West Ham United may have spent the first six months of the 2015-16 Premier League campaign in the top half of the table, but experiencing such lofty heights has been a rare occurrence in previous years.
Since 1993, the East London outfit have only finished in eighth position or above on three occasions, something which was last achieved during 2001-2002 when the likes of Michael Carrick, Joe Cole and Jermain Defoe plied their trade for the Hammers.
Despite twice being relegated to the second tier of English football since that year, West Ham have always been considered an attractive option for players looking to impress in the Premier League, but like with many clubs, they find themselves in the position of acting as a stepping stone for players who believe their future lies elsewhere.
In some cases, that has been inevitable. When Alan Pardew pulled off one...

In one of the most outlandish transfer stories of the summer window to date, Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Roma left-back Ashley Cole.
The Daily Star claim that the Magpies will make a move for the former Chelsea and Arsenal defender as they look to recruit a greater number of English players.
Capped 107 times by the Three Lions, Cole moved on a free to Roma last summer but struggled to find a regular starting place at the Italian club.
Sean Dempsey/Pa Archive/Press Association Images
Head coach Rudi Garcia simply does not fancy Cole and he usually opts for either Vasilis Toroosidis or Jose Holebas as his first choice left-back instead.
With Cole having just 12 months remaining on his contract, the Star claim new Toon chief Steve McClaren will make a move for the Champions League-winning left-back, who...

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has finally joined the social-media revolution – and with only his second-ever tweet he threatened to give potential trolls tickets to watch the Magpies play as punishment.
The former England captain, who scored a club-record 206 goals for Newcastle between 1996 and 2006, joined Twitter for the first time on Wednesday.
And he spent little time in trying to deter trolls from giving him abuse by threatening to give them tickets to have to watch Newcastle play – with the Magpies having failed to win any of their last nine matches.

Tweeting from his new, verified account @alanshearer, the Match of the Day pundit warned trolls not to give him any abuse. He tweeted:
“Be warned. Any abuse and I’ll come round and give you Newcastle tickets!”

“Ash! Are you listening? ‘ said a virtually hyperventilating Jonathan. “I’m here in the office and David Dein is saying they aren’t going to give you £60k a week. They’ve agreed £55k and this is their best and final offer. Are you happy with that?” When I heard Jonathan repeat the figure of £55k I nearly swerved off the road. I was so incensed. I was trembling with anger. I couldn’t believe what i’d heard.” – Ashley Cole, September 2006.
It was this extract from Ashley Cole’s autobiography, detailing his failed negotiations with Arsenal over a new contract, that subsequently earned him the nickname ‘Cashley’ Cole – a situation which was exacerbated by a switch to big-spending Chelsea.
It is this example of animalistic greed and selfishness that has blighted the modern game, with multimillionaires tossing their toys out of the...

Football is a fickle business. One minute the world can be at a player’s feet, they’re the cock of the walk and everything seems to be going their way, the next minute they can find themselves wallowing in the lower leagues or without a club, forgotten and wondering what might have been.
Take Michael Johnson for example. The former Manchester City man was widely regarded as one of the best prospects in English football, had earned two England Under-21 caps and had broken in to the City side as an eighteen year old. Now, at the age of just 26, he has been retired for two years, having put on a lot of weight, been found guilty of drink-driving and suffered from mental health problems.
While the example of Johnson may be an extreme one, it serves as a stark reminder of what can happen so quickly in football.

A large number of top players have left Tottenham Hotspur over the years. Sol Campbell, Michael Carrick, Dimitar Berbatov, Luka Modric and Gareth Bale spring to mind immediately – but those players had, in their minds, outgrown the club and effectively forced their way out. With that in mind, it was best to let them go, as their hearts were no longer with the Lilywhites and their enduring presence would only have disrupted the White Hart Lane dressing room.
However, there have also obviously been players sold who weren’t as vital to the team as most of the aforementioned superstars and who Spurs decided to sell off their own backs. Some of these players simply never performed, others hadn’t broken in to the first team yet, others didn’t fit the club’s style of play and others were deemed to be...

West Ham have been criticised in recent years for our tendency to panic buy. £15.5 million for a repeatedly injured Andy Carroll doesn’t scream great value. Neither does a £10.75 million Matt Jarvis; although he has put in some great performances for us, he’d be hard pushed to live up to that price tag.
Even when purchasing seemingly wisely, we have seldom seen great surprise purchases. When we received £18 million for the sale if Rio Ferdinand to Leeds, Harry Redknapp decided to use the money to sign a number of cheaper players rather than a replacement. Arrivals included £2.5 million Rigobert Song and £2.2 million Titi Camara, who were both an embarrassment to the club.
Criticisms aside, however, some of our dealings in the transfer market have really paid off and bargain players have flourished at West Ham. This list is a celebration of those rare occasions in...

