Il est connu pour Vivre sa vie (1962), Pile ou face (1980) et La grande vadrouille (1966). Il était marié à Danielle Bâtisse et Françoise Arnoul. Il est mort le 10 janvier 2009 à Paris, France.

- French journalist who was instrumental in establishing the Césars and thus is usually known as the "father" of the "French Oscar."
- On October 18, 1973, his second wife Danielle Cravenne, a manic-depressive, tried to hijack a Boeing 727 with false weapons at the airport of Marignane in what she claimed was a protest against the release of Les aventures de Rabbi Jacob (1973), a film produced by her husband and which she considered "anti-Palestinian". Fatally injured by French security forces, she died shortly afterward in an ambulance.
