Hapless, a new series streaming on Peacock, looks to bring the same energy from a crew of British comedians. It approaches its comedy with traditional sitcom approaches, but unlike many shows, it lets the humor spiral out of control. Most importantly, it gives its stars the material to milk the most laughs possible out of the punchlines. The show is very funny, even if it occasionally feels too similar to the Curb Your Enthusiasm or The League.

After 15 seasons of watching Larry David’s fictional self make a complete and utter ass of himself again and again, it might seem like the end is near for the medium.

Rest assured, this brand of humor will not disappear quickly, and streaming on Peacock today is Hapless, a British comedy from creator Gary Sinyor about -- to harken back to David’s Seinfeld -- nothing.

Exclusive: UK cringe comedy Hapless from director Gary Sinyor is set to launch stateside on Peacock on April 10th.

Hapless follows the misadventures of Paul Green (played by Outlander and Good Omens 2 actor Tim Downie), a single, freelance journalist working for the fourth largest Jewish publication in the UK. Across both seasons, Hapless chronicles Paul and his constant ability to end up in the most awkward – situations.

Also starring are Jeany Spark (Black Mirror), Mike Fenton Stevens (Slow Horses) and stand-up comedian Josh Howie. Guest stars include Sally Phillips (Veep) and Nick Blood (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.).

The sitcom has been described as similar in its approach to U.S. hit Curb Your Enthusiasm. It previously played on Prime in the UK and Viaplay in a handful of international territories.

British Airways (BA) has U-turned on its decision to remove a sitcom about the British Jewish community from its inflight entertainment package in the wake of the Israel-Hamas War.

Hapless, which revolves around an obsessive and gaffe-prone journalist for a fictional Jewish newspaper and was recently acquired by Peacock in the U.S., was initially due to screen on BA from late this year but after a content review it was removed.

After coming to the attention of director Gary Sinyor and others, BA has U-turned, stating that the series will run from early next year following the airline’s latest three-monthly content review.

Exclusive: Canada’s Waterside Studios is developing scripted projects with an array of North American writing and production talent.

The Corus Entertainment-owned studio is currently focusing on procedurals, half-hour comedies and young adult content after launching last year. On the back of its debut teen series Geek Girl going into production for Netflix and Corus, Head of Waterside Jeff Norton revealed a trio of titles developed with the likes of writer-producers Todd Berger and Julie Dicresce, Arnie Zipursky and Jeff Detsky.

Exclusive: Simon Pegg (Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning – Part One) and Minnie Driver (Rosaline) have signed on to star in Nandor Fodor and The Talking Mongoose, a dark comedy from writer-director Adam Sigal (Chariot), which has entered production in Leeds.

The film based on true events will follow Nandor Fodor (Pegg)—the Hungarian-American psychoanalyst, known as the father of parapsychology—on his search to discover the real Talking Mongoose, “Gef.” Driver will play Fodor’s assistant Anne, who journeys with him into uncharted territory, with Tim Downie (Good Omens), Ruth Connell (Supernatural), Paul Kaye (Game of Thrones), Gary Beadle (In the Heart of the Sea) and Drew Moerlin (V/H/S) rounding out the cast.

It’s been nearly two years since Starz unrolled a new episode of “Outlander,” but fans can finally catch up with their favorite literary characters come-to-life when the sixth season debuts on March 6.

Based on the “Outlander” series of books by Diana Gabaldon, this show has seen a lot of change since it first debuted in 2014. Over the course of five seasons Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) have grown together and apart with centuries between them as they figured out their love, had their daughter Bree (Sophie Skelton), survived wars and bid farewell to loved ones.

Safe to say, the fifth season of Starz’s “Outlander” was dramatic on an epic scale and ended pretty violently. With nearly two years’ time since last season’s finale aired on May 10, 2020, there is a lot to catch up on before viewers reconnect with the Fraser family. In a recent trailer for Season 6, it’s clear Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) — plus the rest of their brood — will have plenty of drama on the horizon as the Revolutionary War looms.

The “Gladiator” star plays the voice of God in the Amazon Prime Video original series, which is based on the book by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman.

Exclusive: Cast has been set for season two of Amazon and BBC’s Neil Gaiman fantasy series Good Omens, which remains in production in Scotland.

Reprising his role as Metatron is Derek Jacobi (Gladiator) and joining the cast for season two is his I, Claudius co-star Dame Siân Phillips (Dune).

Also returning this season in roles that span heaven, hell, and earth are the trio from The League of Gentlemen Mark Gatiss (Sherlock), Steve Pemberton (Killing Eve), and Reece Shearsmith (Inside No. 9).

Exclusive: European streamer Viaplay has picked up Nordic, Baltic, Dutch and Polish rights to UK comedy Hapless, which was also picked up by Netflix in the UK last year.

The series, which heralds from veteran Brit director Gary Sinyor, revolves around an obsessive and gaffe-prone journalist for a fictitious Jewish newspaper. Brit comedy actor Tim Downie (Toast Of London) stars.

Blue Penguin, the TV production arm of James Spring’s Fred Films (Finding Your Feet), has joined forces with Sinyor’s Magnet Films for the second season which is set to begin filming next month.

The Viaplay deal also includes season two of the “cringe” comedy, which has been described as similar in its approach to U.S. hit Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Season two will comprises eight episodes and also stars Lucy Montgomery as Paul’s sweary sister, Mike Fenton Stevens as their impish dad and Josh Howie as Paul’s highly neurotic friend.

Exclusive: My5, the streaming service run by ViacomCBS’s UK network Channel 5, has acquired British comedy series Hapless, which first started life as a self-released project on Amazon Prime Video.

The six-part series was created, written, and produced by Gary Sinyor and stars Outlander and Paddington actor Tim Downie as Paul Green, a journalist on the UK’s fourth most successful Jewish newspaper.

The series first launched on Amazon last year under the title The Jewish Enquirer, but with industry production slowing down during the coronavirus pandemic, Sinyor saw an opportunity to pitch the show to a broadcaster. It goes live on My5 in March

Hapless co-stars Geoffrey McGivern (Little Dorrit) and Lucy Montgomery (Tracey Ullman’s Show) as Green’s father and sister, while Josh Howie (Call Me Alvy) features as the journalist’s best friend. Sinyor himself provides the voice of Green’s narrow-minded editor.

“Outlander” is always at its strongest when it explores the century-spanning love between Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe), and the forces that keep them apart or bring them together. So even though the characters weren’t physically together until the very end of “Perpetual Adoration,” their love grounded the episode through the flash-forward scenes that urged Claire across the pond, and ultimate back to her husband. Add in the (somewhat miraculous) advent of penicillin, some religious musings, and characters coming to terms with their pasts, and it was a full installment with lots to dig into.

It all kicked off with Claire’s eureka moment in which she effectively “invented” penicillin so that she could perform tonsillectomies on the twins, a storyline that was mirrored in the future when Claire unexpectedly lost her Scottish patient, Graham Menzies (Stephen McCole), to a penicillin allergy before a routine surgery. Prior to the fifth season premiere of “Outlander,” executive producer Maril Davis spoke with Variety about the challenges of adapting “The Fiery Cross,” the Diana Gabaldon book on which the season is based, noting the slower pace of the storytelling and fewer moments of tentpole action. “It’s funny, of all the books, this is the one I had the hardest time reading more than once,” Davis said at the time. “Even [Diana], when I’ve talked to her about it, I think she feels the same way. I think for most people, ‘The Fiery Cross’ is a little different. Still amazing, but I think we did have a challenging time adapting this one.”
