Jenn and I have spent the first part of the month dissecting fictionalized adaptations of cults, including Jim Jones and Jonestown (listen), as well as Ti West’s The Sacrament (listen). Then we spent the last few weeks looking at David Koresh and the Branch Davidians (listen), which led to an infamous 51-day stand-off and accompanying siege on Waco.
The Paramount+ series was always going to be biased because it is based on two books written by men involved in the siege: cult survivor David Thibodeau’s A Place Called Waco, as well as Gary Noesner’s Stalling for Time: My Life as an FBI Hostage Negotiator.
What frustrates, though, is how their stories wind up being given priority. In our discussion of the first half of the series (listen), Jenn and I hoped that the female “characters” – played by actors like Andrea Riseborough, Julia Garner, and Melissa Benoist – would...

With any true crime story adapted for film or TV, we expect a certain amount of narrative license. Creators may sand off a few here and condense a timeline there to present a coherent and digestible timeline. But what gets lost in this translation? And can we still trust the story we see?
In the newest episode of Bloody FM’s Murder Made Fiction podcast, Joe and Jenn encounter this issue in the 2018 series Waco.
Created by Drew and John Erick Dowdle, this limited series begins with a sympathetic David Koresh (Taylor Kitsch) begging for mercy while a group of soldiers point guns in his face. Early episodes take us back to a burgeoning cult leader building his flock while a government agency struggles to rehabilitate its image.
But what details have been softened in this less-than-faithful retelling and are the story’s real victims getting lost in the shuffle?...

This post contains spoilers for "Signs."
For me, "Signs" is the ultimate M. Night Shyamalan cinematic experience, and it has only gotten better with time. Before the film's 2002 release, Shyamalan had already proven his caliber as an up-and-coming filmmaker with "The Sixth Sense" and "Unbreakable" — two entries that still live up to their fame — but "Signs" solidified his ability to shock, mesmerize, and entertain. Popular discourse surrounding "Signs" often revolves around its final twist, but this sci-fi thriller flick offers much more than that; it is a dynamic exploration of apprehension and anxieties that culminate in an event that could lead to the end of the world.
Shyamalan invests the alien invasion premise with an empathetic focal point in the form of the Hess family, as we are privy to every doubt, toil, and crisis they undergo while the film inches towards its exhilarating climax. Graham (Mel Gibson), a pastor...

Let’s preheat the oven, there’s an Anthony Bourdain biopic on the menu.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, the ingredients are put together for a film about the beloved chef, traveler and troubadour who became a sensation with the publication of his 2000 memoir “Kitchen Confidential,” and hosted several television series. He tragically died by suicide in 2018.
Dominic Sessa, the young co-star of last year’s Oscar-nominated picture “The Holdovers” is said to be playing the lead in “Tony.”
“Tony” is set up at the tony distributor A24, and given the pedigree of its lead and director, is poised to conquer the mindspace of editors at New York and Los Angeles-based lifestyle publications. A recent feature documentary about Bourdain, “Roadrunner,” was released in 2021 and his book “Kitchen Confidential” was adapted into a Fox sitcom that didn’t quite hit in 2005, starring Bradley Cooper. Although the current state of the "Scream" franchise is a giant mess, it's worth remembering that merely a few years ago, its future seemed as bright as ever. 2022's "Scream" was a clear-cut hit at the box office, and it successfully introduced a whole new generation of characters who could be chased around with a knife for many installments to come. "Scream 5" not only did all this while keeping Sidney and Gale in the fold, but it also set the groundwork for the return of Kirby (Hayden Panettiere).
Despite being a fan favorite in "Scream 4," Kirby was tragically left for dead near the end of the movie. How'd she die? Well, she made the tragic mistake of trusting her potential love interest Charlie (Rory Culkin), trying to save him from Ghostface when she should've been saving herself. In an exclusive uInterview, Rory Culkin discusses his new film, 5 Lbs of Pressure.
5 Lbs of Pressure follows Adam, an ex-con, as he returns to his neighborhood following a 16-year prison sentence for murder. Culkin’s character, Mike, meets Adam as he is searching for a way out of his uncle’s drug-dealing business. The two men embark on a journey to redemption.
“Mike is looking for a way out, he’s trying to carve his own path and he’s kind of blowing it the whole time,” Culkin told uInterview founder Erik Meers. “But I guess the whole film is about poor decisions and trying to redeem yourself. Some people are better at that than others.”
When asked how he tries to relate to a character like Mike, Culkin said he discussed the character with writer and director Phil Allocco.

Kieran Culkin is one of the best actors of this generation, this is not a shocker as he comes from a family of actors, where his older brother Macaulay Culkin is already a prominent name in the film industry. One of the major strengths of Culkin is how effortlessly he blends humor with his characters, making them more entertaining and adding a layer of depth to them.

