She became famous in the late 00s as Effy in Skins, and now she’s back in Netflix drama Senna. She talks about growing up poor in London, why she loves doing action films – and the pitfalls of taking her kids to work
As well as an eight-year-old son and a two-year-old daughter, Kaya Scodelario is the dedicated parent of a 10-year-old French bulldog called Arnie. She is hiding from at least one of them during our video call, and says it’s the dog.
She is in the cosy and, crucially, locked spare bedroom of her home in north London, where she sits cross-legged on the floor. Creature Commandos is right around the corner and the hope among fans is that the Max animated series will set the tone for the Dcu and perhaps even answer a few lingering questions everyone has about this reboot.
There are already rumblings about a Batman appearance, suggesting the Dark Knight is an established hero in this world. That's something we took as a given when it was made clear The Brave and the Bold will introduce the hero's 10-year-old son, Damian, as Robin.
Answering a fan on social media, DC Studios co-ceo and Superman director James Gunn explained why he intends to skip the origin stories of both the Man of Tomorrow and Batman.
"I’m not telling Batman and Superman’s origin stories again because everyone knows them," he noted before launching into a defence of James Mangold's plans for a Swamp Thing movie.
"Don’t put Swamp Thing in the corner.

At 86, Ridley Scott is on the cusp of releasing one of the biggest films of his career — “Gladiator II” — and already has at least two additional projects lined up for 2025, a reteam with Paul Mescal and a Bee Gees biopic. With no signs of slowing down.
He’s not the only Hollywood veteran who’s still making movies: Martin Scorsese, who turned 82 this year, made one of the best films of his career with “Killers of the Flower Moon” while Clint Eastwood (94) has what might be his final film, “Juror #2” in theaters now.

All eyes are on James Gunn’s Superman, which will set the tone for his DC film universe for years to come. The director and CEO of DC knew he had to dedicate time to post-production in order to make it look right, “If you do some research you’ll see my films have always taken a different approach and I’ve always given my VFX artist-collaborators time to do their jobs properly, and the respect they deserve.” He explains, “This is why we wrapped on Superman a year before release and why they’ve been hard at work on many shots for months before that.“
So, would this mean a teaser could be ready for release sometime soon? Perhaps in coordination with a couple of possible family holidays coming up? According to Collider, back in October, a fan asked Gunn on Threads if there would be a teaser or...

Superman fans have been anxiously awaiting a first look at some footage from James Gunn's upcoming Dcu reboot, and the first teaser for the movie might be released online a little sooner than we were expecting.
Gunn has already confirmed that he will not be present at Ccxp in São Paulo, which runs from the 5th to the 8th of December, but we had heard that the trailer will debut on Wednesday, December 25th during one of the scheduled NBA games.
Now, Collider is reporting that the trailer is tentatively expected to arrive online around mid-December, and could screen in theaters with Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King on December 20.
Several online scoopers seem to have backed this up with the usual nods and winks, and since this would be around the same time the fourth episode of Creature Commandos drops, there's speculation that Gunn might be planning some kind...

Sources tell us Chau is playing Nelly Dean, the film’s chief narrator, with Oliver as Isabella Linton. Shazad plays Edgar Linton, a wealthy, aristocratic man who marries Catherine Earnshaw (Margot Robbie). The actors come to the project after Warner Bros snapping it up in a fierce bidding war, with a commitment to a theatrical run with a big P&a spend. We're still not exactly sure when the first trailer for James Gunn's Superman will be released (you can find out what we've been told here) or what we can expect from the footage, but actor Frank Grillo has now shared his reaction to being given a "sneak peek" at the highly-anticipated teaser.
Grillo, who will make his live-action debut as Rick Flag Sr. after voicing the character in next month's Creature Commandos, revealed to Collider that he got to see a "little bit" of the trailer.
“I got a sneak peek at a little bit of the trailer, and I’m not joking, and I’m not blowing this out of proportion, my skin was hot and I had goosebumps. That’s how great it is."
Grillo was also full of praise for our new Man of Steel, David Corenswet.
“By the way, this kid, David [Corenswet], is going to be a superstar.

