Now that Halloween season is over, it feels a little empty playing eerie soundtracks and revisiting favorite nightmares. The atmosphere just isn't quite there. But that's easily fixed, and few things build atmosphere more deftly than music. I've spent improper amounts of time trying to find artists who evoke the spirit of horror and Gothic fiction, but since music isn't a narrative genre by definition, it can be a nebulous process. Some musicians just go perfectly with certain storytellers, though. Here are five performers who complement a few of my favorite authors scarily well:
Clive Barker and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Both hailing from England and rising to fame in the same decade, Barker and Cave seem like a duo destined for emotional evisceration. Barker’s stories evoke an urban landscape that's gritty and hard, but also full of transcendent wonder. His language is high, poetic, and epic...

“When a child was a child…”A man’s voice is heard, reading out words as they are written in thick ink on paper.…it didn’t know it was a child”He continues, some of the words delivered in sing-song, joyfully, as if they were a children’s nursery song:“Everything was full of life/And all life was one...”His voice is friendly voice; a comforting voice; a voice that we will soon learn belongs to Damiel (Bruno Ganz), an angel who watches over the city of Berlin and its inhabitants with the curiosity and reverence of a child. Damiel has such deep affection for human life that he is willing to eschew immortality for earthly pleasures and the most intoxicating human experience of all: love. Both Damiel’s voice and those of the humans he consoles and studies feature prominently on the film’s soundtrack, sometimes in isolation,...

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds Beacon Theatre, NYC June 15, 2017
Much is being written that Nick Cave's current tour of Skeleton Tree may be his best yet. Seeing Mr. Cave and The Bad Seeds' performance last night at the Beacon Theatre in New York City, I would agree. Playing every song from that album except "Rings of Saturn" plus another eleven classic songs (set list here) from his catalog, it was a show that will be difficult to rival by any touring act this year or quite possibly until Mr. Cave decides to tour again. Quite remarkable given that he's a few months shy of his 60th year on Earth.
Channeling both rage and ragged beauty, he is singer of staggering charisma. Plunging himself into the open arms of adoring fans almost from the start, his rich, booming baritone never missed a note in any of songs, even those...

Happy New Year! It's been a tumultuous year for me and for many of us of a certain age. I lost a brother. The world lost a slew of pop culture -- Carrie Fisher, Alan Richman, Craig Sager, John Glenn -- and music icons -- Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen, George Michael, et al. One comfort for me was music and my rediscovery of vinyl. The warm, comforting sound of analog became my daily meditative fix. Quite literarily. Seeking out vinyl "nuggets" became a quest to help me deal with my own pain and depression. Chasing down albums that I owned thirty years, abadonded at the advent of those shiny new things called compact discs. Restorative analog power reigned o'er me. One of my chief caveats: I would not purchase anything on vinyl that I already owned on compact disc. Well, that rule didn't last long as I found comfort in...

“I don’t believe in narrative anymore… I don’t think life is a story,” Nick Cave says early in Andrew Dominik’s documentary One More Time With Feeling. He’s explaining—haltingly yet articulately, as he does throughout—the reasons why the songs he’s written lately have taken a turn toward the abstractly expressive, away from the precisely realized murder ballads and apocalyptic love songs for which he’s known. His songs no longer follow any linear sense or strive for satisfying resolution, Cave says, because life doesn’t work that way. And even though the director interjects to disagree, his film doesn’t strive to tell a story either. Rather it’s a loose assemblage of studio vignettes, interviews, and poetic musings structured around the completion of The Bad Seeds’ 16th album, The Skeleton Tree, one that’s often deliberately ramshackle in its fumbling improvisations and inclusion...

Andrew Dominik’s “One More Time With Feeling” originally began as a performance-based concept film centered around the making of a brand new Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds album, but it evolved into something much more complex and emotional. Dominik and Cave eventually sought to dive more deeply into the personal backdrop of the writing and recording of the album, one that was marked by intense personal tragedy, as Cave had recently lost his young son when the film went into production.
As our Ben Croll explained in his Venice review of the film, “Understandably, the singer didn’t want to tap that raw nerve with every Tom, Dick and Harry doing press rounds, so instead he tapped friend and collaborator Andrew Dominik (Cave wrote the score to ‘The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford’) to wrangle some kind of promo doc-cum-earnest exploration, and to improvise it all on the fly.

Iron Spyder, a short film directed and produced by Melbourne filmmakers Christopher Mitchell and Yoav Lester, has made its world premiere at the Us.s biggest genre festival, Fantastic Fest.

Last year Nick Cave and Warren Ellis reunited to score David Mackenzie’s “Hell or High Water,” which premiered at Cannes in May ahead of its theatrical release. The duo released the official soundtrack to the critically acclaimed film this past August, and have now shared the music video for the song “Comancheria.”

