Aussie sentenced for DVD piracy
SYDNEY -- A Brisbane, Australia, man was sentenced to nine months Tuesday after being convicted on charges of DVD piracy. Senator Chris Ellison, the Minister for Justice and Customs, confirmed in a statement Wednesday that this is the first time an Australian has received a prison term for offences under the Copyright Act. Despite an innocent plea, Grant Priscott was found guilty of all 28 charges under subsections of the Copyright Act ranging from importing pirated DVDs into Australia, aiding and abetting the sale of pirated DVDs and possession of pirated DVDs for the purpose of selling. Priscott is to immediately serve 3 months of his sentence followed by a 5-year good behavior bond. According to the statement, evidence provided by officials in Brisbane and Sydney identified Priscott as having imported pirated DVDs of several hundred recent well known films into Australia from Malaysia, hidden in items falsely declared as speaker stands and cylindrical tubes.