Having first watched F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent horror classic Nosferatu: A Symphony Of Horror as a child, and then directed an amateur stage version in school aged just 17, it would be fair to say that for Robert Eggers, his own cinematic take on the quintessential vampiric chiller has been a long time coming. But whilst much of the focus in the build-up to The Witch director’s Nosferatu has been on its old-school Gothic vibe, its all-star cast (Lily-Rose Depp! Bill Skarsgård! Nicholas Hoult!), and what sounds like another legendarily difficult Eggers shoot, few could’ve guessed his movie’s secret weapon — a Tik-Tokking Romanian granny!
As Eggers reveals to Empire in our Ultimate 2025 Preview issue, one of the most challenging sequences of the movie to shoot was the one in which Nicholas Hoult’s estate agent Thomas Hutter arrives in a rural Transylvanian village en route to Count Orlok...

The first social media reactions for Robert Eggers' Nosferatu promised a creepy, gory and surprisingly sexy adaptation of the classic vampire tale, and this is reflected in the MPA's official rating.
Nosferatu has been rated R for “Bloody violent content, graphic nudity and some sexual content.”
Another press screening for the movie recently took place, and you can check out some new reactions below.
Bill Skarsgård genuinely is unrecognizable as Count Orlok in #Nosferatu. A transformative role, whose likeness is more obscured than ever by hair/ makeup/ prosthetics, vocal work & imposing physicality. Terrific stuff. Movie magic!

Nosferatu earned that rating with its bloody violent content, graphic nudity, and some sexual content.
An unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the original Nosferatu has the following synopsis: In this highly influential silent horror film, the mysterious Count Orlok (Max Schreck) summons Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim) to his remote Transylvanian castle in the mountains. Max has announced that Juror #2, Clint Eastwood’s latest (and likely final) movie, will arrive on the streaming service on December 20th.
The announcement comes after a bit of controversy surrounding the film’s release — Warner Bros., Juror #2’s distributor, chose an extremely limited release, screening the movie in fewer than 50 domestic theaters before it inevitably headed to Max. Furthermore, the studio opted for little-to-no advertising, declined to report domestic ticket sales, and even initially removed it from the awards page of their website.
The minimized strategy is said to be an effort by the studio to protect Eastwood from a major box office or critical disappointment. Yet, despite having strong audience impressions and favorable reviews, Warner Bros. still seems totally indifferent to giving Eastwood’s film a larger release.
Even director Guillermo del Toro wondered why Eastwood’s work was getting stifled by the studio, raving about the film on Bluesky.

Clint Eastwood is a legend among legends. The actor and director is potentially getting ready to retire, and since he's firmly in his 90s, it's fair to say he's earned it. But Eastwood had at least one more for the road in the form of the acclaimed courtroom drama "Juror #2." Luckily, viewers won't have to wait too long to be able to watch this one from the comfort of home since Warner Bros. didn't let it have a long run in theaters. The film will be readily available to watch before Christmas.
"Juror #2" was released in just 50 theaters with the studio not even reporting the box office returns. Warner Bros. had apparently planned to give this a direct-to-streaming release in the first place, but instead opted to let it have a brief run in limited theaters, perhaps to qualify for the Oscars. $3.8 billion. That’s the amount of money Clint Eastwood’s films have grossed at the North American box office throughout his career. A superstar since the 1960s, Eastwood is rare in that almost all of his biggest blockbusters, including all the Dirty Harry movies, were all made for Warner Bros. It’s been his home studio since about the time he made The Outlaw Josey Wales. He’s made everything from Oscar-winners to action movies, to movies where he’s chilling with his pal Clyde the Orangutan for them, and they almost always ended up at least breaking even. Sure, he’s had a few flops, but even in his golden years, he still cranked out smash hits for them, with American Sniper making over half a billion dollars, while The Mule and Sully both made over $100 million domestically. Even when his movies didn’t do well, Eastwood keeps his...

