- Was the original "Miss Mona" on Broadway in "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas", in a production co-directed by her husband Peter Masterson and dancer Tommy Tune. Carlin won the Tony and Theatre World awards, in addition to London's Laurence Olivier Award.
- Known for her assorted Southern belles, she played Lady Bird Johnson in the TV mini-series A Woman Named Jackie (1991). She also played "First Lady" opposite George C. Scott in the failed series Mr. President (1987).
