As Doctor Who series 11 adds a trio of soap opera stars to its cast. And it makes sense...

What do Mandip Gill, Tosin Cole and Bradley Walsh have in common? Other than the fact that they're all joining Jodie Whittaker's Doctor as part of the regular cast of Doctor Who's next series, they've all acted in soap operas. Even 12 years since the show was revived by a former Coronation Street writer, that still makes some fans nervous.

Whatever your thoughts on Corrie, EastEnders and other serial dramas (to give them their proper name – the nickname comes from an outdated observation about soap companies sponsoring many of them), they're the best, most relevant training ground for young actors in British television. It's also more relevant to the experience of working on Doctor Who than you might necessarily expect.

“Look Who's the Doc's new assistant!” On Tuesday, the Mirror's front page trumpeted an exclusive reveal that Bradley Walsh would be Jodie Whittaker's companion in the new series of Doctor Who.

The one-time Sarah Jane Adventures guest star would be the first companion actor to have hosted a quiz show with the same name as a 1960s serial, but beyond trivia, the report has been fairly well received as far as we can see – Walsh is a decent actor, who's worked with incoming executive producer Chris Chibnall before on Law & Order UK, and a fun screen presence. But given the source, might it all be a load of bobbins?...

Corporation says it could lose stars to ITV, Sky, Netflix and Amazon.

The BBC has warned that the forced disclosure of star salaries will have a widespread inflationary impact on top-tier talent pay (reports Broadcast).

Director general Tony Hall said that revealing the pay for inhouse, on-screen talent earning more than £150,000 could result in the corporation losing stars to commercial rivals such as ITV, Sky, Netflix and Amazon.

Derek Thompson and Amanda Mealing are top actors on the list.

The BBC has revealed the salaries of all journalists, presenters and actors who earn £150,000 or more.

The annual report shows that Casualty and Holby City stars are the highest paid actors at the corporation, with Derek Thompson, who plays Charlie Fairhead in Casualty, the best paid, earning £350,000 to £399,999 in 2016.

Second is Holby City star Amanda Mealing, who was paid £250,000 to £299,999.

Actors in the £200,000 and £249,999 bracket include Danny Dyer and Adam Woodyatt (both EastEnders), Rosie Marcel (Holby City), Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi, Sir David Jason (Still Open All Hours) and Emilia Fox (Silent Witness).

There are 21 actors are on the 96-strong list, with 12 women and nine men.

Speaking this morning on BBC radio, former BBC chairman Lord Grade called the government’s insistence that talent pay be disclosed “distasteful and disturbing”.

Today is a big day for Doctor Who fans, as actress Jodie Whittaker has officially been announced as the Thirteenth Time Lord on the long-running BBC series, with Peter Capaldi making his bow as the 12th Doctor during this year's Christmas special:

BBC America is doubling down on “Top Gear.”

Filmmaker Gavin O’Connor has had a lot of ups and downs in his career, at least in terms of his films getting a proper release, but he’s still managed to establish himself as a director that actors want to work with, whether it’s Edward Norton and Colin Farrell for his crime drama Pride & Glory or Natalie Portman in the Western Jane Got a Gun. A representative for Matt LeBlanc last week denied rumors that the actor had issued an ultimatum to the producers of Top Gear, saying that the actor did not, as was widely reported, threaten to leave the show if his co-host, Chris Evans, was not fired. Denials aside, Evans was, in fact, fired this week, leaving LeBlanc as the sole host of the BBC auto series.

LeBlanc's addition to the series this season was part of a retooling of the show that included the installation of Evans as host. However, the new format proved extremely unpopular, and the series' ratings have been in freefall. Noel Neill, best known for her role as Lois Lane in the 1950s series The Adventures of Superman, died Sunday in Arizona after a long illness. She was 95.

The actress’ friend, manager and biographer, Larry Ward, confirmed the news in a lengthy Facebook tribute.

Neill made her debut as TV’s Lois starting with Season 2, replacing Phyllis Coates in the role. She actually first played the icon reporter in the 1948 Superman film serial (opposite Kirk Alyn). She had cameos in the 1978 Superman film (which marked Christopher Reeve’s debut as the Man of Steel) as well as 2006’s Superman Returns...

After hanging out with his 'cousins' and Dermot O'Leary on The Getaway Driver for a few months, The Stig is now back where he belongs - on Top Gear. 

You'll spot him - and his Lego counterpart - in this trailer for BBC Two's upcoming revamp of the iconic motoring series, alongside Chris Evans, Matt LeBlanc, and some colourful vomit... 

Top Gear will return in May. We'll let you know when we hear an exact air-date.

The revamped “Top Gear” has already hit a bumpy patch of road.
