Thomas was born in Zurich, Switzerland. He is a Swiss-French cinematographer with an international reputation. Since 1994 he works as a cinematographer mostly in France and internationally, in dramas and in commercials. He speaks French, German, and English, and has Swiss and French Citizenship. He won in 2014 the French Cesar's Award for Best Cinematography and at Camerimage 2014 Best 3D Feature Film Award for "The Young and Prodigious T.S.Spivet" directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. In 2015 he was again nominated for the French Cesar's Award for Best Cinematography for the movie"Yves-Saint Laurent" directed by Jalil Lespert. In 2019 "Out Stealing Horses" won at the Berlin International Film Festival a Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution. During summer 2021 he shot in France the feature of Louis Leterrier called "The Takedown" which was a huge hit on Netflix in may 2022 for a non-English speaking film. He shot also for Netflix "Big Bug" directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and "No Limit" directed by David Rosenthal. Since 2006 he's a member of AFC (French Society of Cinematographers). Since 2011 he's a member of the French Cesar's Academy and since 2014 of the EFA (European Film Academy). In 2014 he was member of the jury "Director's Debut" at Camerimage International Filmfestival. Hardmeier is represented worldwide by Melting Pot Agency in Paris, France.
