Directed by Jonathan Zuck, who also wrote the screenplay with Joe Leone and Jenna St. John, Meant to Be Broken has the following synopsis: Harvey has led a cautious and conscientious life until he gets fired and finds out he has one month to live. Throwing caution to the wind, he meets Luke at a bar and confesses he’s never broken any rules. Luke responds “Do you want to?,” and so the quest begins.

“Mother’s Day” directed by the legendary Garry Marshall features a star-studded ensemble cast in a holiday-themed film that (hopefully) completes the trilogy of star-studded ensemble cast in a holiday-themed film that includes “Valentine’s Day” and “New Year’s Eve” directed by Marshall. With that said, fans of either movie will probably enjoy “Mother’s Day,” which follows a group of mothers, and one dad, in separate story lines that eventually merge (more or less) after crisscrossing, a few near misses and a lot of coincidences. It’s a format that can work exceedingly well and is popular because audiences can see many of their favorite stars in the same movie.

Today, the cult horror comedy April Fool’s Day celebrates its 30th anniversary. Written by Danilo Bach (Beverly Hills Cop) and directed by Fred Walton (1979’s When A Stranger Calls), the film follows a group of college students who spend spring break at their friend Muffy St. John’s family estate, unaware that the weekend will be filled with frights and unexpected surprises.

Released the same weekend as The Money Pit, April Fool’s Day became a modest success for Paramount Pictures, taking in $13 million during its three-week theatrical run and finding even more of an audience once it was released on VHS. Even though it has largely flown under the radar over the last 30 years, Walton’s slasher send-up with an Agatha Christie flair has remained a beloved cult film among genre fans and this writer in particular.

With BBC2 making a big success of screening Buffy The Vampire Slayer on British terrestrial TV in the late 1990s and early Noughties, Channel 4 promptly snapped up the rights for its spin-off show, Angel. Friday teatimes would now be enlivened by the antics of Angel and his newly assembled Fang Gang, fighting the good fight in La.

There was one little problem, though. While Buffy was generally geared towards a family audience (and even then, notable cuts for violence, language and sexual references were made on a frequent basis to meet watershed rules), Angel wasn't so much. The spin-off show was, by and large, tailor made for a more grown-up audience, with its uncompromising violence and darker, adult themes. So poor old C4 had initially made a meal of the supposedly vaunted 6pm TV slot. Some of the stuff wasn't really geared towards the youngsters who might have tuned in out of curiosity,...

Ted Buchanan, on the face of it, is a multi-tasking genius. He's a master at selling computer software, out-performing his colleagues at work. “Nobody beats The Machine,” frowns downcast walrus-moustached colleague Neal. “Guy's a genius.” He's a whizz at mini golf. He's also a dab hand in the kitchen, conjuring all sorts of culinary treats such as buns, cookies and mini pizzas. Rupert Giles. Champion of the piping hot, meaty drink and tweed suits. The archetypal Brit abroad, complete with Hugh Grant-esque clucking when embarrassed and a confused frown at American colloquialisms.

Even his friends are queuing up to poke the fun, on today of all days. Buffy scoffs that he wore tweed diapers (that's nappies to the Brits); Xander is reeling from the horror of mentioning Giles and orgies in the same sentence; even Giles' beau, Jenny calls him a fuddy duddy. Such a rock solid square clearly isn't capable of harbouring a dark past.

You would have thought so, anyway, but as it turns out, Giles is no stranger to the dark side. His shady history has happened to have caught up with him in a big way in the latest episode called The Dark Age. You know how some people just turn out to be unwanted acquaintances rather than friends?...

Being on top of a Hellmouth leaves zero leeway for peace. The most innocent things can become causes for concern. A starling could be affected by Hellmouth energy, turning into a flesh-eating, 20-foot big bird. A leftover cheese sandwich tossed to the ground could spawn demon fondue, oozing through every drain and tap in Sunnydale. Even the simple act of dreaming is not sacred any more, given that a coma-induced kid has somehow brought the nightmare world kicking and screaming into a slowly fading reality.

Take Laura, the hapless victim of what's known as the “Ugly Man”. It's difficult to relate to her admittedly brutal plight of being beaten black and blue just for taking a crafty puff on a cigarette – mainly because we've never encountered the character before. She's just dumped in the middle of this strange blurry world of reality and dreams, and then she's quickly forgotten about...

Years ago, before the days of scrolling through 1093 movie channels on a small telly box, folks could enjoy the experience of going to the cinema. A particular favourite of sci-fi fans in the good old days was what was known as the B Movie. Normally, a sci-fi B Movie would consist of a hokey plot, squeaky over-acting and a cardboard monster. Despite this less than formidable reputation, the B Movie still brought the punters back for more. Less choice means that you take what you can get, and in the days before DVDs and Digiboxes were on tap, the B Movie was about the best that you could have.

I guess that's what the Buffy production team were aiming to pay homage to when it came to creating Teacher's Pet, the latest wacky escapade of Season One. Vampires? Bah! Witches? Pah! When you're on a Hellmouth, even a Preying Mantis...

ABC‘s slate of new shows for fall has a strange flavor to it, and it’s going to be a bumpy ride. The network has about as many new shows as returning ones (if you count all the midseasons), and a good percentage of the returning offerings are a year old or less, making this look a bit like a rebuilding year.

Not only is it a rebuilding year, but it’s the year of bringing back every actor and actress who ever had a decent run on a show before. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a network’s new season slate that was so crammed with people returning from something else. If you can’t make it good, I suppose, make sure viewers recognize the faces.
