This past Saturday, I was counted among the many who made their way to Mbt Expo Center for the latest extravaganza put on by The Monroe Pop Fest (formerly Monroe Comic-Con). Even though I’m no stranger to covering events in the state of Michigan, this was actually only my second time attending this particular one. I was able to stay for only a fraction of the day on the previous occasion, so I was doubly excited knowing I would be hanging around for the entire day this time.
If you’re also from the Metro Detroit area or live in its vicinity, then you’ve probably at least attended the bigger shows like Motor City Comic Con, Michigan Comic Convention or Youmacon. Should you not be familiar with Gary Pillette’s contribution to the geek scene, you really ought to add it to your schedule going forward.

Throughout the course of my time covering conventions for We Got This Covered and previous sites I’ve worked for, I’ve stressed how I think it’s important for those of us in the geek community to attend events of varying sizes. Be they large, small or something in between, you’re bound to meet a favorite celebrity of yours, stumble across a rare comic book or collectible, and will no doubt make a few new friends along the way.
That said, I ventured back to the Commonwealth Commerce Center in Jackson, Michigan this past Saturday to take in MeggaXP V: The Fifth Experience. Considering how 2016’s offering remains one of my fondest con memories, I’ve made it a point to attend James Seagraves’ events whenever I can.
Though every vendor, crafter and comic creator had been condensed to one showroom this time around, there was still a lot to go over.

Graphic novel Rottentail heads to the big screen with an adaptation by Brian Skiba and co-creator David C. Hayes. Starring Corin Nemec, William McNamara, Dominique Swain, Laurie Love, Gianni Capaldi and Byron Browne, Rottentail tells the bizarre tale of young Peter Cotton, who grew up in the town of Easter Falls and loves rabbits…
Peter’s Science project on rabbit breeding is ruined when the school bullies beat up, and actually kill, his rabbit. Years later, the kind but still shy Dr. Cotton works steadily and gently with his rabbits to cure human infertility. Unbeknownst to Peter, the military is perverting his work, developing fierce soldiers with strength far exceeding a human of their size, and with Peter’s fertility serum, the ability to breed in the field. Peter discovers the true nature of the experiment and attempts to stop it. But in an accident of poetic justice, a bite...

Due to a variety of circumstances, I’d unfortunately missed out on the past few major events to reside under the MeggaXP umbrella. In an effort to correct this, I made arrangements to check out this year’s edition of Blood Bash, one of the better horror conventions one could hope to find in Michigan. Once again setting up shop at the Commonwealth Commerce Center in Jackson, it’d obviously grown since its debut in 2017.
For starters, I could swear there were more vendors and crafters on hand than I’d seen when I was last there two years ago. Though this celebration of the macabre differs from the larger MeggaXP insofar that it’s confined to one showroom, there was certainly much to explore. Furthermore, video and tabletop gaming were other options presented, not to mention horror-themed carnival games which yielded tickets allowing the victors a chance to win...

We may be in the golden age of superhero cinema, but here are some DC movies that never made it…
Naysayers would have you believe that Hollywood chucks bucket-loads of cash at any old comic book movie pitch that happens to float through their corner-office window, get stuck to their shoe or come to them miraculously as an on-the-toilet epiphany.
However, this is not the case, particularly with DC comics characters. While some films that do get made may seem like bog-fodder (oh hey, Green Lantern), there are plenty of comic adaptation pitches, in-development scripts and passion projects that have ended up not getting made for various reasons.
We had a rummage through the aeons of DC cinema history (also known as extensive Googling) and pulled together all the comic book movie projects we could find that ended up in the bin of crushed dreams for Batman, Superman and more.

The reveal of the so-called real Lobo during last year's "Villains Month" caused a lot of controversy among comic book fans, so whether they'll embrace this new series remains to be seen. The official announcement reads, "If you find yourself rooting for the villains as much as the heroes, there’s a new series from Eisner Award-nominated writer Cullen Bunn and artist Reilly Brown coming your way: Lobo. The all-new Lobo brings the ultraviolence to this new ongoing solo series! But we'll also learn about the man behind the violence." Also announced by DC Comics today is Trinity of Sin from writer J.M. DeMatteis with art by Yvel Guichet and Jason Gordon. Forced to work together, this series picks up with the characters Pandora and the Stranger, following the ending of their solo series in September, and brings in The Question on a quest to save humanity and uncover the...

In a controversial move, DC decided to forego publishing its regular line of books and put out 52 one-shot stories featuring some of its best villains. The one-shots range from extremely popular (Joker, Lex Luthor, Brainiac) to the newer and more obscure (Relic, Shadow Thief). They feature some veteran creators and some who have barely drawn a comic. Each “Villains Month” book will get a decimal point after a regular DC Comic. For example, Joker will feature in Batman 23.1, Riddler will feature in Batman 23.2 etc. The first issue of the new DC event Forever Evil will come out the same month as the villain one-shots. It is a direct follow up to “Trinity War” and will be written by Geoff Johns and drawn by David Finch. There are quite a few “Villains Month” books, but the following comics either have great creative teams, continue a compelling storylines, or are simply intriguing.

Anthologies within our favorite genre are definitely trending upward, with V/H/S, The Abcs Of Death and other such fare making waves the past couple of years. Well, now you can add another film to the list of those joining the party. That would be Sinister Visions, a film that features five different stories, from succubi, zombies, demons, serial killers, and a segment entitled “Genital Genocide.” You’re decision one way or the other has been made by that segment title alone, I suspect. The project is preparing for screenings abroad over the summer and a DVD around these parts in the fall. Check it out.

What grabs you about a movie? Sometimes it's a kick-ass trailer that simply blows you away with awesome imagery and a peek into an amazing story. Sometimes it's the poster, a simple one-sheet that ropes you in, like the iconic Jaws poster or some of the creative shots for the Saw films. But sometimes all it takes is the title. That's definitely the case in Lance Polland's new film, Crack Whore.
There's not much that needs to be said after that title. You know it's going to be a hot mess of violence, blood and debauchery with a title like Crack Whore, and Polland assures us that's exactly what he delivers.
The veteran of such films as Bloody Bloody Bible Camp (featuring everyone's favorite hedgehog Ron Jeremy) and Slices, Polland has seen his share of blood and boobs. He is credited as writer and director on this project.

Group of scientists discover a method of reanimating the dead through stem cell research that results in a gunshot victim being brought back to life, but things go awry as he takes on violent tendencies.
Muddled, though intriguing film introduces Tiffany Shepis as the narrator and lead character of the film. However, her character isn't as instrumental to the story as some of the other characters and she ends up fading into the background for most of the second half. Still, she turns in one of the best performances of her career, to date. The story charts into standard stalk and slash in the last act. And the overall story doesn't feel complete.

Little Big Boy is, to say the least, a film like no other. It tells the story of acclaimed horror film director Jimmy Duncan, famous for his hot temper aswell as his very exploitative movies. Having witnessed the murder of his mother at the age of seven, Duncan grows up at an orphanage and as an adult works his way up in the movie industry.
Caught up in the downward spiral of his own success surrounded by movie reviewers who refuse to acknowledge his obvious talent, starlet wannabes with absolutely no talent, producers with little patience and people who will do anything and exploit anyone to become famous in an industry where you can count on no-one, we follow Jimmy while working on his fourth feature film “Death Stalker”, which quickly turns into a descent into complete and utter madness as his leading lady leaves the production halfway through the shooting.
