Like Doug Liman’s recent Amazon remake of Road House, his latest streaming effort The Instigators quite frankly misses its calling. Both films should have had wide theatrical runs before hitting the services. They are the kinds of films that are fun to watch with a crowd.

Nevertheless, other than a nominal week in limited release, The Instigators will hit Apple TV+’s home audience on August 9. Still, I have to say Apple has turned out a number of streaming attractions that are a cut above, and this is yet another example. With a grade-a cast led by Matt Damon (who is also a producer with partner Ben Affleck) and Casey Affleck (who co-wrote the script with Chuck MacLean), this is pure, often riotously funny summer entertainment, a perfect blend of genres from action to comedy to crime, not a minute of it to be taken seriously.

Skarsgård leads Robert Eggers’ highly-anticipated vampire horror film “Nosferatu,” with “The Crow” actor playing the sinister Count Orlok. Eggers writes and directs the reimagining of F. W. Murnau’s 1922 film, which was later remade by Werner Herzog in 1979.

CinemaCon attendees Wednesday got a first look at Focus Features’ second film with Robert Eggers, Nosferatu, a dark and gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her which causes untold horror in its wake.

Introducing the footage, Focus chairman Peter Kujawski said, “This ain’t your father’s Nosferatu” and promised it will give “new meaning to the term Christmas feast when we open on December 25.”

In the footage, we see the terror and hysteria rampant in the village as various townsfolk shriek, “He is coming” after the young woman calls to him seemingly in a nighttime trance. “My dreams grow darker,” she says, and asks Willem Dafoe’s Professor Von Franz, “Does evil come from within us, or from beyond?”

Bill Skarsgård has become undead bloodsucker Count Orlok for the big screen.

Skarsgård leads Robert Eggers’ long-awaited “Nosferatu,” a reimagining of F. W. Murnau’s 1922 film. Skarsgård plays the titular villain, with Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hutter, the source of Orlok’s obsession. As Orlok tries to seduce her soul, Ellen’s husband Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult) fights to save his wife from turning to the dark side.

Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski said the film “definitely ain’t your father’s ‘Nosferatu,’ and [Eggers] will definitely bring new meaning to the phrase ‘Christmas feast.’”

The footage Focus premiered at CinemaCon (though not released online today) was as daring and intense as any film Eggers has made, complete with some chilling black and white sequences, a man biting the head off a pigeon, streets teeming with rats, and rooms engulfed in flames, not to mention a truly deafening, bone chilling score.

Willem Dafoe is no stranger to the world of Nosferatu, as he famously played original Nosferatu actor Max Schreck in the 2000 movie Shadow of the Vampire. Dafoe returns to that arena in the upcoming Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman) remake of Nosferatu, only this time around he’s playing a human who’s hunting the vampire.

Entertainment Weekly has shared a new image from Nosferatu this morning, giving us our first look at Willem Dafoe’s character in the film, Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz.

Eggers describes the character as “a crazy vampire hunter.”

Exclusive: Sony Pictures Entertainment in a competitive situation has won the theatrical distribution deals for two mega Apple Original Films movies –the George Clooney and Brad Pitt feature Wolfs and the Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum title Project Artemis.

The news comes on the heels of Apple Original Films’ Ridley Scott-directed Napoleon rolling toward $200M worldwide via its distribution pact with Sony.

Both movies, developed and produced by Apple Original Films, will receive a global theatrical window before streaming worldwide on AppleTV+. Napoleon opened on Nov. 22 and has a 45-day theatrical window. While no theatrical release date has been set for Wolfs and Project Artemis, it would not be shocking if both land 2024 spots in an exhibition marketplace that’s starving for project.

Focus Features is hoping Nosferatu will take a bite out of the 2024 Christmas Day box office. The studio has confirmed the horror film will open in theaters on December 25, 2024 for all those who prefer their winter holiday to be accompanied by something a little dark and fangy.

The cast of Nosferatu includes Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, Nicholas Hoult as Thomas Hutter, Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hutter, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Friedrich Harding. A week ago, the folks at Empire Magazine shared the first image from The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here), a project that was first announced eight years ago. That image featured Lily-Rose Depp (Yoga Hosers) and the (shadow of the) hand of the vampire Count Orlok, played in this film by Bill Skarsgard (It). The latest print edition of Empire included another image from Nosferatu, one that features Nicholas Hoult (Renfield) and gives another hint of Orlok. That image can now be seen at the bottom of this article, thanks to the folks at Collider.

Festival First For Darren Dale

Producer and screenwriter, Darren Dale has been named as the new board chair of the Sydney Film Festival, following the retirement of Dianne Weir. He is a leading advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander content and has been director of Blackfella Films since 2000. He has been involved with films including “The Dark Emu Story,” “Mabo” and TV’s “Redfern Now.” He is also a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and has held board roles at Acmi, Sydney Film Festival, Screen Nsw and the Australian Film Television and Radio School.

“As the first Indigenous and industry practitioner to chair the Sydney Film Festival, Darren Dale’s appointment marks a significant and positive shift for the festival. With an impressive track record in storytelling spanning two decades, he brings valuable experience to lead this cultural organization,” said federal Minister for Arts John Graham.

The latest film from The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers is a remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here), a project that was first announced eight years ago. The state government of Australia’s New South Wales has reversed some of its recently announced plans to cut subsidy to the film and TV industries.

Nsw Minister for the Arts, John Graham said on Tuesday that three important screen industry programs – the post digital and visual effects (Pdv), the digital games development rebate program and the ‘Made in Nsw Fund’ – will continue on existing terms for eligible projects.

His statement followed some two weeks of lobbying by screen industry workers, guilds and companies which argued that the government’s proposed budget cuts would damage a large and growing industry. New South Wales, which includes Sydney, is the biggest hub for the film, TV and post-production sectors in Australia.

The funding cuts, worth about A$60 million ($40 million), were made by the previous government prior to the state election in March, and that they were included in this month’s budget.

Plans to ax several screen funding programs in Australia are “hard to comprehend” and will be a “disaster” for the country’s film and TV industry, the country’s producers body has warned.

The New South Wales government, which presides over Sydney and its surrounding areas, is planning to cut a number of existing programs, including the Made in Nsw Fund.

The program funds domestic high-end TV and features and has been credited attracting overseas investment into local productions. The likes of local drama Mystery Road, Mad Max 2: Furiosa, Mother and Son, Disney+’s The Artful Dodger and Thor: Love and Thunder have benefitted from the fund, which Screen Producers Australia says created “jobs and multiples of economic activity in in Sydney and regional areas of the state.”
