Hollywood likes to pretend that it’s in a constant state of self-improvement, and that the days of blackface and Mickey Rooney as Mr. Yunioshi are far in the past. But we aren’t that far removed from Zoe Saldaña playing Nina Simone, FX casting a white British actor as a budding Middle Eastern despot in Tyrant or Catherine Zeta-Jones playing notorious Colombian drug kingpin Griselda Blanco in Lifetime’s Cocaine Godmother.
I hope we can all agree that whatever divine and legal sanctions she deserved for being, by all accounts, quite monstrous at times, Griselda Blanco did not deserve the throughly bizarro accent and makeup job that accompanied Zeta-Jones’ performance in Cocaine Godmother.
If nothing else, Netflix’s six-part Griselda is an adequate representational corrective. Colombian actress Sofía Vergara plays Blanco, with a latex job that doesn’t really make her look like Griselda Blanco, but definitely makes her look like “Not Sofía Vergara.

Following its initial release on AT&T Audience Network back in 2019, the entire third season of Mr. Mercedes (based on Stephen King's Bill Hodges trilogy) is coming to Peacock on March 4th, joining the first two seasons on the streaming service:
Press Release: Based on the best-selling Bill Hodges trilogy by Stephen King, Mr. Mercedes returns for its much-anticipated third season. When beloved local author John Rothstein is found murdered, Hodges, Holly, and Jerome, along with local police, must track down his killer. But this case is more complex than the cold-blooded killing of an American icon. Unpublished novels of Rothstein’s were stolen from his home, and they are worth millions. As the case unfolds, the trio learns that although Brady Hartsfield may be gone, his depravity lives on in the lives of his victims.
Season three of Mr. Mercedes premieres on Thursday, March 4 on Peacock. All 10 episodes will drop at once.

Mr. Mercedes may have a fourth season after all. The series, which is based on a trilogy of works by Stephen King, has been picked up by Peacock. Seasons one and two will arrive on the streaming service next month while season three will arrive at a later date.
The three seasons of the dramatic series initially aired on AT&T Audience Network. The series has been in limbo since Audience ceased operations in the spring. While Peacock has not renewed Mr. Mercedes for a fourth season, it's favorable that the streaming service has picked up the existing seasons.
Revolving around a retired detective who's plagued by a serial killer, Mr. Mercedes stars Harry Treadway, Brendan Gleeson, Kelly Lynch, Jharrel Jerome, Mary-Louise Parker, Holland Taylor, Justine Lupe, Breeda Wool, Scott Lawrence, Ann Cusack, Jack Huston, Tessa Ferrer, Maximiliano Hernández, and Nancy Travis.

Mr. Mercedes has found a new home in NBCUniversal’s recently launched premium streaming platform, Peacock.
The move to Peacock yields a new lease on life for Mr. Mercedes, the Stephen King adaptation crime series, which started life in 2017 as a broadcast offering on the AT&T-owned, DirecTV-exclusive Audience Network, only to be left derelict with an uncertain future after the channel’s dissolution this past January. With the move—announced on Sept. 21, King’s birthday, of all days—Mr. Mercedes Seasons 1 and 2 will be bingeable on Peacock starting on October 15. That premiere will eventually be followed by the show’s most recent outing, 2019’s Season 3, which will arrive on a date to be announced.
The series, which operates under a prolific creator/showrunner in David E. Kelley, adapts King’s novel trilogy—2014’s Mr. Mercedes, 2015’s Finders Keepers and 2016’s End of Watch—into a serialized format. The...

The show previously aired on Audience Network but that network was shut down by AT&T in January, leaving the show’s remaining scripted shows in limbo. “Mr. Mercedes” aired its third season late last year, with the series having received strong critical acclaim throughout its run.
As part of the deal, Seasons 1 and 2 of “Mr. Mercedes” will stream exclusively on Peacock. Both of those seasons will debut on Oct. 15 on the streamer, while the premiere date for Season 3 is yet to be determined.
Based on the New York Times Best-Selling Bill Hodges trilogy by Stephen King, “Mr. Mercedes” follows a retired detective (Brendan Gleeson) who is tormented by a serial killer (Harry Treadaway) through a series of letters and e-mails, causing him to set out on a dangerous and potentially felonious crusade to protect his loved ones and himself.

