Chicago – With so many unfaithful weiners crowding the daily news cycle, I suppose it’s as appropriate a time as any for a film like Dana Adam Shapiro’s “Monogamy.” As in the over-publicized Anthony Weiner case, the infidelity in Shapiro’s film never actually takes place. Instead of physical contact, the affair takes place entirely within the obsessive mind of a sexually frustrated voyeur.
Unfortunately, the voyeur is played by Chris Messina, a good actor who seems oddly incapable of garnering audience empathy. Every time his face shows up on the screen, I’m suddenly filled with the intense desire to punch it. Perhaps my reaction is simply due to the fact that Messina has delivered multiple memorable portrayals of oafish, self-absorbed masculinity. He played the allegedly lovable boyfriend in “Julie & Julia,” who devoured his wife’s carefully prepared dishes with all the etiquette of a slovenly swine.

Monogamy - DVD Review
Color me surprised at how much I liked this film.
At first glance you could see a movie about a photographer who takes clandestine pictures of clients who pay to be shot in the wild, an odd subset of humans who need to see what it’s like to be shown in their natural territory, as something Hitchcock would cook up when one of the clients takes it up a notch and gets a little freaky deekey, having a penchant for voyeurism.
Purposely antagonizing the guy, the sexualized client and photog share in a relationship that isn’t so much physical as it is cerebral. As, you see, the guy is getting married to Rashida Jones, a woman...

Monogamy, the new drama directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Dana Adam Shapiro (Murderball), will be released on DVD on June 14 by Oscilloscope Laboratories. The film stars Rashida Jones (The Social Network) and Chris Messina (Greenberg).
Rashida Jones and Chris Messina attempt to follow the rules of Monogamy.
In the movie, Messina plays wedding photographer Theo, who lives a comfortable life in Brooklyn with his budding musician fiancee Nat (Jones). In Monogamy, Chris Messina plays Theo, a burnt out wedding photographer who starts a side job that involves photographing clients in a more natural, unaware surrounding. When one of his clients with the provocative handle "Subgirl" (Meital Dohan) shows up for her session and puts on quite a show, it leads Theo down a road of obsession that puts a strain on his current engagement to Nat (Rashida Jones). Movieline sat down with Messina to discuss the dark twists of Monogamy, an audition outburst that led to him being banned for life from the future work of The Sopranos' David Chase, and why it was unfair that Devil got caught up in the stink left over from M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender.

The narrative feature debut from Murderball co-director Dana Adam Shapiro, Monogamy was well received when it premiered at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival and even better received at the 2011 Independent Spirit Awards, where it's garnered a nod [1] for Best First Screenplay. The film follows a bored Brooklyn-based photographer (Chris Messina) who, amidst doubts about getting married to his fiancée (Rashida Jones), develops an unconventional side business where clients hire him to stalk them with his camera. It's described as [2] marrying "a mystery-thriller with a slice-of-life relationship drama to present a marvelously observed portrait of masculinity in crisis in the face of its own fantasies and fears of commitment". Check out the trailer after the break. I've been wondering when we'd see Chris Messina get a challenging lead role, and this looks like it may be it. The film selection at the Tribeca Film Festival tends to be pretty hit-or-miss, but one of the movies from last year that I really enjoyed was Monogamy, the narrative feature debut from Murderball documentarian Dana Adam Shapiro, and starring Chris Messina in a role that really gets away from his cuddly good-guy parts in Six Feet Under and Julie & Julia. He stars as a Brooklyn-based photographer who becomes obsessed with a mysterious, exhibitionist blonde (Meital Dohan) after receiving a mysterious work assignment; all the while he's growing distant from his fiancee (Rashida Jones) and having doubts about this entire commitment to marriage. The film isn't perfect but definitely interesting, well-photographed and well-acted-- and if you're a resident of modern, wealthy Brooklyn, kind of interesting as a hometown effort. Oscilloscope picked up Monogamy at Tribeca last year and will release the film starting March 11. Check out the trailer below or in...

