Hannah Einbinder made a surprise cameo in Saturday Night Live’s landmark 50th season premiere on Saturday, September 28, joining host Jean Smart in introducing musical guest Jelly Roll’s performance of the song “Liar.” Einbinder’s appearance shouldn’t be that much of a surprise: She and Smart are the lead stars of the Max comedy Hacks, but Einbinder is also part of the SNL family as the daughter of original cast member Laraine Newman. Newman joined Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, George Coe, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, Michael O’Donoghue, and Gilda Radner in the SNL Season 1 cast in 1975 and stayed on the NBC sketch-comedy show for five years. She married voice actor Chad Einbinder in 1991, and the couple welcomed Einbinder in 1995. Newman will be played by Emily Fairn in the upcoming movie about SNL‘s very first episode, Saturday Night, coming to theaters on October 11. Hannah Einbinder is here!

Hannah Einbinder, the stand-up comedian and twice Emmy-nominated and twice Golden Globe-nominated star of Max’s Hacks, is the guest on this week’s episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, which was recorded in front of an audience at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, from which Einbinder herself graduated in 2017.

Over the course of the conversation, the 28-year-old reflects on growing up as the daughter of funny people (her mother, Laraine Newman, was a member of the original Saturday Night Live cast, and her father is Chad Einbinder, a comedy writer and director); how she was changed by going on and then — just as she was getting into stand-up comedy — getting off of Adderall; and, as her first-ever acting gig, landing the role of comedy writer Ava opposite the legendary Jean Smart’s Deborah on Hacks, which is now rolling out its third season.

In March 2020 — as “Hacks” star Hannah Einbinder wryly calls it, a “really chill month” — the actress was out of work, much like the rest of the nation. As a comic looking to break through into Hollywood, she wasn’t receiving any parts that resonated with her.

“I kept being like, ‘Am I bad at acting?’” she recalled in an interview with TheWrap. But when the role of Ava landed in her inbox, described as an unemployed 25-year-old bisexual comedian, Einbinder — who is the daughter of original “Saturday Night Live” cast member Laraine Newman and actor Chad Einbinder — knew she had found what she was looking for.

“Then it was like, ‘Oh no, I was just waiting for a vivid, real, fully-fleshed out human being who I could conceivably know or encounter in the world,” she said.

As the HBO Max series “Hacks” continues its meteoric rise up the Emmy Awards charts, will growing support for the caustic comedy help co-star Hannah Einbinder crack the highly competitive Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category?

In the current Gold Derby odds, Einbinder is a bit of a longshot: She’s got 40/1 odds, good enough to tie Kathleen Turner from “The Kominsky Method” for 10th place overall. This year’s Best Supporting Actress category, however, has just eight slots. Expected favorites for a nomination are Hannah Waddingham (“Ted Lasso”), Kate McKinnon (“Saturday Night Live”), Rosie Perez (“The Flight Attendant”), Juno Temple (“Ted Lasso”), Cecily Strong (“Saturday Night Live”), Zosia Mamet (“The Flight Attendant”), Aidy Bryant (“Saturday Night Live”), and Paula Pell (“Girls5eva”).

But it’s arguable none of those performers are given as strong of an arc as Einbinder (who stands as a co-lead on “Hacks”), nor star opposite such a formidable force.