If you’re tired of Hallmark movies, a legal thriller from a living legend is the perfect holiday counter-programming. “Juror #2,” which people keep describing as possibly Clint Eastwood‘s final film even though I wish they wouldn’t, is coming to Max on Dec. 20, the streaming service announced Tuesday.
The release date comes amidst a controversial limited theatrical run for the film. Warner Bros. Discovery only released “Juror #2” in about 35 theaters, mostly for awards-qualifying purposes, which some feel is disrespectful to a filmmaker of Eastwood’s stature for what could be his final film, which I hope we’re not willing into being by saying it over and over again. “Has everyone at that studio forgotten what they owe Eastwood’s legacy?” IndieWire’s Tom Brueggeman wrote in a column arguing that Warner Bros. After an extremely limited theatrical release caused hubbub from film fans online, Clint Eastwood’s “Juror #2” will be streaming on Max in December. The courtroom drama has set a Max streaming release date for Dec. 20, just in time for the holidays.
The film stars Nicholas Hoult as a family man who finds himself on the jury for a murder trial, only to discover the deceased individual is a person he accidentally killed in a hit-and-run. Does he speak up, or vote to convict the innocent individual to save himself?
Warner Bros. quietly released the film on Nov. 1, but only put it in fewer than 50 theaters nationwide. The decision flummoxed many as Eastwood’s film received positive reviews and his previous feature, “The Mule,” was a box office success when it opened in 2018.
In his review for TheWrap, critic Michael Ordoña praised Hoult’s lead performance and called the film “a...

Academy Award winner Clint Eastwood’s legal thriller Juror #2, starring Nicholas Hoult (upcoming Superman), has been set to begin streaming exclusively on Max on Friday, December 20.
News of the premiere date follows the film’s quite limited theatrical release on November 1 to less than 50 theaters nationwide. The move saw distributor Warner Bros. Pictures draw criticism from many corners for not properly supporting perhaps one of the final films of a legendary 94-year-old director — a project that has also happened to garner positive reviews, from someone with a longstanding history with the studio.
Among the prominent voices in the filmmaking community who have advocated on Eastwood’s behalf is Guillermo del Toro, who recently took to rising social platform Blue Sky to discuss his experience with the film. Said Del Toro in part, “We saw [the film] at the Grove with a significant crowd that was vocal and responsive all the way. I...

James Gunn has about "four different things that [he] could do" after 'Superman'.The 58-year-old director and DC Studios co-ceo is currently finishing working on the 2025 superhero blockbuster – which stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel and Nicholas Hoult as villain Lex Luthor – and Gunn has now teased there are several ideas he could peruse for his next cinematic venture.During an interview with Collider, the filmmaker said: "I've got like four different things that I could do, and I'm going to kind of jump back and forth between those things. I'm going to see which one really speaks to me, and that's the one I'm gonna do."While he didn't go into detail about what each of these projects were, the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' director affirmed the movies will have to fit neatly into DC new cinematic universe. He explained: "One thing that I’ve tried...

If you had any doubt that the awards season was in full swing, Sunday night’s 15th Annual Governors Awards ceremony answered it.
If you are, or in any way think you might have a shot at an Oscar nomination this year, and were in Los Angeles, it is most likely I might have run into you last night at Ovation’s Ray Dolby Ballroom where this jam packed ceremony saluting this year’s honorary Oscar recipients took place. In fact, just the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences’ PR team’s tip sheet was two pages of 207 single spaced names who were expected to attend (and by my count did) show up, not just to honor the deserving winners of the evening, but also perhaps to be in this place which is packed with Oscar voters who might be reminded to see your movie, if they haven’t done so already.

DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn still isn't sure which Dcu project he'll direct after Superman, but he's not short of a few options.
While speaking to Collider, Gunn reiterated that he is heavily involved with upcoming projects Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Lanterns, but has yet to decide which movie or series he'll step back behind the camera for.
“I've got like four different things that I could do, and I'm going to kind of jump back and forth between those things," Gunn told the site. "I'm going to see which one really speaks to me, and that's the one I'm gonna do.”

The 15th annual Academy Governors Awards on Sunday night brought tears and laughs to the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood, as usual packed with Oscar hopefuls and AMPAS voters as the awards season gets into full swing.
With preparations for the March 2 Oscars (ABC) underway with two of last year’s executive producers (Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan) and edgy new host Conan O’Brien, the Governors Awards gave out five honorary Oscars to their second casting director, New York veteran Juliet Taylor (Lynn Stalmaster was the first), presented by Nicole Kidman (“Babygirl”) who took her shoes off to meet the mic.
Other honorees included “James Bond” producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, presented by bearded former Bond Daniel Craig (“Queer”); writer/director and humanitarian Richard Curtis, presented by an hilarious Hugh Grant (“Heretic”); and the late, great Quincy Jones, presented by a sincere Jamie Foxx.

