Iceland’s Stockfish Film Festival has announced a new prize, the Eva Maria Daniels Award for Vital Filmmaking, which honors the legacy of the Icelandic filmmaker who died last year. With the support of Daniels’ partner Moritz Diller and son Henry, the festival will honor one standout producer or director in the shorts categories will receive the inaugural award commemorating her achievements and continued contributions to Iceland’s next wave of filmmakers. The world premiere of Jeanne du Barry, directed by Maïwenn and starring Johnny Depp, will open the 2023 Cannes Film Festival on May 16.

The festival didn’t specify whether the film will bow in or out of Competition.

Jeanne du Barry will be released the same day in French theatres via Le Pacte. The costume drama was produced by Pascal Caucheteux and Gregoire Sorlat’s Why Not Productions.

Johnny Depp’s comeback movie Jeanne Du Barry is to open the Cannes Film Festival.

Directed by Maïwenn, who also stars, the film’s world premiere will take place on Tuesday, May 16 and the film will be released in cinemas the same day in France, the festival said Wednesday.

Maïwenn herself plays the eponymous main character alongside Depp, Benjamin Lavernhe, Melvil Poupaud, Pierre Richard, Pascal Greggory and India Hair. The film will recount the life, rise and fall of French King Louis Xv‘s court favorite, Jeanne Vaubernier.

The French-language film’s official synopsis describes Vaubernier as “a young working-class woman hungry for culture and pleasure, who uses her intelligence and allure to climb the rungs of the social ladder one by one. She becomes the favourite of King Louis Xv who, unaware of her status as courtesan, regains through her his appetite for life. They fall madly in love.

Screen’s team looks at which titles are lining up for a potential slot in either Official Selection or one of the parallel sections.

Speculation is mounting about which titles could make the line-up for the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, which runs May 16-27 this year.

The submission process for Official Selection officially closes on March 21, ahead of the traditional Paris press conference in mid-April (the date is currently to be confirmed).

The past year was a big one for autobiographical filmmaking, with James Gray’s childhood heartbreak in “Armageddon Time,” Sam Mendes’ ode to moviegoing in the UK with “Empire of Light,” Alejandro G. Iñarritu’s dreamlike self-reflexive filmmaker odyssey “Bardo,” and, of course, Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans,” which turned the world’s most successful director into an Oscar frontrunner for his most personal movie. The others came up short in their own campaigns, but the best autobiographical movie of the past year was one the awards season never fully embraced.

Mia Hansen-Løve’s “One Fine Morning” is only the latest sensitive and personal project from the French auteur to build its drama from her own life. Among the recent movies that fall into that trend, it provides the strongest example of a filmmaker attuned to the challenges of drawing from her own story, as Hansen-Løve has done for years.

The Red Sea International Film Festival has announced its foundation is getting behind French director Maïwenn’s period drama Jeanne du Barry, in which she co-stars as the titular 18th Century courtesan Madame du Barry opposite Johnny Depp as King Louis Xv.

A first image of Maïwenn in character alongside Depp as Louis Xv has also been unveiled internationally having been splashed in the French press earlier in January. Images of Depp in character were first teased in the summer.

Featuring one of a handful of great performances Léa Seydoux gave in 2022 releases, Mia Hansen-Løve’s tender drama One Fine Morning is one of the major films of the year. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to see it in this calendar year as it will only be having a NY qualifying run starting next week, but thankfully its proper release is right around the corner beginning January 27. Ahead of the run, Sony Classics has now released the first. U.S. trailer for the drama also starring Pascal Greggory, Melvil Poupaud, Nicole Garcoa, and Camille Leban.

Rory O’Connor said in his review, “One year on from Bergman Island, her only title yet to have competed for the Palme d’Or, Hansen-Løve returned to Cannes this week in the more low-key surroundings of Directors’ Fortnight––it is indeed a more low-key film, and frankly a better one for it.

For France’s premiere film and television trade industry publication, it wasn’t a good look.

The cover photo of the Sept. 30 issue of Le Film Français, a must-read for Gallic filmmakers, featured seven men — Pathé President Jérome Seydoux, surrounded by actors Vincent Cassel, Pierre Niney, François Civil and Pio Marmaï, and actor-directors Guillaume Canet and Danny Boon —under the headline “Objective: Reconquest.”

The backlash was immediate.

“No women, no diversity. Classy!” tweeted French actress Alexandra Lamy (You Choose!). Audrey Diwan, director of Venice Film Festival winner Happening, added ironically, “If we’re bothering you guys, just let us know.”

The magazine quickly apologized, but for many, the incident was illustrative of how far the French industry still has to go.