Once upon a time, the Marvel Cinematic Universe did not rely simply upon post-credit scenes to add content to the fabric that holds its franchise instalments together. It also created short films – known as Marvel One-Shots – that were designed to provide an opportunity for the giant brand to experiment with other, lesser-known characters, while filling the gaps in storytelling that inevitably open up within the confines of such a vast narrative endeavour. These short films became highly anticipated gems, and were included with Blu-ray releases of theatrical movies. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been a Marvel One-Shot since 2014, but that may be a situation that’s heading for change.

Sicario
Written by Taylor Sheridan
Directed by Denis Villeneueve
USA, 2015
Tightly wound from the opening frame, Denis Villeneueve’s Sicario opens to the gripping sounds of Jóhann Jóhannsson’s gripping electronic score, as FBI agent Kate Macer (Emily Blunt) rides in an armored vehicle to an Arizona house linked with drug traffickers. Clad in full combat armor herself, as are her partner Reggie Wayne (Daniel Kaluuya) and the dozens of other agents with them. Like the viewer, Macer doesn’t know what exactly she’s getting herself into, but the foreboding look on her face as she takes deep breaths and tries to relax suggests that she has some idea of the danger lying ahead.
It comes as soon as she enters the house in the form of a brief and brutal shootout, but the worst doesn’t arrive until she and her fellow agents clear what appears to be the most imminent danger.

Chicago – Seeing the man behind the curtains in “The Wizard of Oz” really was when so many of us truly understood what “behind the scenes” means. Today, we’re fascinated by FBI and CIA stories because they grant us top-secret security clearance we’ll otherwise never have.

There’s so much talent behind the film Sicario it’s almost scary. You have a cast that includes Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benicio del Toro, along with the supremely talented director Denis Villeneuve at the helm and the legendary Dp Roger Deakins handling the cinematography. I’ve seen this movie twice in advance of its limited release this weekend and can vouch for it being excellent. In fact, it’s currently one of the ten best things that I’ve seen so far this year. 2015 still has a long way to go, but this is a memorable flick, to say the least, in no small part to the always excellent work from the legend that is Deakins. He’s yet to win an Oscar and folks, that’s a crime. Working again with Villeneuve after Prisoners, he’s got another shot to be in the running. The film...

Sicario Trailer. Denis Villeneuve‘s Sicario (2015) movie trailer stars Jon Bernthal, Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro, and Victor Garber. Sicario‘s plot synopsis: “In Mexico, Sicario means hitman. In the lawless border area stretching between the U.S. and Mexico, an idealistic FBI agent is enlisted by an elite government task force official to aid in the escalating war against drugs. Led by an enigmatic consultant with a questionable past, the team sets out on a clandestine journey forcing Kate to question everything that she believes in order to survive.”
This looks like an exciting drama. I immediately thought of The Bridge and Traffic when I began watching this trailer. Emily Blunt is center stage and she owns ever scene. Her character seems to have gotten over her head with her “allies.”
Sicario also stars Jeffrey Donovan, Raoul Trujillo, Daniel Kaluuya, Maximiliano Hernández, Sarah Minnich, Lora Martinez-Cunningham, Alan D. Purwin,...

Even with as much planning as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, some scenes end up on the editing room floor…
This film has spoilers for every film in the Marvel cinematic universe.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe… if you’ve just clicked into this article, it’s likely that you need little reminding of how much it changed the landscape of Hollywood. But that won’t stop us recapping for continuity’s sake. Heck, it’s what Kevin Feige would want.
It began in 2008, then, with the landmark casting of Robert Downey Jnr as Tony Stark. It’s sometimes hard to remember how much a risk that was at the time, but heck did it pay off. The movie, directed by Jon Favreau, was strong, and a huge hit. And the notion of a post-credits sting was introduced. And it was a big one, too – Samuel L Jackson namedropping the Avengers Initiative.

With the one-two punch of Prisoners and Enemy, Denis Villeneuve (pictured above) delivered two of the most tense, visually engrossing thrillers in years, and there’s no reason to suspect that the director’s next project, drug runner drama Sicario, will break his winning streak. Lionsgate has set a September 18th limited release for the pic, with plans to expand into more theaters a week later.
Emily Blunt stars as an idealistic FBI agent who gets in over her head when she is introduced to the shadowy world of international drug trafficking by two members of a government task force (Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro). Enlisted in a daring plot to take down a Mexican cartel boss, the agent must rely on her wits and training to stay alive, even as the specifics of the mission lead her to question what ethical and moral lines she’s willing to...

