One of the great figures in early German expressionist cinema. A master of symbolism. First worked as a journalist. By 1906 was assistant to Max Reinhardt and applied for German citizenship. Wrote screenplays from 1915, notably The Golem (1914) and Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922). As director, best known for The Student of Prague (1926) and A Daughter of Destiny (1928). Fled Germany in 1933 for the United States, where he died in obscurity.