Due to this increased significance, spending wisely has become pivotal to the success of a football club. Over the years, West Ham’s dealings in the transfer market have often produced gems. Players such as Paulo Di Canio and John Hartson will forever be hailed as West Ham legends. Our transfer flops and failures, however, have also stuck in the mind of every Hammers fan sometimes just as much as our heroes.
Despite the multitude of players that West Ham have been linked to in the past, we have continued to throw our money into the strangest of signings. Tottenham Hotspur Football Club’s promising young right back Ryan Fredericks has joined Championship side Middlesbrough on loan.
The 21-year-old – who can also play on the right side of midfield – joins Aitor Karanka’s Riverside revolution, as the Spanish former Real Madrid Assistant Manager looks to put his stamp on the squad at the North East club.
Fredericks signed for Spurs as a youth player in 2008 and has found a first team place hard to come by. He has only appeared four times in total – twice from the start and twice from the bench – all of which came in European competition.
It would have been extremely hard for him to make an impression this season, as Spurs have Kyle Walker and Kyle Naughton directly ahead of him, while Eric Dier has come in and proven that he is more than capable of covering...

The Daily Mail believe that Tottenham Hotspur are willing to listen to offers for their German international midfielder Lewis Holtby.
The Former Schalke 04 man, who has earned three caps for Germany since making his international debut in 2010 and is an energetic and creative box-to-box engine room-type player, was loaned out to Fulham towards the end of last season as Tim Sherwood seemed unimpressed by him, but it was thought that new boss Mauricio Pochettino had seen enough of Holtby to want him as part of his plans – indeed, the Argentinian gave the midfielder the last half hour against West Ham United in the Premier League opener on Saturday and he was a prominent player in Spurs’ pre-season schedule.
However, it is now believed that Pochettino actually wants to trim the squad and that Holtby will be part of a last-minute fire sale that...

Professional footballers these days are paid an absolutely fortune – just ask Wayne Rooney at Manchester United, with his £300,000 a week salary (that’s £1,785 every hour and just under £30 every minute) – but not all of them actually earn it.

Everyone knows footballers are a strange breed, and it’s well documented that they’re perversely fond of controversy, whether it’s on the field or away from the glaring eyes of fans and Sky Sports cameras. Quite frankly, the history of the professional sport has proved beyond a doubt that the stars of the beautiful game are not scared of making themselves look incredibly stupid either.
And often, those madcap actions produce lengthy suspensions from footballing governing bodies. We’ve seen another shining example recently, after Liverpool striker Luis Suarez decided to stop acting like a human being and sink his teeth into a fellow professional for what, quite unbelievably, is the third time the Uruguayan has bitten an opponent. This time, his decision to do it at the World Cup and in front of the biggest guaranteed football audience possible has...

But which players are capable of exerting their own special influence on a game, yet go largely unnoticed in comparison? Which players are perhaps not so well-known or recognised, yet are equally important to their clubs?

Newcastle have four participants at the tournament in South America with Tim Krul expected act as second understudy goalkeeper with Holland while Cheick Tiote will be the cornerstone of the Ivory Coast midfield. Wherever Alan Pardew chooses to watch Saturday’s match against the side he once helped reach an Fa Cup Final as a player, the banished Newcastle boss will be certain that his team are in for a tough encounter. Crystal Palace are fighting hard to preserve their Premier League status for next season and will be fully motivated for their second game in the North East within a week.

Newcastle’s topsy turvy season took another nose dive last weekend with defeat away to Fulham, the league’s basement dwellers. The Magpies have struggled for consistency since the turn of the year and can often be an infuriating side to watch. In the hullabaloo surrounding Pardew’s rush of blood to the head at Hull, it was largely forgotten how well his team played that day, only for it all to fall apart again one week later.

However, Joe Cole and Mohamed Diame are available again after the duo missed Saturday’s victory over Aston Villa due to injury.
Robert Snodgrass faces a late fitness test after the Norwich midfielder missed the draw with Manchester City due to a groin injury.
Gary Hooper has recovered from a knock he suffered in that game but Jonas Gutierrez is out.

It was the Premier League debutants that made the difference this afternoon in a crucial game between two relegation candidates, as three of the four goals were scored by new players.
Tom Ince opened the scoring after 15 minutes in his first start in Palace colours before fellow deadline day signing Joe Ledley headed home his own debut goal. In the second half it took just 40 seconds for West Brom debutant Thievy Bifouma to find the net but the comeback was halted by Marouane Chamakh’s penalty.
Victor Anichebe had the first chance of the match when a long ball sent him through on goal but he could only hit a tame shot straight at Julian Speroni.

A brace from Kevin Nolan secures a huge three points for the Hammers as they continue to struggle against relegation from the English Premier League.
Both headed assists came from former Newcastle man Andy Carroll, who subsequently found himself taking an early bath after appearing to accidentally catch Chico Flores with his arm on 59 minutes.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Hammers comfortably held off the Welsh outfit to secure a much-needed win.
Nolan’s opener came on 26 minutes. Carroll nodded down a cross to the captain, who had time to control the ball before hammering home the opening goal.
The second came on 45 minutes, just before the break. Carroll nodded on a corner for Nolan to finish the job with a neat header.
The result moves the Hammers onto 22 points, within 3 goals of safety as it stands in 18th place.