DC Studios missed this year's San Diego Comic-Con, leaving Marvel Studios to steal the show by highlighting its upcoming Avengers movies, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and a few other exciting projects.
Since then, the studio has also teased its slate at two different D23 events, something that's gone a long way in ensuring the MCU has overshadowed DC Studios' Dcu plans.
The hope had been that they might dominate next month's Ccxp event in Brazil, but James Gunn has confirmed that neither he nor Peter Safran will be in attendance. This surely lessens the chances of us getting a Superman trailer and robs DC Studios of another opportunity to hype up its film and television plans.
Outside of Gunn's frequent social media updates, the "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" lineup hasn't been showcased since DC Studios was formed in January 2023.

Who knew pop star Ariana Grande was an adept musical comedienne? That surprise discovery should land her an Oscar nomination for Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of the global hit musical “Wicked”, which will prove a box-office juggernaut. On that much “Screen Talk” co-hosts Ryan Lattanzio and Anne Thompson agree; but he hates the cheesy visuals and loves Jonathan Bailey’s charismatic supporting turn as the romantic interest of both witches-in-training, while Anne admires the music, well-produced by Marc Platt and delivered with gusto by Cynthia Erivo and Grande.
“Wicked” follows Steven Spielberg’s recent “West Side Story,” which earned seven nominations in 2022 and a win for another supporting discovery, Ariana DeBose. And Rob Marshall’s film version of Bob Fosse’s “Chicago” (2002) was also one of 10 musical Best Picture winners. But we agree they were executed with more visual and technical mastery.

Guillermo del Toro is being the judge on the theatrical rollout for Clint Eastwood’s “Juror #2.”
The Academy Award-winning director took to social media to question why Warner Bros. only gave an extremely limited theatrical release to Eastwood’s critically acclaimed legal thriller. The film opened November 1 in merely 31 U.S. and Canadian theaters, as well as in six European countries; it expanded to a handful of additional U.S. cities for its second week in theaters.
Del Toro is now urging audiences to go to the theaters to support “Juror #2,” while also asking Warner Bros. to hopefully leave the feature in theaters for longer.
“Went to the theatre to see ‘Juror #2,’ Clint Eastwood’s latest film. We enjoyed it tremendously. It’s — in some ways — his ‘Crimes and Misdemeanors,'” Del Toro wrote, via World of Reel. “The film is precisely and assuredly filmed and it’s Nicolas Hoult’s to lead.

A two-time Oscar-nominated actor known for his serious chops, Jude Law, has been spreading his wings a little bit and trying out the world of franchises in recent years. His first foray into that blockbuster domain was “Sherlock Holmes” with Robert Downey Jr. In recent years, he did a stint in Marvel’s “Captain Marvel” alongside Brie Larson, and next month in December, he joins the “Star Wars” universe in Lucasfilm’s upcoming series, “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.”
We recently caught up with Law to discuss his upcoming FBI/white supremacy drama, “The Order,” directed by Justin Kurzel (“Macbeth”) and co-starring Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Jurnee Smollett, and many more.

While the Arrowverse was mostly a mixed bag in terms of quality, one thing that the CW DC shows excelled at was the casting, whether it be Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman or his cousin, played by Melissa Benoist. Similar was the case for Arrowverse‘s Lex Luthor, Jon Cryer, who remains one of the most comic-accurate versions of the Superman foe in live-action.

Superhero films bring a lot of success and fame to those who star in them. Be it the Dcu or Marvel, those who head projects can easily earn in the millions. While this is surely an added benefit, in all of their success, it seems that Hollywood has forgotten what these films actually mean to the fans. Many actors have talked about roles they took within these franchises, chalking their motivations to be purely financial.

Due to this, many fans have been wary about the actors that are getting cast in upcoming projects. Most recently, comedian John Mulaney talked about his interest in playing Plastic Man. The description given by the actor may cause fans to get upset, and James Gunn may be one of them.