Who are you watching? Oscilloscope Pictures has debuted the official trailer on Apple (via The Film Stage) for the indie thriller Monogamy, starring Chris Messina, Rashida Jones and Meital Dohan. Messina plays a photographer, and Jones his wife; things go very weird when a mysterious woman hires him to take surveillance photos. I like seeing Messina in strong lead roles, he's an underrated actor, but this has such a dark, mysterious vibe to it. Dana Adam Shapiro blasted onto the scene with Murderball, a Sundance doc about fear-less wheelchair warriors consumed by a modified full-contact sport of rugby. His first narrative feature film Monogamy, which just got picked up by Oscilloscope Laboratories, is described as a cautionary tale about sex, photography, and fear of marriage. I found this clip on the filmmaker's site that sees actress Rashida Jones totally nail it - love her character's response. Here's the synopsis on the film which Oscilloscope will peg with a 2011 date - and below is a Youtube clip of premiere night at the Tribeca Film Festival which may contain some spoilers. Wiener, anxious about his impending marriage to Nat (Jones) and thoroughly bored with his day job as a wedding photographer, Theo (Chris Messina) establishes a hobby: he's hired by clients to clandestinely snap voyeuristic photos of them as they go about their days.

Michael Imperioli has been cast as the lead in writer-director Richard Ledes' horror-thriller "Foreclosure."
The former "Sopranos" star joins Wendell Pierce, Bill Raymond, Jeff Burchfield, Meital Dohan, Brandon Gill, Spencer List, Tristan Laurence Perez, William Stone Mahoney and Roger Robinson in the creeper.
With a tagline of "ghosts don't move out," "Foreclosure" sets its action in a nearly empty, economically depressed neighborhood block, amid the real-life context of the mortgage crisis where so many homes are bank-owned.
Ged Dickersin ("City Island") is producing the project, which Ledes will begin shooting in Queens next week.
"Michael Imperioli is a great actor with a deep understanding of filmmaking," said Ledes. "Like a jazz ensemble, I can't imagine a better artist to join the two cats with whom I've had the privilege to work previously and who are back for 'Foreclosure': Wendell Pierce and Bill Raymond."

Writer-director Richard Ledes announced that Michael Imperioli ( The Lovely Bones ) will star in his new horror-thriller Foreclosure . Imperioli joins a cast that includes Ledes regulars Wendell Pierce ( The Wire ) and Bill Raymond ( Michael Clayton ), as well as Jeff Burchfield, Meital Dohan, Brandon Gill, Spencer List, Tristan Laurence Perez, William Stone Mahoney and Roger Robinson. We spoke to Ledes about his project here . With an early tagline of "ghosts don't move out" and set on a neighborhood block in which nearly every house sits vacant and bank-owned, Ledes' screenplay is inspired by the contemporary mortgage crisis but is also infused with a dark sense of distinctly American socio-economic history - a history that may be about to repeat itself....

Dana Adam Shapiro is a bit of a slut -- artistically speaking, that is. An Oscar-nominated documentarian for "Murderball" and an acclaimed novelist ("The Every Boy"), in addition to forays into animation, music and still photography following a stint as an editor at Spin magazine, Shapiro had already achieved plenty before taking home the prize for Best New York Film at this year's Tribeca Film Festival for his narrative debut. "Monogamy" centers on Theo (Chris Messina), a soon-to-be married photographer with a side career as a "photostalker" for hire. He's employed by strangers to snap them when they are unaware of the camera, leading to an arousing encounter with one of his clients (Meital Dohan) in a public park, a mystery surrounding who she is and whether he could commit to a lifetime with his fiancée (Rashida Jones).

There are actually very few films at the Tribeca Film Festival that are filmed in the city where the festival takes place, and even fewer that boast well-known actors and are actually any good. Somehow Monogamy manages to be both, a film set in modern gentrified Brooklyn and starring Chris Messina and Rashida Jones as a couple on the verge of marriage, comfortable and in love but maybe not as perfect as they could. Messina's character is the center of the film, a photographer who becomes obsessed with one of his subjects (Meital Dohan), a mysterious woman who as free with her sex life as he feels constricted in his own. You can read more of my take on Monogamy in my review here, then check out the conversation I had with Messina, Dohan and the film's director Dana Adam Shapiro, who previously made his mark as a documentarian with...

It's not exactly coincidence that today's launch of Sony's zombie comedy web seriesWoke Up Dead comes on the heels of the company's box-office-winning $25 million opening weekend for Zombieland. In fact it was pretty much by design. With its debut on Crackle today, the Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) led comedy is the latest example of how the studios are starting the work their digital properties into the synergistic business mix, capitalizing on buzz from one property to drive interest in another. The series is touted as the tentpole of Crackle's fall lineup, one that is slimmed down from previous seasons to feature just a handful of premium, more polished online series from Sony Pictures Television. It's the latest from online creative shop Electric Farm Entertainment, the guys behind web series like NBC's Gemini Division and more recently MTV's Valemont. Heder stars as a six-year USC grad turned office drone, Drex Greene,...
