Tim Rice was so impressed with Donovan's performance as Joseph during the 1991-1992 West End London Theatre run of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat (1991), that he pushed heavily for Donovan to play Simba in The Lion King (1994). But Jeffrey Katzenberg refused as Donovan wasn't a big enough name for an American audience.

Joseph was amazing - they had to block off the streets outside the Palladium, there were so many people wanting autographs. For a year there wasn't an unsold seat in the house. I'll tell you what though, in the end, I was sick to death of it.
