It has been a tough few years for the sports TV newsmagazine, but Jemele Hill thinks the format is ripe for a reinvention.
The journalist and ESPN veteran is leading a new program for TNT Sports called Above The Fold, which will “delve into important stories and topics centered on the connection between sports and culture.”
Hill says that the program is a “love letter to the profession that changed my life,” with its title a reference to the most important stories to be featured in a daily newspaper.
“As somebody who has now been in this business for almost three decades as a professional, it’s certainly hard not to notice that a lot of the shows, such as Outside The Lines, and E60, those hard hitting, deep dive, long-form type shows almost went extinct,” Hill tells The Hollywood Reporter in an interview. “What I love about being a...

David Scott is putting murderers behind some of the country’s most shocking crimes in the hot seat on Interview With a Killer. Court TV provided details (including a first-look teaser below) of the new limited true-crime series exclusively to TV Insider. Each episode sees Scott, former ABC News investigative reporter and Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, host these jailhouse interviews to find out what went through their mind to commit the unthinkable. “We have murders for hire, crimes of passion, serial killers, and crimes of opportunity,” Scott said. “We are opening a window of this ultimate betrayal of humanity in murder from a number of different perspectives…I believe viewers will find this fascinating as we face homicide in contemporary America.” Among those interviewed include Denali Brehmer, Yaser Said, Brian Steven Smith, Tyler Hadley, and Bo Pete Jeffrey. Brehmer was sentenced to 99 years in prison in February for her...

Wayne Brady’s single appearance on Chappelle’s Show brought him a different kind of credibility than a decade’s worth of Whose Line Is It Anyway? ever could. But he hated how he ended up on the show in the first place. It was all a reaction to a sketch in which Paul Mooney played a character who delivered this devastating line: “White people love Wayne Brady because he makes Bryant Gumbel look like Malcolm X.”
Up until that point, Brady had been a big fan of Chappelle’s Show. “I was sitting down, getting a haircut, and it came on the TV,” he remembered on A&e’s Right to Offend. “Like, what the hell? What did I do?”
The joke “absolutely offended me,” Brady told IndieWire. “To a degree, it still offends me every time I see some white kid post that on Twitter as a way to get my attention.

The Story: A goofball gym teacher (Mark Harmon) is forced to teach a remedial English class over the summer.
The Players: Starring: Mark Harmon, Kirstie Alley, Dean Cameron, Courtney Thorne-Smith & Shawnee Smith. Music by Danny Elfman. Directed by Carl Reiner.
The History: Hollywood spent a couple of years trying to make Mark Harmon happen as a movie star. Fresh off an arc on “St. Elsewhere” which infamously had his character contract AIDS from a one-night stand, his career was red hot. For a while, he was seriously considered to replace Don Johnson on “Miami Vice” after contract negotiations fell through, and in 1987-88, we got a bunch of starring vehicles that would try him out in a variety of genres to see if one would stick. He did action in The Presidio (even doing his own stunts – although the film was stolen by co-star Sean Connery), drama in Stealing Home,...

The 67-year-old former anchor made an appearance on Bill Maher‘s Club Random podcast, and addressed his “sexist” attitude.
“He got mad at me because I was doing something on maternity leave and he was giving me endless s–t for taking a month or two off,” she revealed.
“I was having my first baby, and he was like, ‘Why don’t you just drop it in the field and come back?’ or something like that. He was kidding, but he was goofing on me and giving me a lot of s—t and it was emblematic of a sort of, incredibly sexist attitude.”
Keep reading to find out more…
While she called him a “seamless” and “eloquent” broadcasting talent, she also called Bryant a “prickly” person and a definite “guy’s guy.

Veteran journalist Katie Couric has been opening up about her career, especially her time working with Bryant Gumbel as co-host of NBC’s Today show in the 1990s. Speaking on Sunday’s episode (April 14) of Bill Maher‘s Club Random podcast, Couric recalled Gumbel’s “incredibly sexist attitude” regarding her maternity leave from the long-running morning show in 1991. “He got mad at me because I was doing something on maternity leave,” Couric told Maher, per Deadline. “And he was giving me endless s*** for taking like a month or two off. I was having my first baby.” She continued, “He was like, ‘Why don’t you just drop it in the field and come back to work right away or something?’ It was really…” The former 60 Minutes correspondent noted that Gumbel was kidding but that his jokes represented a wider issue of the culture. “No, he was kidding,” she shared.