"Five pounds of trigger pressure – so your aim, never off." Lionsgate has revealed an official trailer for the film 5lbs of Pressure, an action thriller by filmmaker Phil Allocco. Filmed mostly in the UK even though this is an American production. Yet another generic crime thriller with the same characters and plot we've seen often recently. Trying to start over, Adam searches for redemption returning to his old neighborhood to put to rest his demons, though he comes under new pressure when the brother of the man he killed seeks revenge on him. Meanwhile, Mike, is trying to escape a life of crime living under the thumb of his gangster Uncle Leff. The movie stars Luke Evans as Adam, Rory Culkin as Mike, Zac Adams, Rudy Pankow, Stephanie Leonidas, Savannah Steyn, Lorraine Burroughs, and Alex Pettyfer as Leff. This is not a bad trailer, it just doesn't really convince me this is worth watching.

Exclusive: Writer-director Courtney J. Camerota has wrapped production on her first feature, Dead Guy, a dark comedy shot under an Interim Agreement that will be introduced to buyers at AFM by CAA Media Finance. Among those in the starry cast are two-time Oscar nominee Michael Shannon (The Bikeriders), Golden Globe nominee Eva Longoria (Sylvie’s Love), Judy Greer (White House Plumbers), Luis Guzman (Story Ave), Amaury Nolasco (The Valet), Rory Culkin (Black Mirror), Curtis Armstrong (New Girl), Ashley Reyes (Walker), and Richard Ellis (Walker).
Dead Guy‘s plot is set into motion when an abrasive old man suddenly dies in the apartment of a neighbor. An absurd game of hot potato then begins with the not-so-dearly departed, as neighbors and building workers each pass the body along, in the hopes of not being linked to the old man’s demise.
Marking the launch of Shft, the new production company of Zac Adams, Dead Guy is also produced by Ryan Lewis of Ryan J. Lewis, Esq, as well as Chadd Harbold of Post Film. Jack Christian of Filmology served as a producer and financier. Exec producers included D.J. McPherson of Filmology, Jared Safier and Justin Safier of Safier Entertainment, Russ Posternak of Post Film, and Nathan Marcus.
Said Camerota, “I wrote this script years ago and to finally see it come to life is a dream come true. The opportunity to work with such an incredible cast, crew and producing team for my directorial debut has been an absolute honor. I can’t wait for the world to see Dead Guy.”
Producer Zac Adams stated that “as both a filmmaker and movie lover, the main goal is to always create films that are not only of the highest quality, but films that are enjoyable. With the world being as dark as it’s been the past few years, I hope our film helps spread some much needed light. It was an absolute honor and privilege in helping Courtney’s vision come to life.”
Added producer Ryan Lewis, “When I read this script I knew this movie had to be made. I’m thrilled that I got to help make it, and got to do so with both a friend and client in Courtney. Our incredible cast is a testament to Courtney’s writing and I’m overjoyed to see her vision come to life on the big screen.”
Shannon is repped by CAA, Range, and Yorn, Levine, Barnes; Longoria by WME, Linden Entertainment, and Yorn, Levine, Barnes; Greer by CAA, Artists First, and Felker Toczek Suddleson; Guzman by Gersh and Gravesend Entertainment; Nolasco by Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman; Culkin by Paradigm and Brookside Artist Management; Armstrong by Cesd; and Reyes by Stewart Talent and Mosaic.

Out of all the different types of films, the horror genre takes some of the biggest swings when it comes to endings. From bleak conclusions to those that tie everything up in a neat bow, horror movie endings have shocked, confused, and annoyed audiences over the years. One's opinion on horror's most (in)famous endings depends a lot on personal preference. Do you prefer an ending that offers hope or one that drives home a message of wretchedness? Are you a fan of the Shyamalan twist, or do you go for a more subtle approach?
A lot of thought goes into the ending of any film, and horror movies in particular. Sometimes, the director or writer's original vision isn't what ends up on screen. How test audiences react to a film can alter its ending considerably, and sometimes studios just can't get behind the film's creative vision. In other instances,...

Although Black Mirror is a dystopic concept, with most stories leaving us in a very saddened state, some of the episodes have been rather entertaining and even uplifting in some cases. However, the third episode of the sixth season, titled Beyond the Sea, is so heartbreaking that once you take out the sci-fi aspect of it, it’s just a mirror of human cruelty. Starring Aaron Paul, Josh Hartnett, and Kate Mara in leading roles, the episode shows how a man goes from victim to victimizer. Here’s what happens in this heartbreaking episode:
Each episode of Black Mirror is equated to something we might witness in the future or the technology of tomorrow terrifying the people of today. However, the third episode, Beyond the Sea, jumps back in time to the 1960s, when space missions were the most funded and highlighted projects. In one such project, astronauts Cliff and...

