Worked as a copper miner and was in the Civilian Conservation Corp. Served in the Navy during World War II, then worked on Wall Street afterwards. Took acting classes to try to improve his sales skills, and decided to switch careers.
The son of Martha (Cacic/Cacich) and Joseph Elich, who were Croatian immigrants.
He is buried at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus, New Jersey.