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ new album, Skeleton Tree—just released today—is kind of a gut punch. More so than even your typical collection of Nick Cave songs. Recorded shortly after the tragic falling death of his 15-year-old son, the tracks are saturated with grief.
For reasons that seem sort of masochistic, Cave invited a film crew into the studio for the recording process. The result is Andrew Dominik’s making-of documentary One More Time With Feeling, featuring interviews with the Seeds and narration by Cave himself. To coincide with Skeleton Tree’s release, he had this excerpt from the film uploaded to YouTube. If you heard “I Need You” already and didn’t think it could get more emotionally grueling, prepare to be wrong.

Shrouded in grief and chilly to the core, Andrew Dominik’s mournful documentary “One More Time With Feeling” is at once sobering in tone and intoxicating in style. The intimate film follows singer Nick Cave in and out of the studio as lays down tracks for his upcoming album “Skeleton Tree,” doing so in the face of tremendous personal loss. Though it will undoubtedly hit fans the hardest, even those less familiar with the Australian rocker will find much to admire in this lyrical portrait of sorrow, creativity and perseverance, shot in luscious black and white 3D.
Cave commissioned the film himself, intending it to be his first, last and only public statement to support the release of his latest album, and it’s easy to understand why. In July 2015, Cave’s 15-year-old son Arthur died, falling off a cliff in the English town of Brighton. Arthur died before Cave...

Serial killers have long been a source of inspiration for musicians, especially those within genres such as metal and rock which frequently display an interest in dark subject matter and controversial topics. Think about Guns N’ Roses covering Charles Manson’s Look At Your Game, Girl, or Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds creating a record of fictional Murder Ballads. Then, of course, there’s the fact that practically the entire lyrical focus of genres such as death metal and grindcore are about morbid themes like killing, grotesque experiments and mass murder.
Most intriguingly and creepily, there have been hundreds and hundreds of songs by rock, metal and hip-hop artists that have gone one step further than merely exploring these issues. Instead, these songs are about real-life serial killers and, in the most horrifying and eerie examples, often involve the singer taking on the identity of the murderer. The...

Instead, these songs are about real-life serial killers and, in the most horrifying and eerie examples, often involve the singer taking on the identity of the murderer. The...

Sad news for Nick Cave. The Bad Seeds singer’s 15-year-old son Arthur died Tuesday after falling from a cliff, according to the Sussex Police. Police said that the younger Cave fell from the cliffs of Ovingdean Gap and was found with life-threatening injuries at 6 p.m. Tuesday. He later died of those injuries after being transported to a hospital. See photos: Hollywood's Notable Deaths of 2015 Foul play is not suspected in Cave’s death, police said. In a statement, Nick Cave and his wife Susie called Arthur (pictured at left) their “beautiful, happy, loving boy.” “Our son Arthur died on Tuesday evening.

It seems all too appropriate that the beautifully spooky trailer for "Crimson Peak" is premiering on Friday the 13th. Writer/director Guillermo del Toro's putting the goth in gothic with this ghostly fairy tale about a young newlywed who discovers that her new husband has some rather ghastly secrets.
Mia Wasikowska stars as Edith Cushing, a curious young author who's just married and moved in with Sir Thomas Sharpe, played by Tom Hiddleston. Unfortunately, it seems they have to share their sprawling castle of a love nest with his sister Lady Lucille Sharpe (Jessica Chastain), and whatever unruly ghosts roam the halls of Crimson Peak. Charlie Hunnam plays Dr. Alan McMichael, an old friend of Edith's who seems to be rather smitten with her. Who could blame him?

After the half drunk, half melodies of a Jeff Tweedy look alike and the smooth, heartfelt schtick of Uke-Hunt, Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds took the stage in denim jackets, striped shirts and swaths of spring reverb. For those unacquainted, Kid Congo Powers has had a long history in music, playing with such legendary acts as The Cramps, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and The Fall. At 55 years old, it’s clear he has no intentions of slowing down with The Pink Monkey Birds, whose two chord, high energy garage punk had the audience bouncing, shouting and laughing along […]...

By most accounts, Nick Cave is a particular taste, only occasionally entering pop culture by covering iconic songs or collaborating with pop superstars like Kylie Minogue. Yet the man who “sings every line like a Batman villain” thrives on film. His idiosyncratic brand of storytelling songwriting morphs to the occasion. It’s a strange phenomenon of film – that particular songs about particular experiences can become so universal in the right filmmaker’s hands. But this isn’t merely a songwriter whose early work is continually reembraced and reimagined like Leonard Cohen. Nick Cave is a ghost who haunts cinema with his melancholy and anger, and a noticeable presence within it – creating, scoring and performing for the camera. 20,000 Days on Earth, out this week, reinforces his image as the cinematic preacher, depicting 24 fictional hours of his life, but his life on screen stretches much farther – especially in these 7 glorious uses of his music and presence. Wings of Desire...