We may never know the full list of actors who auditioned for the lead role in DC Studios' Superman. However, British actor Tom Brittney has now confirmed he was among those who got to suit up for James Gunn.
Reports swirled at the time that he was a finalist for the role, with David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult rounding out the final three. The latter was eventually cast as Lex Luthor, with Corenswet ultimately given the opportunity to play the Man of Tomorrow.
Whether Gunn will find Brittney, best known for roles in Grantchester and Invasion, another character in the Dcu currently remains to be seen.
Talking on the Hellish podcast, Brittney revealed, "It was actually Henry Cavill's Superman suit - it was his actual suit. It takes about half an hour to get into it - to get sewn into it. And yeah, I think I might have accidentally ripped it.

James Gunn has yet to finalize the new Dcu’s Batman actor. He has already got numerous suggestions from fans as to who will be a better-suited actor for the role. However, rarely do these fan castings get a celebrity endorsement. Blake Lively has now supported the Batman chatter surrounding Brandon Sklenar, her co-star in It Ends With Us.

Fans saw the two share amazing chemistry in the film and even got to witness the actor getting intimidated by Lively’s husband Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. However, fans are not too thrilled about Lively’s suggestion, which probably has more to do with her current reputation than Sklenar’s skills.

When Warner Bros. quietly dropped Clint Eastwood’s latest film into just a handful of U.S. theaters last month, plenty of people took notice. Despite rolling “Juror #2” out at Los Angeles’ AFI Fest — where our own critic Christian Zilko slapped a “Critic’s Pick” designation on it and hailed it as “one of the best studio films of 2024” — the worryingly anti-filmmaker studio did little else in the way of supporting this original legal thriller from one of our most accomplished living filmmakers.
The film was released in less than three dozen U.S. cities during its first week of release, and though a few more were added for its second week, finding screenings in even major metropolitan areas has proven tough for Eastwood fans. It really shouldn’t be: The film is indeed one of the best studio efforts of the year, the kind of adult-skewing fare smart cinephiles remain hungry for,...

Robert Eggers has already made it clear that the Lily-Rose Depp you see onscreen in “Nosferatu” is all real: No CGI was used to enhance how physically and psychically mad she goes under the spell of demon-lover vampire Count Orlok (Bill Skårsgard).
But the writer/director revealed more details about her unhinged performance as Ellen Hutter in a Q&a for Academy members in New York over the weekend, moderated by “Tàr” and “Little Children” director Todd Field. Lily-Rose Depp, who already showed a willingness to stretch her bounds in terms of choreography on HBO’s glitteringly messy series maudit “The Idol,” helps turn this 19th century gothic “Nosferatu” into a story of female possession — which, as Eggers pointed out, was central to F.W. Murnau’s original film and Werner Herzog’s 1979 take, “Nosferatu the Vampyre,” which featured “Possession” star Isabelle Adjani (yet another movie this one will inevitably draw...

The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here) is set to reach theatres on Wednesday, December 25th – and while there has been a lot of talk about the transformation Bill Skarsgard (It) underwent to play the title character (Skarsgard himself has said that playing Nosferatu / Count Orlok was like “conjuring pure evil. It took a while for me to shake off the demon that had been conjured inside of me. … I do not think people are gonna recognize me in it.“), it has been confirmed that we won’t be seeing a good shot of the dead Transylvanian nobleman until the movie reaches the big screen.
An unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the original Nosferatu has the following synopsis: In this highly influential silent horror film, the mysterious Count Orlok (Max Schreck) summons Thomas Hutter...

Bill Skarsgard was "terrified just looking at the image" of Count Orlok in 'Nosferatu'.The 34-year-old actor plays the dreaded Transylvanian vampire in the upcoming horror flick – which is a reimagining of the 1922 silent picture 'Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror' – and Skarsgard has now admitted the character's appearance was far more frightening than that of his Pennywise the Dancing Clown costume from his two 'It' movies.Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, he said: "I was terrified just looking at the image. It looked so, so different from me, way more so than Pennywise. "I was worried that I couldn't perform through it, that it would feel like giant prosthetic pieces, and I couldn't come alive through that."As for the sound of Orlok, Skarsgard revealed that director Robert Eggers wanted the evil character to have a "very deep, resonant voice" but also "frail" to add to his unnerving portrayal.
