He was a dance-band pianist in the orchestras of George Hall and Benny Goodman, and harpsichordist in Artie Shaw's Gramercy Five in 1940 and 1941. In 1947 he formed his first group, and was the music director of the First Army on Governors Island in New York, also composing music for and performing in recruiting shows in 1950.
