San Siro Stadium to sing “Gimme Shelter” with the Rolling Stones on June 21, she had a lot on her mind: She had spent the past few months in London portraying Tina Turner in the West End production of Tina, and there was a show that night. But this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity — alongside a good chance to cede the stage to her understudy — even though it would eventually cost her her day job. On the last-minute flight to Italy, she played several different renditions of “Gimme Shelter,...

With great power comes great responsibility. So viewers of The Voice were reminded with Monday’s Fan Week episode, in which viewers picked the numbers that the Top 11 performed. When Michael J. Fox moved to the U.S. from his native Canada about 40 years ago all he was thinking about was being an actor and landing, at the very least, some commercial work.
He booked a McDonald’s commercial in 1980. He eventually shot to fame as Alex P. Keaton on TV’s “Family Ties” and became a box office draw with films like “Back to the Future.” In his four decades in show business, Fox has earned five Emmys, two Golden Globes and two SAG Awards.
But in 1991, at age 29, he was told he had Parkinson’s disease. Two years after going public with his diagnosis, he launched the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research to help fund research for therapies and cures. The organization has since raised more than $1 billion.

The aspirants for best original song from a film this year include Pharrell Williams, a performer-writer who’s familiar in the theme-song field; Regina Spektor, a singer-songwriter who’s just getting her feet wet with big-screen assignments; Diane Warren, whose name is nearly synonymous with the category; and Cynthia Erivo, who surprised everyone by being someone to reckon with for her music as well as acting contributions to her film.
A few words from the forces behind this strong quartet of songs:
“Stand Up” from “Harriet”
Actress-singer-songwriter Cynthia Erivo wanted to conclude “Harriet,” in which she plays slave-turned-abolitionist Harriet Tubman, on a strong musical note.
“After spending so much time with Harriet and her story,” she tells Variety, “I felt it was necessary to have a truncated version, in a song, of the work that she had done, so if there were things that didn’t quite understand when you watched the movie,...

This is the Pure Movies review of Twenty Feet From Stardom, directed by Morgan Neville and starring Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, Judith Hill, Claudia Lennear, Darlene Love, Tata Vega and more plus interviews with legends such as Mick Jagger, Sheryl Crow, Bete Midler, Sting, Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder. I gnash at what I’m forced to write, it is meme, a denudation of the language, a declaration of fused dendrites in my Broca’s Area: a cliché—but there is only one term for it. 20 Feet From Stardom, to echo the movie posters, is a ‘feel-good’ film, in the most honest way possible; it is earned.

For all the problems that come with the annual awards season frenzy, the great thing about it is that people who aren’t always in the foreground, but who are essential to a production can be appreciated, from sound design to visual effects. It’s fitting then that Twenty Feet From Stardom – a film which puts the spotlight on the backing singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of our time – was deservedly triumphant at the Oscars earlier this month. Directed by Morgan Neville (whose previous documentary subjects include Muddy Waters and Johnny Cash), it has a legitimate case for being the feel-good movie of the year so far.
Neville has assembled a host of ebullient and candid singers to help him chart the rise of backup artists. All hailing from church backgrounds, the focus of the pic is on a handful of female, African-Americans; Darlene Love, Táta Vega,...

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the fun photos of Oprah, Naomi Campbell, Rita Ora and my wife, Georgina, at the party featured in her article pose a strange juxtaposition to the less-than-enthusiastic description her words gave. This is a great year for music documentaries. Earlier this year, I absolutely adored Sound City at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival (you can buy/rent it from iTunes now), but another stellar music centric documentary I missed was Twenty Feet from Stardom. The film traces the back-up singers’ history from those famous Phil Spector–produced pop songs and British Explosion acts of the 1960s, to their reversal of fortune when the recording industry changed in the 1990s, and into today complete with interviews with names like Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger and more. "Which movies did you enjoy the most at Sundance, Debbie?" is a line I've heard often since returning from Park City. Despite several narrative favorites, the subcategory that really stood out was music documentaries. Two of these films will screen at SXSW next month: Twenty Feet from Stardom, the first film acquired at Sundance 2013, and Sound City, produced and directed by David Grohl of The Foo Fighters and Nirvana.
The festival opened with Twenty Feet From Stardom wowing audiences onscreen and later, offscreen with special performances. Producer/director Morgan Neville is no stranger to music docs, having directed several for television including Brian Wilson: A Beach Boy's Tale, Sam Phillips: The Man Who Invented Rock'n'Roll, Johnny Cash's America, Search and Destroy: Iggy and the Stooges' Raw Power, and several American Masters and Biography series spotlighting music icons.

Park City, Utah -- Not wanting "Twenty Feet From Stardom" to be over when it's over is a perfectly reasonable reaction to seeing the film.
