Tom Burke, who played the sort of Mad Max-esque character Praetorian Jack in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and Maurizio Lombardi, who was recently seen as Inspector Pietro Ravini in the Netflix series Ripley, have been added to the cast of the Prime Video limited series Blade Runner 2099 – which is, of course, a continuation of the franchise that began with the 1982 Ridley Scott film Blade Runner and then got a long-awaited follow-up called Blade Runner 2049, which had Denis Villeneuve at the helm, in 2017. Deadline notes that Burke and Lombardi will both have recurring roles on the show, but details on their characters have not been revealed.

Introduction Adaptations of the works of Charles Dickens are numerous. Like ‘Shakespeare,’ if you can think of an alteration to the text, it has been done. Dickens' characters have sung, worn modern clothing, and even been played by muppets. FX in partnership with Hulu, has recently released their newest version of ‘Great Expectations’. The show sets up the classic story in an engaging way. Dickens’ penchant for poetry shines through Pip, the orphan who dreams of a better life. ‘Great Expectations’ follows Pip as he tries to rise in the social hierarchy. Young Pip is played by Tom Sweet. He combines a poetic and romantic disposition with an ambition that makes him stand out. He is raised by his cruel sister Sarah, played by Hayley Squires, and his kind brother-in-law Joe, played by Owen McDonnell. These characters not only give Pip a template to contrast himself with, but they also use him to their advantage.

A bereaved child moves to Jerusalem where she encounters a ghostly Palestinian girl no one else can see in this sensitive film about intergenerational trauma
Uncanny timing for an uncanny tale of Israeli-Palestinian history returning to haunt the present; in this case literally. This is a small-scale domestic drama with a supernatural tinge, set almost entirely in Jerusalem and Bethlehem and made by Palestinian film-maker Muayad Alayan, based on his own family history.
The story begins with Michael, a bereaved British-Jewish father (Johnny Harris), and his daughter Rebecca (Miley Locke) arriving in Jerusalem, looking for a new start after the death of their wife/mother in a car crash, a tragedy still fresh in both of their minds. They have inherited Michael’s father’s home: a grand old villa with plenty of light and space – not your classic haunted house. But Rebecca’s discovery of an old doll leads...

Ewan McGregor is no stranger to accents. The Scottish star earned an Emmy nomination for playing Minnesotan twins on “Fargo,” won TV’s highest honor for embodying the Iowa-born, Manhatten-bred Halston (in Ryan Murphy’s “Halston”), and should have an Oscar on his shelf for belting out impeccable love ballads as Christian, the smitten English author in “Moulin Rouge!” He’s channeled a stock American accent enough times for U.S. audiences to forget his natural intonation and tweaked his rounded enunciation to befit everything from salmon to sea otters.
So when tasked with playing Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov in Showtime’s eight-episode adaptation of “A Gentleman in Moscow,” I have no doubt he could’ve channeled a perfectly feasible Russian accent — and I am profusely thankful he didn’t. The series, which starts in 1917 and spans the decades-long establishment of the Soviet Union, allows McGregor to speak in...

The titular gentleman of “A Gentleman in Moscow” is Count Alexander Rostov, a Russian aristocrat played with sprightly joie de vivre by an enthusiastic Ewan McGregor. An aesthete with impassioned opinions about wine pairings, Rostov was born to live the life of leisure handed down to him by his landowning ancestors. The problem is that Rostov is a man unfit for his time. Before he can assume management of his family’s country estate, the Russian Revolution rudely intervenes. A populist poem from his student days spares Rostov the firing squad, relegating him instead to a lifetime of house arrest in Moscow’s fictional Metropol hotel.
Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Amor Towles, “A Gentleman in Moscow” follows Rostov through the doors of the Metropol and stays there through decades of Russian history, from the formation of the Soviet Union to Stalinist repression to World War II and beyond.

Plot: Count Alexander Rostov, in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, finds that his gilded past has placed him on the wrong side of history. Spared immediate execution, he is banished by a Soviet tribunal to an attic room in the opulent Hotel Metropol and threatened with death if he ever sets foot outside again. As the years pass and some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history unfold outside the hotel’s doors, Rostov’s reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery. As he builds a new life within the walls of the hotel, he discovers the true value of friendship, family and love.
Review: Ewan McGregor is a singular talent. The acclaimed actor can sing, share the screen with Winnie the Pooh, fight Darth Vader, and play a convincing heroin addict. He has also proven himself adept at sharing the screen with family members.

