Former Wimbledon champion Martina Navratilova says she feels “jettisoned” by the LGBTQ community due to her stance on transgender athletes in women’s sports.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Wimbledon championships, the 67-year-old tennis icon expressed her belief that she’s “on the right side of history” despite facing criticism from LGBTQ groups.
“I’ve been speaking my mind for a long time. I’m not going to change that,” Navratilova said. The openly lesbian athlete has been a vocal opponent of trans inclusion in women’s sports, arguing that it comes at the expense of cisgender female athletes.
Navratilova argues that allowing transgender women to compete in women’s sports effectively excludes cisgender women. “Women are asked to be kind and be inclusive, yet by including transgender-identified males in women’s sports, you’re excluding women,” she stated.

Exclusive: Thomas Lennon (Reno 911!), Chelsea Frei (The Moodys), and Larry Joe Campbell (The Orville) have been set for guest star roles in the forthcoming second season of Fox’s popular workplace comedy Animal Control, starring Joel McHale.
Others set to appear in S2 guest roles, as previously announced, include Ken Jeong, Sarah Chalke, and Krystal Smith.
Premiering last February, the show created by Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg and Dan Sterling follows a group of local Animal Control workers whose lives are complicated by the fact that animals are simple, but humans are not. McHale plays Frank, an opinionated, eccentric Animal Control officer who may not have gone to college but is still the most well-read person in the room. A former cop, Frank tried to expose corruption in his department, but his efforts got him fired, which may explain why he’s so cynical and curmudgeonly. He has an almost superhuman ability to understand animals.

In the match, Swiatek opened up a 3-1 lead but Gauff pegged back a break for 3-all and kept the Pole honest on serve two games later before Swiatek pounced. But, a break to love in game 10 has given Swiatek a 6-4 advantage.
“It was tighter than last year’s final. The first set was 4-4, 30-30, and I was thi‘king ‘Wow, this is the highest quality women’s tennis match...

When you think of your typical “SNL” host, you probably imagine movie stars, television actors or music personalities. But did you know more than 30 athletes have hosted NBC’s late night sketch comedy series over the past five decades? Indeed, all of the biggest names in sports have graced Studio 8H for a night of laughs and gags, including Bill Russell, John Madden, Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan and Dwayne Johnson.
While the vast majority of hosts from the world of sports have been male, three female athletes have also entertained audiences: Chris Evert, Nancy Kerrigan and Ronda Rousey. The most recent addition to the list was Super Bowl champion Travis Kelce, who took his turn as emcee in March 2023. Scroll through our “SNL” gallery above (or click here for direct access) to see all 35 athletes who hosted “Saturday Night Live.”

The honor of hosting "Saturday Night Live" is typically reserved for actors, comedians, musicians, or - sometimes - even reality-tv stars. Every once in a while, however, an athlete will channel their best comedic skills and take a shot at performing on the beloved live program. Over the years, there have been more than 30 professional athletes who have taken the stage and hosted "SNL," including NFL legends like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, wrestling icons like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and John Cena, and NBA stars like LeBron James and Charles Barkley.
While some female athletes have taken on the hosting gig - like Chris Evert - the number is shockingly smaller than men who were at the helm. The discrepancy is hard to overlook, especially as another male athlete steps into the role of host.
The next athlete to star in the live sketch show at 30 Rock is Kansas City Chiefs...

Melbourne, Jan 18 (Ians) World No 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland has soared into the third round of the Australian Open, overcoming a pair of late-set stumbles here at Rod Laver Arena to dismiss Colombian Camila Osorio.
Swiatek closed out a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Osorio in 84 minutes to win her 12th straight second-round match at a major. The Pole star hasn’t lost before the third round of a major since the 2019 US Open.
Swiatek has now won 53 of her first 65 main-draw Grand Slam singles matches. In the Open Era, only six players had more such wins after their first 65 matches in majors: Margaret Court (61), Monica Seles (60), Chris Evert (57), Martina Hingis (56), Billie Jean King (56) and Tracy Austin (54).
Osorio’s abilities to hyperextend rallies and change the direction of the ball down the line at a moment’s notice allowed her to hang with the World No.1 in a number of close games.

New York, Sep 11 (Ians) Polish tennis star and world No. 1 Iga Swiatek added a third Grand Slam singles trophy to her cupboard, defeating Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur 6-2, 7-6 (5) to win the US Open crown for the first time on Sunday (Ist).
Following Ashleigh Barty’s surprise retirement in March this year, Swiatek was thrust into the role of No.1 at the age of 20 then, but she has since handled the pressure very well, proceeding to win 37 straight matches, including the French Open.
On Sunday at the Flushing Meadows, rather than being intimidated by the No.1 ranking, the Polish tennis ace — now 21 years old — seemed quite inspired.
“I needed to stay composed and focus on the goals,” Swiatek was quoted as saying by Wta. “It’s New York — it’s so loud, it’s so crazy. It’s really mind-blowing for me. I’m really proud I could handle it mentally.