[This story contains major spoilers from the Black Mirror season six episode “Beyond the Sea.”]
Charlie Brooker warned that some of the season six Black Mirror episodes were going to be the bleakest yet. And “Beyond the Sea,” starring the trio of Aaron Paul, Josh Hartnett and Kate Mara, certainly fits that bill.
In the 80-minute space saga, Paul and Hartnett play astronauts aboard a spaceship on a six-year mission. The episode, however, takes place in an alternative 1969 where technology exists so the astronauts can beam their consciousness back down to Earth via a space-travel link and walk among their families as a mechanical replica while their real bodies sleep in a spacepod.
But things go horribly wrong for Hartnett’s astronaut, David. In the middle of the night, a hippie-like cult (led by Rory Culkin) invades his family home and brutally murders David’s free-spirited wife (Auden Thornton) and children in front of his (replica’s) eyes,...

Black Mirror Season 6 Episode 3
David Ross (Josh Hartnett) has it all – a beautiful family, a designer home, wealth, good looks, and the kind of job that makes young guys stop him at the movies because they want to shake him by the hand. The man we meet in the opening scenes of Black Mirror’s “Beyond the Sea” is everything American society in 1969 told men they should be – except real.
The fact that David and his colleague Cliff Stanfield (Aaron Paul) are robotic replicas on Earth who timeshare their consciousnesses with their human bodies while they man a mission up in space is not this episode’s Black Mirror twist. That comes much later, and is not so much a twist as the sobering reminder that nothing is so dangerous to women and children as a man with a bruised ego.

Beyond the Sea is the third episode of the sixth season of the popular TV series Black Mirror. Directed by John Crowley and starring Aaron Paul, Josh Hartnett, and Kate Mara, the episode explores the concept of alternate realities and challenges viewers to question whether our current reality is truly real or just a fantasy. With the help of technology, we are now able to immerse ourselves in fictional worlds that are so realistic and enticing that we may even consider abandoning our own reality to live in them permanently.

It’s time for another episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series, and with this one we’re looking at Scream 4 (watch it Here), the one entry in the Scream franchise that had a surprising lack of success at the box office. The audience didn’t come back for this one, which was released eleven years after the previous film, but did return for the more recent sequels. Directed by Wes Craven from a screenplay by Kevin Williamson – which received uncredited rewrites from Ehren Kruger and Paul Harris Boardman – Scream 4 has the following synopsis: It has been many years since the Ghostface Killer cut a deadly path through the town of Woodsboro. “Black Mirror” creator Charlie Brooker revealed to Empire magazine that he went full “Black Mirror” by asking the artificial intelligence chatbot known as ChatGPT to write an episode of his beloved anthology series. The final results were “shit,” according to Brooker.
“I’ve toyed around with ChatGPT a bit,” Brooker said. “The first thing I did was type ‘generate “Black Mirror” episode’ and it comes up with something that, at first glance, reads plausibly, but on second glance, is shit. Because all it’s done is look up all the synopses of ‘Black Mirror’ episodes, and sort of mush them together.”
Brooker added, “If you dig a bit more deeply you go, ‘Oh, there’s not actually any real original thought here.’ It’s [1970s impressionist] Mike Yarwood — there’s a topical reference.”
While the ChatGPT-scripted “Black Mirror” episode was unusable, it did prove helpful for Brooker in pointing out several “Black Mirror” cliches.

Dominique Fishback is sitting backstage waiting to discuss her latest role, starring in Amazon Prime Video’s “Swarm,” when her ears perk up at a familiar sound: an engine revving.
On the other side of a partition, an audience watches a particularly tense scene from the show’s fourth episode, titled “Running Scared,” when Fishback’s Dre — a murderous super fan of Ni’jah, a Beyoncé-esque pop star — faces down a group of women who stand between her and attending the singer’s concert.
Fishback playfully re-enacts the scene, gripping an imaginary steering wheel and pressing her high-heeled foot down onto a pretend gas pedal that sends her speeding ahead and crashing into Dre’s latest victims. She pulls a funny face and hams it up for a rep’s cellphone camera, unknowingly demonstrating the type of darkly comedic energy that makes “Swarm” so buzzworthy.

Cattrall, who plays publicist Samantha Jones in “Sex and the City,” is expected to make a brief cameo appearance in the Max sequel series. Astronaut angst, ethically dubious documentarians, and a hit streaming series that literally becomes a black mirror of someone’s life — it’s all there in the new Season Six trailer for Black Mirror.

Sounds bad, but hey, who wouldn’t be at least a little flattered if they were being portrayed by...

Just when you thought it was safe to be on your phone again, the near-future sci-fi anthology series "Black Mirror" is returning to Netflix for season 6, with a star-studded cast and plenty more portents of doom.
Actually, though, this upcoming collection of stories won't just be another iteration of "what if phones, but too much." Creator Charlie Brooker told The Sunday Times that he's become "a bit bored" with the typical formula for the series. "I didn't want to be just hitting the same premises over and over again.
