- Studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, until lack of funds forced him to quit.

- He and his wife Anne Stallybrass had a cottage which they called Onedin House, in Dartmouth, Devon. It was used as a filming location in The Onedin Line (1971).

- Theatre work include West End performances in 'Valmouth', and 'Love Doctor'.
- One of his favourite roles was MacHeath in 'The Beggars Opera'.
