"The Love Boat" holds a fascinating place in pop culture history. While most of the shows with reruns playing in heavy rotation today were in some way groundbreaking upon their initial release, "The Love Boat" is a novelty the likes of which modern TV rarely – if ever – tries to emulate. An anthology-like rom-com set aboard a cruise ship, "The Love Boat" featured a revolving door of guest stars and little connective tissue to speak of aside from the cast playing the crew aboard the ship.

For one full decade of 1977 to 1987, ABC could count on its comedy/drama series “The Love Boat” to bring in millions of audience members on Saturday nights. The show would have multiple story arcs (often three for a one-hour episode) with five to 10 celebrity guest stars each time. Some arcs were playing out for laughs, others for romance and the remainder could take on tough issues. The show airs daily on the Decades network and on Sunday afternoons for Me-tv. If you were any kind of celebrity in the late 1970s and early 1980s, chances are you booked a one-episode trip on "The Love Boat" at some point. It's also possible you boarded "de plane" to "Fantasy Island." These two ABC shows were the backbone of ABC's losers-and-old-farts-stuck-at-home-on-a-Saturday-night line-up, and scored impressive ratings throughout the majority of their runs based primarily on their constantly revolving carousel of guest stars. Week to week, you never knew which washed-up actor, up-and-coming ingenue, or reasonably telegenic pro athlete was going to show up.
Basically, if you weren't getting badgered by these series' casting directors for a guest appearance, you needed to either fire your agent or quit the business altogether. That said, if you relented and made an appearance on either program, you might've required a career intervention. "The Love Boat" and "Fantasy Island" had everything to gain from landing biggish names, while...

“The Love Boat” soon will be making another run, promising something for everyone — but this time as a reality dating series.
CBS and its sister Australian broadcaster Network 10 have both ordered local versions of “The Real Love Boat,” set to air in the U.S. and Australia later this year. The show is exactly what it sounds like: A reality dating competition show, but patterned after the hit 1970s hour-long comedy “The Love Boat.”
And just as Princess Cruises served as the backdrop to the scripted series, the cruise line’s ships will also serve as a setting for the new unscripted shows.
“The Love Boat” was produced by Aaron Spelling, whose company was later purchased by Viacom — eventually leading to the “Love Boat” IP being owned by CBS Studios. CBS and Network 10 are now Paramount Global brands.

Everyone's back on deck! The cast of The Love Boat had a reunion on Friday, May 10, to receive their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in partnership with Princess Cruises — and it was so good to see them all back together 40 years since the show first aired. The hit series ran from 1977 until 1986, and in our opinion, it very much deserves this prestigious acknowledgment. For the special get-together in La — which aired on Today — some of the show's most memorable faces including Gavin McLeod, Ted Lange, Bernie Kopell, Cynthia Lauren Tewes, Jill Whelan, and Fred Grandy dressed the part in their black and navy blue pantsuits. The best part? Gavin even sported his signature Capt. Merril Stubing captain's hat! Screen Syndicate, a side project of Southern Illinois-based Americana band Stace England and the Salt Kings, explores the fascinating history of Roger Corman’s New World Pictures and the exploitation films made by the company in the 1970s. The life of actress Roberta Collins — a Hollywood story of sadly unfulfilled promise — is the vehicle used to navigate the period. Collins lit up the screen in films like The Big Doll House, Women In Cages and Death Race 2000. But Collins was unable to break out of the B-movie grind, playing minor roles in increasingly poor productions before finally exiting the business. She died in obscurity in 2008. Screen Syndicate combines original songs, film clips, trailers, and other material into a unique live-music experience that pays tribute to Collins. The band has performed at numerous film festivals in the U.S. and Europe — appearing twice at Sliff — with shows about pioneering African-American filmmaker Oscar Micheaux and Cairo,...

A lot of people ask me, "Creepy, how did you first come to love horror movies so much?" Well, growing up in the Seventies, there was plenty to go around. There were TV classics like Gargoyles, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, and any number of TV Movies of the Week, and there was also...
There was also a ton of weird and quirky bits of monster-themed kids programming. Usually "The Munsters" and "The Land of the Lost" get all the love, and rightly so. They're absolute classics. That being said, we're gonna talk about some other things here. Things you may not have known even existed. For instance, were you aware that way before Venkmen, Spengler, Stantz and Zeddmore there was a whole other set of Ghostbusters? How about a different Monster Squad? Got your attention? Good. Sit back, relax, and get ready to soak up some lunacy as we revisit.

