The Magicians reminds us that “the most important characters aren’t who you expect,” in this week’s cleverly executed episode.

The Magicians Season 4 Episode 7
The Magicians is making us eat our words as it answers the exact question we were critically posing last week: “Where the heck is Kady?” In a wonderfully meta homage to minor characters, Penny 40 makes his return with an exploration of what’s really important in the story of season 4, and although we don’t really get a full picture of how Kady’s revolution, Fen’s prophecies, and Zelda’s misgivings about the Order relate to each other, the seeds have now been planted, and we’re dying to know how it turns out. Since we’re now in the back half of the season, there’s a greater expectation for resolution to the problem of the...

The events of The Magicians Season 3 Episode 13 “Will You Play With Me?” left fans shook, and the return doesn’t disappoint. The Magicians Season 4 Episode 1, “A Flock of Lost Birds,” deftly introduces the new world order and sets the course for the season ahead.
Our Brakebills students have all been leading new lives with glamours placed on them for their safety. Introducing us to their new lives is something that has to be done quickly but also give us enough to keep the plot moving forward.
It’s a little jarring when a new student arrives at Brakebill’s to take the entrance exam. Kimber seems like a new student we are going to follow through the season as she learns about magic being real.
It makes sense that we'd see a new student in this scenario, our favorite characters are spread out, magic has just been rationed, and yet...

The Magicians season 4 premiere somehow manages to refresh the series’ entire central concept, and we’re mesmerized by the results.

The Magicians Season 4 Episode 1
The Magicians was already remarkable for having improved on its storytelling from its uneven first season to its stellar sophomore outing to its top-notch quest for the seven keys in season three, but if “A Flock of Lost Birds” is any indication of what’s to come, season 4 will outdo them all. This amazing premiere was by no means a sure thing given the shocking but somewhat worryingly disruptive finale last year, but somehow this fresh take on the characters we love with their new identities is like re-discovering The Magicians all over again. Every moment and every subplot was a pure joy!
Who’d have thought that would be true, even for the introduction of Kimber D’Antoni...
