Roman Gromadskiy(1940-2021)

Roman Borisovich Gromadsky was born on December 18, 1940, in Leningrad,
USSR (now St. Petersburg, Russia). From 1941-1943 he and his mother
survived the siege of Leningrad during the Nazi occupation in the
Second World War. After the war, Gromadsky lived on the Nevsky Prospect
in Leningrad and was an active member of student drama club at his
school. From 1958-1961 he served in the Red Army in East Germany and
witnessed the rise of the Berlin Wall.
From 1962-1966 he studied acting with professor T. Soynikova at the Leningrad Institute of Theatre, Music, and Cinematography. In 1966 he made his film debut in 'Sneg sredi leta' (Kazakhfilm). From 1966, Gromadsky has been a permanent member of the troupe at Lenkom Theatre (now Theatre Baltiysky Dom) in St. Petersburg. From 1987-1990 he also worked with the Theatre of Lensoveta in Leningrad (St. Petersburg). His stage partners were such actors as Alisa Freyndlikh, Era Ziganshina, Tatyana Piletskaya, Alla Balter, Regina Lialeikite, Natalya Popova, Yulian Panich, Vadim Yakovlev, Emmanuil Vitorgan, Aleksandr Slastin, Vladimir Tykke, Petr Shelokhonov, and other notable Russian actors.
Roman Gromadsky was designated People's Artist of Russia. He was awarded the Stanislavsky State Prize of Russia for the leading role in film 'Strogaya muzhskaya zhizn (1980)'. During the 1990s Gromadsky was elected representative to the Leningrad (St. Petersburg) City Council. He is a professor at School of Acting and Directing at St. Petersburg Humanitarian University.