Katie Couric said that her first maternity leave from NBC’s Today show in 1991 was met with an “incredibly sexist attitude” from co-anchor Bryant Gumbel.

Frank Herbert’s Dune made Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi project possible, which gained universal acclaim. As the director has already released the second of a two-part adaptation of the former’s 1965 novel, the movie series takes an interesting turn with Villeneuve’s confirmation of working on the screenplay of the next movie based on Dune: Messiah novel.

Born without legs in October 1987 and immediately abandoned at the hospital by her biological parents, Jen Bricker was adopted by a small-town Illinois couple — who already had three boys — and raised to believe she could do anything she put her mind to. Her parents, Gerald and Sharon, gently encouraged their daughter to remove the word “can’t” from her vocabulary, and so Bricker never thought twice about playing with or competing against the other kids at her school.
She excelled across a variety of different sports, but her greatest passion was reserved for gymnastics. Obsessed from the moment she first saw future gold medalist Dominique Moceanu perform one of her floor routines on TV, Bricker devoted herself to becoming a brilliant power tumbler, and when she was 11 she placed fourth in the Aau Junior Olympic Games despite being the only disabled athlete in competition.

Across 29 seasons and more than 300 episodes, Gumbel has broken some of the biggest stories in sports: exposing a child slavery ring, investigating the International Olympic Committee and revealing that Shaquille O’Neal made more money per year from endorsements than from the NBA. “Since Day 1 at Real Sports, we’ve consistently tried to look beyond the scoreboard and focus instead on the many societal issues inherent in the world of sports,” Gumbel says. “We’ve had the opportunity to tell complex stories about race, gender, class, opportunity, and so much more. Sometimes, the antagonism you see between two characters in a movie isn't acting. Bette Davis and Joan Crawford in "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane" is one of the most infamous examples thereof; their feud has inspired books, podcasts, and even a mini-series.
In the film (directed by Robert Aldrich), they play the Hudson sisters, Jane (Davis) and Blanche (Crawford). The limelight has moved past them both; Jane was a child star whose talents didn't last to adulthood while Blanche had a film career before being paralyzed in a car crash. The limelight has moved past them both; Jane was a child star whose talents didn't last to adulthood while Blanche had a film career before being paralyzed in a car crash. Jane has to dote on the incapacitated Blanche, only furthering the resentment. There's a clear meta-textual undercurrent; Davis and Crawford were not considered "bankable" as women in their fifties, and there's no industry as hostile to middle-aged women as Hollywood.

Updated with game-day versions, additional commercials. Super Sunday brought Madison Avenue’s annual spending spree, which has boosted the Big Game’s Hollywood quotient noticeably in recent years.
Celebrity product pitches date back to the days of leather helmets, of course, but in the increasingly rare air of the Super Bowl they have started to overtake the left-field breakouts of the past by the likes of Puppy Monkey Baby or beer-loving frogs. With Fox’s telecast commanding a peak level of more than 7 million for 30-second spots, producers and brands again are banking on stars in a big way. Super Bowl Lvii, a contest in Arizona between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, will feature commercials starring Bradley Cooper, Adam Driver, Melissa McCarthy, Anna Faris, Ben Stiller, Brie Larson, Steve Martin, Maya Rudolph and Miles and Keleigh Teller. Streaming services — a burgeoning category — will feature plugs by Will Ferrell,...

ESPN has canceled the linear edition of its journalism-driven news program Outside the Lines.
While the weekly TV series is sunsetting, the Saturday morning news program will continue on as a digital series (including on ESPN’s YouTube channel), and with branded segments on ESPN’s flagship studio show SportsCenter seven days per week. Jeremy Schaap, the anchor of Otl since 2020, will continue to lead the segments.
Sports Business Journal‘s John Ourand first reported the news. No jobs are expected to be lost with the change.
Launched in 1990 as a monthly program, Otl eventually shifted to a daily format. In 2020 the program returned to a weekly cadence on Saturday mornings during the NFL offseason. Anchored by Bob Ley from its inception until his retirement in 2019, the program was known for its tough reporting on issues like the NFL’s concussion crisis, and the USA gymnastics sex abuse scandal.
