- He is the son of famed sportswriter Mickey Herskowitz. He and his brother, Steve Herskowitz, started competing in Judo at an early age and were both competitors at the 1980 Olympic trials. He is a world champion in Judo and Brazilian Jujitsu. He holds a black belt in three disciplines, Sorengi Kempo, jujitsu, and he is a 5th degree black belt in judo. He has two daughters, Maggie and Bailey with his wife Gina Hecht.
- His wife, Gina Hecht, plays "God" in the movie Odessa or Bust (2001), which he wrote and directed.
- A fifth dan (5th degree black belt) in judo, he's the current U.S. Defending multiple U.S. Master's National Champion as well as a gold medalist in the 2009, and 2016, silver medalist in the 2005, bronze medalist 2012 Master's World Championships,