From Battlestar Galactica to Farscape, Doctor Who and more, Juliette cheers on 10 TV characters who made a big first impression...
Some characters slip onto our TV screens quietly and sneak into our hearts slowly. We watch them develop and grow, and come to love them over time, sometimes despite very inauspicious beginnings (being eaten by a wheelie bin springs to mind).
Others make more of an impression from the get-go.
In this list, we’re celebrating some of the most memorable and impressive entrances of characters from TV shows. To make the list, a character had to be (or eventually become) a regular or frequently recurring character – no one-shot wonders here. And note this is a list for TV characters, so you won’t see any Captain Jack Sparrow or even the Borg Queen – all of these had to make their big impression on the small screen.

Peaky Blinders series 2 will feature a Pj Harvey version of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' 'Red Right Hand'.
Star of the BBC drama Cillian Murphy and the show's music producer Flood announced details of the show's soundtrack on BBC Radio 6 Music today (September 24).
Flood spoke about reworking Harvey's music for the show, saying: "I was trying to do something very different, which is to deconstruct all of Polly's [Pj Harvey's] old material and then weave it through in the underscore to make it very cutting edge, very post-modern, and set about creating music for the historical period but that was also fresh."
The soundtrack to Peaky Blinders series 2 will also feature music by Paul Hartnoll (Orbital), Johnny Cash and Arctic Monkeys.
Peaky Blinders returns to BBC Two on October 2 at 9pm.
Digital Spy named the soundtrack to the show's first series as one of the ten coolest on TV last year.

Films from notables Nick Cave, Kevin Smith and Terry Gilliam, and another featuring Downton Abbey vet Dan Stevens are helping fill this weekend’s box office, despite studio blockbuster debuts for The Maze Runner and This Is Where I Leave You.
In all, 14 specialty films are debuting this weekend, at the front edge of awards season and the time of year when “serious” films hit the screens left and right. We have The Guest, with Stevens; The Zero Theorem by Gilliam; Smith’s Tusk; Tracks, the latest from the producers of The King’s Speech; and Cave’s doc 20,000 Days On Earth.
And, like a TV informercial, there’s more: the doc Pump, boundary-jumper Stop The Pounding Heart; and Swim Little Fish Swim. Just to fill out the marquees, we also have Tribeca-winning doc Keep On Keepin’ On; Flamenco, Flamenco; Hector And The Search For Happiness; Iceman; Hollidaysburg; and Not Cool.

Though he’s never been a superstar, after four decades of making music there is no question that Nick Cave is a legend. Singer, songwriter and occasional composer, Cave has been playing in bands since he was in his teens, from his post-punk group The Birthday Party, to his back-to-basics side project Grinderman, to his solo work and his band, The Bad Seeds, for over 30 years. Though his music has only ever crossed over into the mainstream a few times (notably the soundtrack staple “Red Right Hand” and Kylie Minogue duet “Where The Wild Roses Grow”), he has nevertheless amassed an army of dedicated fans all over the world. The new documentary “20,000 Days On Earth” is neither the career retrospective nor concert film you might expect, but rather a snapshot of the musician, now 57, still trying to connect with his muse. One of the most unlikely collaborations in pop history came in 1995, when Kylie Minogue appeared on Nick Cave's Murder Ballad 'Where The Wild Roses Grow'.
The pair remained friends and have reunited, Minogue appearing in Cave's upcoming film 20,000 Days on Earth.
"Kylie, we just on the off chance, we got her to sing this song. It became this kind of minor hit in its day," Cave said.
"She came in this beam of light into our lives for a short time.
"It was a beautiful thing to be sitting with her in this way driving around in this car. it was great."
Other guests in Cave's car during the movie include Ray Winstone and former Bad Seed Blixa Bargeld.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds have unveiled a previously-unreleased song 'Give Us A Kiss'.
The track features in upcoming film 20,000 Days on Earth.
It is released as a digital single today (September 4), backed with 'Jubilee Street' (Live from The Sydney Opera House). A limited edition 10" vinyl follows on November 10.
"'Jubilee Street' forced its way into our film," said directors Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard.
"We'd planned to end with 'Push The Sky Away' and its pertinent lyrics about rock 'n' roll getting you right down to your soul; but after the band played 'Jubilee Street' at Sydney Opera House, we didn't stand a chance.
"Only four songs in and there was Nick, transforming in front of us. Our lives haven't been the same since."
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds are Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Martyn Casey, Thomas Wydler, Jim Sclavunos, Conway Savage, Barry Adamson and George Vjestica.

