- After her education at a boarding school in the Lake District she studied acting under Sir Frank Benson in 1930. Her first acting roles were in Shakespeare plays. mainly playing boys roles. She then joined the Nuneaton Repertory Theatre where she continued in Shakespeare but now in strong roles such as Cordelia, Ophelia, Cressida and Titania. On marrying in 1936 she gave up acting to raise her son and daughter.