Let’s play a little word association. Monster Squad. What comes to mind? You either start thinking of the first virgin you can you think of or you scream Wolfman’s Got Nards! Yeah, that’s The Monster Squad; The Fred Dekker classic about kids versus the regrouped Universal monsters. The Monster Squad is a brilliant movie that is one of the absolute best way to get kiddies into the creepies. Monster Squad on the other hand is something wholly different although with similar effect.
Monster Squad takes Herman Hoffman whose resume precedes him as a Director of early television shaping the way we view stories on the boobtube and combines his efforts with James Sheldon, also television royalty and director quite a few spooky classics including a pile of episodes of the Twilight Zone. While both men come from extensive television directorial backgrounds, I think it’s important to...

In honor of Election Day, we are casting our votes for the best pop culture politicians of all time (based solely on kitsch-factor, not on any political views). From a WWF wrestler to a late night comic, actors turned elected officials have become quiet commonplace since Ronnie blazed the trail back in the '60s.
Who is your favorite Pop Culture Politician and who would you like to see run for office next?
10. Ronald Reagan
Ronnie is the granddaddy of actors turned elected officials. The Gipper became Governor of California in 1967 and President of the U.S. in 1981, paving the way for pop culture politicians for decades to come.
9. Arnold Schwarzenegger
The Governator is serving out the end of his second term as the head of the state of California. And since his Austrian origination prevents him from running for President, it looks like it's back to Hollywood for Arnie.

The 8th Annual TV Land Awards, hosted by Tim Allen, were filled with cast reunions, people confessing what they did when they were on The Love Boat (Billy Crystal: "I kissed Nancy Kulp, who was on The Beverly Hillbillies. It’s true"), and wonderfully absurd moments such as Charo gyrating behind a seated Brad Garrett as Blondie, recipient of the Icon award, performed "One Way or Another" live. Members of the cast of Glee were on hand to accept their Future Classic award shortly after the cast of Bosom Buddies celebrated its 30th anniversary. (Cue Jane Lynch who said,...

"Come aboard... We're expecting you..." For nine seasons, The Love Boat was a welcome escape for TV viewers and a staple of ABC's Saturday night schedule.
The show went off the air in 1986, but members of the cast reunited for a series of TV movies, including 1990's The Love Boat: A Valentine Voyage. In 1998, as part of the short-lived The Love Boat: The Next Wave series, members of the cast reboarded the Pacific Princess for a journey down memory lane.
Now, the cast is set to reunite for the upcoming TV Land Awards. Scheduled to appear are Gavin MacLeod, Fred Grandy, Bernie Kopell, Ted Lange, Ted McGinley, Lauren Tewes, and Jill Whelan. Frequent guest star Charo will also take part. The cast will be presented with the Fan Favorite Award.

Cam and Mitchell are perfect, picturing Shameless, Ryan Kwanten is shamefully clothed, and Green Day is nervous.
I demand an explanation from the British readers for Rowan Atkinson: Why is this man being allowed to make movies? Is he supposed to be funny? And in this day and age of sequels, prequels and reimagining, can the U.K. justify a market for Johnny English 2?
The Rapid City Police Department who caused the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell discharge of Air Force Sergeant Jene Newsome after seeing her wedding certificate through a window, has decided to “tighten” policies about cooperation with military authorities. You think?
If you heard a high-pitched squeal this morning, that was snicks reading that the TV Land Awards will feature an onstage reunion of The Love Boat. Scheduled to appear to receive the Fan Favorite Award are Gavin MacLeod (Captain Stubing), former U.S. Rep.

Before there was the Fred Dekker Monster Squad movie that took forever to come to DVD there was the short-lived 1970's Saturday morning live action "Monster Squad" that most of you reading have probably never even heard of. Having also taken forever, it too is finally coming to DVD this June.
Airing as part of NBC's 1976-1977 Saturday morning line-up, "The Monster Squad" starred Fred Grandy (who would go on to best be known as Gopher on "The Love Boat" before embarking on a career in politics) as a criminology college student working as a nightwatchman in a wax museum with statues of Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, and Bruce W. Wolf. The crime computer he built somehow brings the monsters to life. Mucho wacky antics ensue as they band together to fight evildoers "The Monster Squad" before the monsters have to get back on their pedestals before the museum opens.
