After a decade of pushing to get the adaptation off the ground, Peter Dinklage's The Thicket is finally being realized. Based on Joe R. Lansdale's 2013 novel of the same name, the Game of Thrones alum first came onboard the adaptation in 2014 as both a star and producer, alongside Gianni Nunnari, Shannon Gaulding and Andre Lemmers. The movie wouldn't gain proper steam until 2020, when pre-production began with director Elliott Lester and stars Noomi Rapace, Charlie Plummer and Sophia Lillis, though the trio would be replaced due to scheduling conflicts after the movie was impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Juliette Lewis and Peter Dinklage are unlikely outlaws, and cruel and bloody killers to boot, in the trailer for Tubi’s dark Western The Thicket, which dropped on Tuesday.

“You’re the littlest man I’ve ever seen,” Lewis, who plays violent gang leader Cutthroat Bill, tells Dinklage’s character, crafty bounty hunter Reginald Jones, a grave-digging alcoholic son of an ex-slave and a street-smart prostitute, at one point in the trailer.

“You’re the ugliest,” Reginald, no less a violent killer than Bill, shoots back. Director Elliott Lester’s film has Reginald on a collision course with Bill after her gang kidnaps the sister of Jack, an innocent young man played by Levon Hawke, the son of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke.

Closer than ever to coronation, Netflix has released the trailer for Part 1 of the sixth and final season of its hit period drama “The Crown.”

The final season of the series will span 1997-2005 with the four-episode Part One depicting the relationship between Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) and Dodi Fayed (Khalid Abdalla) and the 1997 car crash in Paris that killed them.

Director David Fincher and writer Andrew Kevin Walker joined forces for Se7en back in the ’90s, and they reunite for this year’s brand new Netflix thriller The Killer.

Who doesn't love David Fincher? I did not love "Mank." But I still love David Fincher, and I know you do too. However you feel about that last feature, it's been a while since Fincher had a real consensus banger, and that's the kind of film he's known for. Viewers loved his Netflix series "Mindhunter", but hey, that's television, and Fincher only directed seven out of 19 episodes. Could "The Killer" slingshot Fincher back to the top of the American auteur pyramid, knocking the likes of Paul Thomas Anderson, Steven Soderbergh, Gina Prince-Bythewood, or any of his other Gen X competitors off the top spot?

That remains to be seen. But we do have a new trailer for the film, a follow-up of the trailer Netflix released way back at the end of August. There have been more developments than the mere release of a second trailer since then, too. People have seen the movie.

Operating in a similarly pulpy register to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl, The Killer is probably David Fincher’s most lightweight literary adaptation to date. Based on the French graphic novel series of the same name, this comparatively barebones action thriller has none of the social commentary or pop psychology that color those earlier films and their page-turning source material, instead following a titular, unnamed hitman (Michael Fassbender) and his efforts to cover his tracks after a botched contract turns him and his girlfriend (Sophie Charlotte) into the new targets of his paymasters.

David Fincher is known for doing lots of takes while filming, but Michael Fassbender upped the ante while filming “The Killer” by apparently never blinking when the camera was on him. The film’s cinematography Erik Messerschmidt revealed the detail in the latest issue of Empire Magazine. Messerschmidt previously worked with Fincher on “Mindhunter” and “Mank,” the latter of which won him the Oscar for best cinematography.

“I believe that you have to be impossible to deal with to be any good at this — you have to be completely uncompromising, to the absolute limit, or you’ll never make anything good,” Messerschmidt said of working with Fincher. “And that’s scary. I see these masters of their craft, fighting for every inch.”

Messerschmidt called Fassbender “the perfect actor for David”, with Empire noting that he also mentioned “how the focus puller highlighted something remarkable: the actor didn’t blink on camera for the entire shoot.

IndieWire can confirm that David Fincher’s latest film is a surprise addition to the Spotlight Selection at NYFF 2023. “The Killer” will screen October 14 at 7:00 p.m. at the Netflix-owned Paris Theater and October 15 at 8:45 p.m. at the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center.

David Fincher’s latest feature, The Killer, earned 6 minutes and 45 seconds of applause Sunday evening at the film’s world premiere screening at the Venice Film Festival.

The atmosphere inside the room following the premiere was respectful, with Fincher in attendance without his main cast but with a healthy contingent of Netflix collaborators and his filmmaking partners leading the applause. As a Netflix production, the film is not eligible for SAG’s interim agreement program.

The pic, based on Alexis Nolent (pen name: Matz) and Luc Jacamon’s graphic novel series, stars Michael Fassbender and is Fincher’s first feature since 2020’s Mank, also for Netflix, which scored 10 Oscar noms, including Best Picture, and won two.

David Fincher spooked Venice with the world premiere of his latest movie “The Killer,” which stars Michael Fassbender as an assassin. The Netflix thriller earned a respectable 5-minute standing ovation at its screening on the Lido on Sunday night.

Fassbender and co-star Tilda Swinton couldn’t attend the premiere because of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Fincher walked the carpet alone, with a small group of Netflix executives, as he signed posters of some of his most beloved movies, from “Fight Club” to “Se7en.”

But Fincher must not have received the memo about Venice’s tradition of showering movies with standing ovations after a gala premiere. As the audience clapped for him, he uncomfortably shifted on his feet and flailed his hands in the air and mouthed: “What is this?” A producer led him down the stairs from his balcony seat to meet fans, but Fincher thought he was leaving the theater.

Said Fincher, “The task at hand is relatable, it’s dramatic, it’s high stakes and in a lot of ways it’s extremely procedural, there are a lot of boxes that you need to tick before you exhale and pull.
