- Wrote the original draft of the Marlon Brando motorcycle film, Der Wilde (1953). The script fell afoul of the Breen Office censors--supposedly because it sought to explain the motorcyclists' sense of frustration instead of just portraying them as crazed, violent outlaws--and was re-written, to Brando's bitter disappointment.
- Served with the Army Signal Corps during World War II, and was involved in the making of training and motivational films under director Frank Capra.
- After being blacklisted he continued to work uncredited on scripts such as 'Bridge on the River Kwai and as such wasn't able to receive an Oscar as co screen writer.
- His son, Jonathan Foreman, was an editorial writer and senior film critic for the New York Post, before relocating to his London birthplace to work for the Daily Mail.
- The son of Russian-Jewish immigrants, he originally studied for a law degree but ended up starting his career in publicity.
- [on the failure of his friend and partner Stanley Kramer to support him during the days of the blacklist]: Stanley had been a long time becoming a liberal and he had grown to love President Roosevelt very much and he felt it was unjust that, as a liberal, he should be tarred with the Communist brush. We were very successful and he really didn't want to be guilty by association.
- There are no villains in my stuff. The heavy is always the mass or the environment, never a personal heavy.
- I've only one thing to say, really, one basic theme. I'm involved with the struggle of the individual against a society that, for one reason or another, is hostile.
- Die Brücke am Kwai (1958) - $17,000