No one could ever accuse Jonathan Glazer of opting for quantity over quality. The British filmmaker has made only three movies in the span of 14 years, including his latest, Under the Skin. During that time, and before he made his feature debut in 2000 with Sexy Beast, Glazer directed music videos for Radiohead, Unkle, Massive Attack, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and more of your favorite bands. He also has done commercials for Nike, Audi, Guinness and Motorola. Glazer has a résumé to brag about. He’s done well for himself, which is probably why our interview with him is at the Chateau Marmont, which smells of money. Maybe it’s all the 20-year-olds coming in and out with their Rolls-Royces that gives it that scent. Still, the rather cozy and surprisingly low-key hotel is an ideal place to speak with Glazer. And the 49-year-old director is in good spirits when we meet him. He...

2014 is already underway and looking set to be one of the most impressive years for music fans of the 21st century. With already-confirmed new releases from artists such as Morrissey and Palma Violets, it seems a rock resurgence is definitely on its way to overthrow the vicious dictatorship of mindless pop music that has been decimating the charts of recent years.
This musical upheaval has been longed for by many for years now, with it seemingly beginning to come into fruition almost exactly a year ago with a return from the Thin White Duke himself (David Bowie) and his first album in ten years “The Next Day”. Alongside this was stellar new albums from Primal Scream (More Light), Queens of the Stone Age (…Like Clockwork) as well as Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (Push the Sky Away), which wowed the public and critics alike.

The first clip from Nick Cave's upcoming film 20,000 Days on Earth has been released.
The 50-second snippet shows the singer sat at a typewriter, while in a voiceover he contemplates the writing process.
Directed by Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, 20,000 Days on Earth is a fictionalised account of the 20,000th day of Cave's life.
The film is narrated by Cave and features an appearance by actor Ray Winstone, as well as a cameo by the 56-year-old's one-time collaborator Kylie Minogue.
Last November, Minogue joined Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds on stage at London's Koko for a performance of their 1995 hit 'Where the Wild Roses Grow'.
The duet was also filmed for inclusion in the movie, which is scheduled for release later this year.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds have been one of the most interesting acts in music over the past 20 years. Defining them as ‘goth-rock’ is a bit like calling Led Zeppelin heavy rock – it doesn’t do the amazing variety of their tracks justice. While Cave himself is the only member of the group that has remained throughout its tenure, the countless roster changes have become seamless and have allowed the group to constantly evolve in a way that remains thrilling for its audience.
Between Cave’s elegiac lyrics and the musicianship of the group – which has contained a who’s who of Australian rock- the Bad Seeds have become known for both tender love songs and disturbing menacing grooves, humourous lyrics as well as homages to the Bible and myths.

Did that just happen? What a year for music! We had the return of some real musical behemoths (David Bowie, Daft Punk), we were gifted with some astronomical debut albums (Disclosure, Haim, London Grammar) – and as well as all this we were swimming in dazzling albums from bands that have stomped footprints over our hearts over the last decade: The Strokes, Vampire Weekend, The National.
Whilst cross-genre “Best Of” lists such as these can be derided by the cynic as being about as useful as comparing the day Tuesday with the colur blue, let’s not forget what lists like these are really for – a lot of fun. They allow us to celebrate the albums we played to death over the past 12 months, hopefully highlight some albums that our readers might have missed, and give you the chance to validate your taste in music (I’m joking!).

U2, Nirvana, Depeche Mode, Arcade Fire, Joy Division, and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds isn’t a shabby list of names to be associated with in any capacity, and those are just a few of the bands that Anton Corbijn has directed iconic music videos for. The renowned photographer and filmmaker has always presented his subjects through a vision of his own, leading to a long history of famous images. His feature films haven’t been huge hits with the public though. So far Corbijn has only made two pictures – Control and The American – and, by their own accord, they’re not for everybody. The American even downright angered some filmgoers expecting a more action-heavy Clooney picture, but those aren’t the viewers Corbijn is aiming to please. The director is the subject of a new documentary, Anton Corbijn Inside Out, and for the digital release of the film, Corbijn...

Earlier this year, Nick Cave and his longstanding collaborators, The Bad Seeds, released their first new album in five years, Push The Sky Away. The album proved true to form even after founding Bad Seed Mick Harvey’s departure in 2009, showing that as Cave ages, he’s yet to lose any of his signature bite. Now Cave the Bad Seeds have announced that they'll be going out on a North American tour in 2014 and releasing a live album, Live At Kcrw, during Record Store Day’s Black Friday event.