Is Rick Grimes, The Walking Dead's beleaguered former sheriff, too far gone? In season five's midseason finale, Rick (Andrew Lincoln) brutally hit Sgt. Bob Lamson (Maximiliano Hernandez) with a car after the cop attempted to run and warn Dawn (Christine Woods) of the rescue mission. Were you one of the Gold Derby readers who accurately predicted this week's shocking "The Walking Dead" results? In the biggest bloodbath since last winter's finale when Hershel (Scott Wilson) and The Governor (David Morrissey) met the grim reaper, this week saw the end of the road for Beth (Emily Kinney), Officer Dawn Lerner (Christine Woods), Sgt. The Walking Dead, Season 5, Episode 7: “Coda”
Directed by Billy Gierhart
Written by Seth Hoffman
Airs Sundays at 9pm Et on AMC
It’s all table setting …
Matthew 27:52
“…and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life.”
Only one episode of The Walking Dead remains until the winter break. Season 5 has been a hell of a ride, complete with cannibals, the death of Bob, and a community held prisoners by a bunch of renegade cops. “Crossed” cuts back and forth between four groups in four different locations in order to set up the big midseason-finale. While it seems a wise decision to check back in with Rick and Michonne after several episodes spent elsewhere, the episode feels like a filler/transitional episode. There are far too many characters to follow in far too many places, and the end result feels somewhat disjointed.

A review of tonight's "The Walking Dead" coming up just as soon as I enjoy this yo-yo... After the show spent much of the fall focusing on one subset of characters at a time, "Crossed" widens the net (and gives Glenn and Rosita one to fish with) in advance of next week's mid-season finale(*). Not all the characters are together at the moment — part of Rick's group joins Daryl and Noah in the plan to rescue Beth and Carol, while Father Gabriel escapes into the woods and Abraham's group deals with the aftermath of Eugene's confession and beating — but we got glimpses of all of them as they moved into place for whatever's coming in our last episode until February 8. (*) As is often the case with this show's finales, AMC isn't making next week's episode available in advance, so look for it sometime later than normal next Sunday night. As a result,...

As Sneak Peek first reported in January, several 'good guy' characters in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier", could be sleeper agents of 'Hydra', a terrorist organization in Marvel Comics, referencing the mythical 'Lernaean Hydra':
"Hail, Hydra! Immortal Hydra! We shall never be destroyed! Cut off a limb, and two more shall take its place! We serve none but the Master—as the world shall soon serve us! Hail Hydra!"
The organization first appeared in "Strange Tales" #135, headed by businessman 'Arnold Brown', who was killed as 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' tried to crush the organization. It soon returned funded by 'Baron Wolfgang von Strucker', with the support of Third Reich super-villain the 'Red Skull'.
Possible Hydra agents in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" could include Robert Redford's character 'Alexander Pierce'.
Maximiliano Hernández's character 'Jasper Sitwell'.
Garry Shandling's character 'Senator Stern'.

Marvel’s promise that everything will change after Captain America: The Winter Soldier was no understatement. A solid plot, witty banter, some very surprising returns and couple seeds for future films resulted in what may well be the best Marvel film yet. Marvel seems dedicated to show that not all comic book movies are the same. The upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy is clearly set up to be an action comedy, and Winter Soldier is at its heart a political intrigue thriller. It still carries the hi-tech trappings and gadgets of a superhero story, but it’s a much more grounded film, touching on rather sober topics like dealing with life back home after a term in combat, the eternal questions of how much freedom will people surrender in the name of safety, and the simple question, “Who do you trust?”. There’s no way to discuss the film without hitting numerous spoilers,...

‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’: The second best of the Marvel films (photo: Chris Evans in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’) With each new Marvel superhero film that bullies its way into multiplexes, the magnitude of the company’s achievement gets more impressive, if not historic. Focusing just on the Marvel characters controlled by Disney (as opposed to Sony’s lockup of Spider-Man and Fox’s oversight of X-Men), they’ve launched three successful individual franchises (Thor, Iron Man and Captain America) and another franchise combining all the separate characters, the first of which became the third highest-grossing film of all time (The Avengers). Each movie contains characters or story threads that feed the other movies, creating what amounts to a visually and monetarily profligate series of old-school comic book crossover issues. The industry has never seen anything quite like it and the biggest surprise is that, by varying degrees,...
