A. Hameed was born in Amritsar, British India in 1924. His birth name was Sheikh Abdul Hameed. He began his film career in Pakistan with film Anjaam (1957) and had his first breakthrough super hit film song "Kya hua dil pe sitam, tum na samjho gay balam"...Sung by Zubaida Khanum and lyrics by Fayyaz Hashmi for film Raat Ke Rahi (1960). In the same year, film Saheli (1960) was released and instantly became a super hit musical film, mainly due to A.Hameed's superb music. Then came hits like Aulad (1962), Ashiana (1964),Eid Mubarak (1965), Tauba (1964), Behan Bhai (1968)...Punjabi films Punno Di Sassi (1972), Sohni Mahiwal (1976). Urdu language hit films like Yeh Aman (1971),Dosti (1971), Surraiya Bhopali (1976), Bharosa (1977), Samaaj (1974) and Awaz (1978). He composed music for more than 70 films in Pakistan. A.Hameed's father, Sheikh Muhammad Munir was a professor of music at DAV College in Amritsar and was known for his rare collection of books on music. His uncle, M. Aslam was a film actor in Bombay's film world. He invited his young nephew to come to Bombay. Enrolling at Poona Film Institute, A.Hameed was taught by famous musicians-C. Ramchandra and Ustad Muhammad Ali. From Bombay, he moved to Lahore, Pakistan in 1956. After a very successful professional film career, A. Hameed died on May 20, 1991 in Rawalpindi, Pakistan at age 66/67.