The top movie of the year was “Top Gun” starring Tom Cruise and this year, the sequel “Top Gun: Maverick” is the top flick earning nearly 582 million in North America. “Cobra Kai,”the TV sequel to “Karate Kid,” is one of the most popular series on Netflix and several “Star Trek” series have blasted off on “Paramount+.
A handful the top ten TV series including “Cheers,” “Murder, She Wrote” and “The Golden Girls” are living on in repeats. One of the top series, “60 Minutes,” is still chugging away on CBS after 54 seasons making it the longest running primetime series on the small screen. And Michael J. Fox, who won the Emmy that year for “Family Ties,” will receive an honorary Oscar this fall.

This review of “The French” was first published on June 17, 2021, after its Metrograph.com streaming debut.
Tennis fans exhausted by two weeks of a Grand Slam competition in Paris that ended last Sunday with a thrilling new champion on the women’s side, and perhaps the cementing of Goat status on the men’s, may believe they’re ready to leave the spring’s red clay season behind for the summer grass and regulation whites at Wimbledon.
But a new reissue of a sports documentary artifact is now available to offer tennis diehards one more rewarding reminder of the enduring thrills and frustrations of battling on the terre battue, William Klein’s movie about the 1981 Roland Garros tournament, “The French.”
Klein, an American-born, French-identified photographer and filmmaker now in his 90s, had long been lauded for his street-smart, irony-laden, instinctively artistic work. His feature debut, the 1966 fashion satire “Who Are You,...

In a powerful ESPN article co-written by Chris McKendry on Jan. 14, the 18-time grand slam champion shared that she was diagnosed with stage 1C ovarian cancer and began "her first of six rounds of chemotherapy" this week. "I've lived a very charmed life. Now I have some challenges ahead of me," Chris shared. "But, I have comfort in knowing the chemotherapy is to ensure that cancer does not come back." The tennis star's health discovery follows the death of her younger sister, Jeanne Evert Dubin, who passed away from the same type of cancer in...

Tennis Hall-of-Famer and broadcaster Chris Evert revealed today that she has stage 1C ovarian cancer.
Evert, who is 67, was diagnosed last year after undergoing a preventative hysterectomy, she said. Cancer has not been detected elsewhere in her body, according to a piece she co-wrote with Chris McKendry on ESPN.com. In it, Evert also revealed she began her first of six rounds of chemotherapy this week.
“I feel very lucky they caught it early,” Evert wrote in a twitter post announcing the ESPN story, “and expect positive results from my chemo plan.”
Evert also revealed that she still plans to participate in ESPN’s coverage of the Australian Open, which begins Monday and runs through January 30. The 18-time Grand Slam singles champ won that tournament twice, in 1982 and 1984.

Channel 4-backed U.K. independent content production company Spirit Studios has teamed with James Watt, co-founder of multinational brewery BrewDog, to produce “Mission Finpossible,” a drama documentary aiming to to highlight the issues facing the world’s shark species. Humans kill over 120 million sharks a year, mainly for their fins for soup and many shark species are now under considerable risk of unrecoverable decline with some species having declined to near extinction in recent years. The shark is an apex predator and crucial to maintaining healthy ocean ecosystems.
Spirit Studios, whose previous content activism campaigns include global mental health movement #Iamwhole, will produce the documentary that will feature an original scripted element together with input from the world’s leading shark experts and archive footage. BrewDog is funding the project and will also produce an exclusive beer to raise funds for shark support groups around the world. The...

No Federer. No Nadal. No (defending champion) Thiem. And now no Serena. The New York-based U.S. Open starts on Monday, and Novak Djokovic is, once again, feeling underappreciated, especially as he goes for the Grand Slam. Assuming he doesn’t stub a toe, he should reach that goal, lack of applause — or added asterisks — be damned.
The truth is, the female competitors — even without Serena Williams in the competition — will, and should, be what draws the viewers. “It’s very exciting to have this many women with very different games, playing with power and touch,” said Joel Drucker, who has covered the tennis world for many years.
“I think the women have always had compelling stories and can definitely drive and sustain ratings,” adds Andrea Joyce, who has covered the Open on TV for decades. “It’s a reflection of the culture and times we live in. Coming off the Olympics,...

Alice (Josephine Mackerras)
It makes no sense. The night before saw Alice Ferrand’s (Emilie Piponnier) husband François (Martin Swabey) going out of his way to passionately make-out with her in front of their friends at a dinner party and now he won’t answer her calls. Despite his running out of the house earlier than usual without any explanation, however, there’s nothing to make her think something is wrong until a trip to the drugstore exposes a freeze on their finances. One credit card won’t work. Then another. The Atm won’t accept her sign-in and François still isn’t picking up his phone. Alice has no other option but to set a meeting with the bank and figure...

With this year’s French Open recently concluding, it’s the opportune time to watch one of cinema’s greatest sports documentaries. Capturing the annual tennis event 40 years ago, Muhammed Ali, the Greatest director William Klein’s The Open takes an intimate look at the 1981 French Open with John McEnroe, Chris Evert, Yannick Noah, Arthur Ashe, Martina Navratilova, and Björn Borg. Set to open virtually at Metrograph starting this Friday, we’re pleased to present the exclusive trailer.
As the official synopsis reads, “In 1981, Klein and three camera crews were given exclusive, unprecedented access to the tournament for the first time in its 90-year history, and using that doorway into locker rooms, TV studios, and players’ boxes, he shot the ultimate behind-the-scenes look at the 1981 French Open. With Klein’s customary eagle eye and whirlwind energy, The French showcases the noisy bedlam that accompanies any major sporting event, while also...
