In March 2001, his partner Catherine Shipton gave birth to daughter Tallulah.

He has two daughters from his 18-year relationship with actress Lesley Dunlop - Daisy Dunlop (b. 1977) and Rosie (b. 1981).

He is the older brother of Dominic Guard and Candy Guard. He is the cousin of actress Pippa Guard, son-in-law of Pat Dunlop, father of Daisy Dunlop and Rosy Guard, uncle of William Guard and Bea Guard, brother-in-law of Sharon Duce and son of Philip Guard and Charlotte Mitchell.

Had his own rock band in which he sang and played a 12 string guitar with a number record companies interested in recording him. He'd started playing the piano when four against his will then about 13 took up the guitar and soon afterwards started writing songs.

He says that he has always written songs and had the yearning to do something with the material but acting has to take priority as its his living but whenever he gets the opportunity he goes back to music.
