The Santa Fe International Film Festival is set to screen Night of the Cooters, the short film produced by George R.R. Martin and directed by Vincent D’Onofrio. Martin and D’Onofrio will attend the event for a Q&a scheduled for Wednesday, October 19 at the Jean Cocteau Cinema.
“We wrapped principal photography on Night of the Cooters back in August, you may recall,” he said in a statement. “That’s our adaptation of the classic short story by the one and only Howard Waldrop. Shot entirely in greenscreen in Santa Fe, from a screenplay by Joe Lansdale. Directed by Vincent d’Onofrio, who also starred. After that, we turned it over to the wizards at Trioscope, who have been busily working on it ever since with their groundbreaking animation process.”

George R. R. Martin’s adaptation of Howard Waldrop’s short story “Night of the Cooters” won best sci-fi at this year’s LA Shorts International Film Festival.
Directed by Vincent D’Onofrio, who also stars, the short film — a “tall tale” about aliens invading Texas in the 1800s — is a passion project borne out of 60-odd years of friendship between Martin and Waldrop. The project is a combination of live action and state-of-the-art CG.
“Night of the Cooters” was led by production studio Trioscope (“The Liberator”) and artistically steered by D’Onofrio, who directs and stars as “Sheriff Lindley.” Ramin Djawadi (“Game of Thrones”) composed the score.
“Night of the Cooters” also features Hopper Penn (“Signs of Love”), Harrison Page (“Better Things”), Luce Raines (“The Marksman”), Elias Gallegos (“The Marksman”), Cristin McCleary (“Westworld”), Martin Sensmeier (“Westworld”) and newcomers Jazzy Kim O’Brien (“The Creepers”) and Darius Eteeyun (“Rutherford Falls”).

George R.R. Martin has set his next project for screen, the short film Night of Cooters, based on Howard Waldrop 1987 sci-fi novel. Vincent D’Onofrio will direct and is set to star as Sheriff Lindley. Trioscope Studios will animate the film.
Earlier this week, the Game of Thrones author revealed the short film project on his blog. According to Martin, Night of the Cooters is “all about the time Martians invaded Pachuco, Texas.”
“Night of the Cooters is a short story, and our version is going to be a short film,” he shared. “I’d guess it will come in somewhere between 20 and 30 minutes, shot with a combination of live action and state-of-the-art animation. If you loved the story, we think you will love our movie.”
Joe Landsdale pens the screenplay. The series will also feature Hopper Penn as Sweets, Harrison Page as Luther, Martin Sensmeier as Leo Smith, Cristin McCleary as Atkins,...

“Kill or Be Killed” (2015) aka “Red on Yella, Kill a Fella,” is a low budget horror-western released on DVD by Rlj Entertainment that also attempts to be a tribute to the spaghetti westerns of the 60s and 70s and Sam Peckinpah’s “The Wild Bunch.” The plot is about a gang of outlaws in the year 1900 traveling 500 miles through Texas to get to a stash of gold that’s hidden at the bottom of a well in the sand dunes of Galveston Beach. The group is hounded on their journey by a mysterious being and one by one the gang members get picked off.
Like Peckinpah’s Wild Bunch these outlaws are a motley crew. Their leader, Claude “Sweet Tooth” Barbee, played by co-writer/director Justin Meeks, is very loosely based on real-life outlaw Sam Bass. As Meeks portrays him, Barbee is a man obsessed with...

The first poster has been added for the western thriller Sweet Vengeance, also known as Sherif Jackson. Logan Miller directs the film and wrote the screenplay alongside Noah Miller, from the story by Andrew McKenzie. Pic stars Ed Harris, January Jones and Jason Isaacs, as well as Eduardo Noriega, Stephen Root and Jason Aldean, Vic Browder and Luce Rains. I wouldn't have known that was January Jones judging from her red hair in the film's French poster, a change from the blond hair in X-Men: First Class. Sweet Vengeance is set in the late 1800s and tells of a fanatical religious leader, a renegade Sheriff, as well as a former prostitute who are destined to collide collide in the New Mexico Territory.

We return with another edition of the Indie Spotlight, highlighting recent independent horror news sent our way. This week’s feature includes a trailer for The Cabining, details on All Hallows’ Eve, and much more:
The Cabining: “Todd and Bruce, a hapless screenwriting team, get one last shot at success thanks to Todd’s wealthy stepdad, Serge. If they pen a worthy horror script, Serge will fund the entire project. But there is one condition – the script must be complete in two weeks. With the deadline looming and no fresh ideas, Todd and Bruce head to Shangri-La, a serene artist’s retreat, with the hope that the peace and company of fellow artists will inspire greatness… or, failing greatness, at least enough for straight-to-dvd. Shangri-La proves to be anything but serene, as the artists die off one by one, seemingly by accident. Bruce convinces Todd to soak in this...

Title: Here’s the Kicker Director: Chris Harris Starring: Ian Michaels, Sarah Smick, Luce Rains, Matthew Linhardt, Daniella Monet, Andrea Helene, Dan Lauria Given the expansive size of the United States, road movies are of course a staple of American independent cinema. One supposes that at a certain time (in the days of Easy Rider, maybe, and certainly before) they were a great way to showcase the sprawling natural beauty of this country, and the wonderful, weird diversity of its citizenry. Now it seems they’re mainly a substitute for the comparative heavy lift of actual dramatic or comedic writing, or an excuse for shoddy, catch-as-catch-can production values. Both of the latter are...