Injecting traces of whimsy into a historical tragedy is a precarious thing. If you do it well, you get Anthony Doerr’s All the Light We Cannot See, but if you do it poorly, you get Netflix’s All the Light We Cannot See. And it isn’t some clear-cut empirical thing, since Life Is Beautiful and Jojo Rabbit are Oscar-winning classics for some and unbearable pablum to others. (Me, I am Others.)
One person’s “restraint” is another person’s “excessively muted” and yet another person’s “still too darned sentimental.”
I’m here to praise Showtime’s A Gentleman in Moscow for its general restraint. The limited series take on Amor Towles’ 2016 novel tiptoes along an allegorical line, without toppling over into either outright whimsy or voyeuristic gawking at the flawed idealism and generational traumas of the Bolshevik Revolution. It’s a dark story that still has some levity,...

Amor Towles’s A Gentleman in Moscow was published in 2016, five years before Russia’s top opposition leader (and Vladimir Putin’s fiercest foe) Alexei Navalny returned to his homeland and was immediately imprisoned. Showtime’s eight-part adaptation of Towles’s novel, about a Navalny-like political prisoner in Russia, serendipitously makes its premiere not long after Navalny died in a Russian prison camp. But the comparisons between reality and fiction largely end there. A Gentleman in Moscow is a glossy, romanticized series that mostly suggests rather than shows the horrors of a totalitarian regime.
The story of the show echoes Navalny’s with its occasionally tin-eared, though still potent, portrayal of an unlikely dissident who refuses to abandon his country but has limited means to fight for it. In 1921, the perky-mustached Count Alexander Rostov (Ewan McGregor) is given a life sentence by a Soviet court for vague counterrevolutionary reasons. But instead of a gulag,...

Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead are husband and wife, and despite being married since 2022, the couple still used an intimacy coordinator on the set of the series A Gentleman in Moscow.
McGregor revealed in a recent interview why having an intimacy coordinator on the set was important while filming sex scenes for the series.
“It’s still necessary, because it’s also about the crew, and it’s odd to be naked in front of people, it’s odd to be intimate in front of the camera,” McGregor told Radio Times. “If you were doing a dance scene, you’d have a choreographer. It’s an important part of the work now, because it’s somebody that the director and actors meet in the middle.”
The actor also noted the importance of intimacy coordinators, especially now that his daughters Esther and Clara are also actors.

Many of cinema’s hard men are notorious softies in real life. Ray Winstone may well be one of those, even if he admits to not looking particularly approachable.
“My wife always says to me, ‘Why do you look like you’re going to kill someone when you walk into a room?'” he tells Variety. “But I don’t mean to!”
Winstone’s long-standing status as the go-to man to depict violent approach-with-caution individuals or British mob bosses continues to serve him, however, as “The Gentleman” — Guy Ritchie’s eight-part Netflix spinoff of his 2019 gangster comedy feature of the same name — proves. “If you want to make a TV drama about opium smokers, sadomasochists and imperial slavery in the 19th century, then write your own,” whines The Daily Mail‘s Peter Hitchens about Steven Knight’s new Great Expectations adaptation, presumably forgetting that in 2017, Knight did exactly that in 8-part Gothic Regency thriller Taboo.
Knight’s previous series starring Tom Hardy, bleeds into his take on Charles Dickens’ class and snobbery novel, which loses the comedy and grimes up the characters with the addition of adult content. Great Expectations returns to Knight’s constant theme of social mobility, moving away from ones roots, and the upper classes being mad, evil bastards, as explored in six series of Peaky Blinders.
Here’s the impressive cast amassed for this six-part drama.

Since the invention of the moving image – an event that happened just a few decades after the death of Charles Dickens – there have been at least 18 prominent adaptations of Great Expectations. That’s Pip upon Pip, Magwitch upon Magwitch, Miss Havisham upon Miss Havisham. Everyone, from Alec Guinness and Joan Hickson to Robert de Niro and Ralph Fiennes, has been sucked into the Dickens industrial complex. And now, for no discernible reason, BBC One viewers are being treated to a new adaptation of the novel, this time scripted by Peaky Blinders supremo Steven Knight.
The show follows the adventures of Pip, a bright young orphan (“an orchid growing wild in the filth of a stable”) who is thrust into the orbit of Miss Havisham (Olivia Colman) and her ward Estella (Chloe Lea/Shalom Brune-Franklin). From there, and via an encounter with a mysterious convict, Pip will fall in love, make his fortune,...
