It’s December 31st, and I’m sure you know what that means, dear reader… that’s right, it’s Val Kilmer’s birthday! Today we celebrate by examining the John Holmes crime pic Wonderland (2003), starring Kilmer as the fallen star.

I went into the proceedings expecting a more sweeping Boogie Nights-esque tale of an ill-fated career in the porn industry during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Boogie Nights, after all, was inspired by Holmes’s life. Instead, Wonderland is more focused on the days, weeks and months immediately on either side of the gruesome 8763 Wonderland Avenue murders in Laurel Canyon on July 1st, 1981. It is more of a microcosmic crime study than a sweeping cautionary tale. The “Four on the Floor Murders” quickly joined the ranks of the Manson family killings and the Black Dahlia murder as some of the most infamous crimes in 20th century Hollywood lore.

Even though James Cox is never expected to make the list when the best Hollywood directors are mentioned, the 45-year-old filmmaker's works have developed a cult following over the years. Cox can be compared to directors like Michael Bay, whose movies never get good reviews but feature a lot in discussions anyway.

It’s by far the worst opening of Spacey’s career, which peaked in 2006 with the $52.5 million debut of “Superman Returns.” His new crime drama earned just $126 on opening day from eight locations, and grossed $287 from 10 screens in its first two days in theaters.

Filmed in 2015 and released with no publicity following a VOD release last month, “Billionaire Boys Club” was one of Spacey’s final projects before he was hit with more than two dozen sexual misconduct accusations last fall.

“Billionaire Boys Club” isn’t living up to its name.

Vertical Entertainment’s crime drama starring Kevin Spacey, Ansel Elgort, Taron Egerton, and Emma Roberts picked up an anemic $618 when it debuted in 11 theaters across the United States. It reportedly launched with a disastrous $126 on Friday. “Billionaire Boys Club” played in various smaller cities, including the San Fransisco area, Phoenix, Minneapolis, Detroit, New Orleans, the Hartford/New Haven area, Miami and Sarasota, Florida.

James Cox directed the film, which is based on the real-life Billionaire Boys Club that was active in southern California in the ’80s — their get rich quick ponzi scheme collapsed in spectacularly bloody fashion. The film was first released through video on demand on July 17, which likely further depressed box office. However, allegations that Spacey sexually abused multiple people didn’t help matters.

Earlier this summer, Vertical Entertainment put out a statement defending its decision to release the film.

But the irony of the film’s inevitable failure is that Spacey — who delivers one of his great egomaniacal scenery-chewing performances — took the risk of playing a character dangerously...

Long before Kevin Spacey shows up as a hustling con man whispering “the perception of reality is more real than reality itself,” there’s no doubt that “Billionaire Boys Club” has issues. A slick Ansel Elgort plays Joe Hunt, the youthful L.A. investment firm honcho who racked up countless wealthy clients in a high-stakes Ponzi scheme before it all came crashing down; Taron Egerton is Hunt’s business partner, Dean Karny, who narrates the story. In the opening shot, Elgort sits smugly behind a pair of dark sunglasses as Egerton announces a credo in voiceover: “Fuck money. Being rich is about respect.”

The fetishization of wealth yielding power has been a cinematic trope from “Wall Street” to “The Wolf of Wall Street,” but “Billionaire Boys Club” turns it into a routine.

Even if the results are catastrophic, he somehow portrays their acts not as malicious and reprehensible, but as commendable endeavors gone wrong.

This questionable bro-bravado in ingrained in 2002’s “Highway” (starring baby-faced Jared Leto and Jake Gyllenhaal), his 2003 John Holmes crime drama “Wonderland,” with Val Kilmer as the lead, and the more recent “Straight A’s,” with Ryan Phillippe and Anna Paquin. For his latest, “Billionaire Boys Club,” Cox enlists rising stars like Ansel Elgort, Emma Roberts and Taron Egerton as well as a veteran (Kevin Spacey) who up until recently could have served as a prestigious hook for the enterprise.

Disgraced Hollywood star Kevin Spacey’s film “Billionaire Boys Club” will get a theatrical release this summer, despite his exile from the entertainment community, the film’s distributor told TheWrap on Monday.

The film, which was shot before Spacey’s #MeToo scandal hit last November, will see a digital and VOD rollout on July 17 followed by a limited theatrical run beginning Aug. 17. It’s fate in North America was up for debate last week after an international trailer from Malaysian distributor Tgv Pictures hit the web.

Just call writer-director James Cox the anti-Ridley Scott. Late last year, the filmmakers found themselves in the same unenviable position: Both had upcoming releases starring Kevin Spacey, who has now fielded more than 30 accusations of sexual misconduct from men and boys. Scott elected to replace Spacey with Christopher Plummer in December’s “All the Money in the World,” a switch that cost $10 million in reshoots.

Not only did Cox keep Spacey in his feature, “Billionaire Boys Club,” but the two-time Oscar winner has several bearded-and-bespectacled appearances in the first trailer, released Friday. Just yesterday, Universal Pictures unveiled a debut trailer for “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” that omits T.J. Miller’s character, even though he took part in the franchise’s first two entries and is expected to return for part three. Miller faces a sexual-assault allegation, and was recently arrested for falsifying a bomb threat.

Exclusive: Will Patton, Alicia Sanz, and Adan Canto, and Zach Avery have been tapped to star in a yet-to-be-titled horror film which will shoot in Kentucky next month. Brad Parker (Chernobyl Diaries) is directing the film from a script by Eric Scherbarth and Stefan Jaworski. Julio and Diego Hallivis are producing and financing the pic via 1inMM Productions.

The plot centers on a geological expedition to an Appalachian sinkhole that becomes a terrifying fight for survival against a mysterious deadly force.

Ansel Elgort is going to be pulling double duty on his next film. The “Divergent” actor will be portraying twin brothers in Bill Oliver’s independent film, “Jonathan.”

Per Deadline, who first reported the news, the movie tells the story of Jonathan, a successful architect who lives a normal life dictated by a strict routine. Jonathan’s twin brother John, on the other hand, sleeps all day and spends the night secretly socializing. When Jonathan discovers that John has a secret girlfriend, Elena, he forces John to end things and then starts a new relationship with her out of curiosity and jealousy. The brother soon finds out of his sibling’s betrayal and things spiral out of control.

The film is written by Oliver and Peter Nickowitz. Producers include Randy Manis and Ricky Tollman, with Neal Dodson executive producing.

Ansel Elgort is a rising star in Hollywood who has appeared in films such as the Divergent trilogy and The Fault in Our Stars, which I thought he did a great job in. The young actor is currently in negotiations to take on what would be the biggest role of his career so far. It looks like there's a good a chance that he will take on the lead role in Warner Bros. big screen adaptation of Dungeons & Dragons.

The movie will be directed by Rob Letterman, who is behind such films as Shark Tale, Goosebumps, and Gulliver's Travels. Letterman doesn't spark a lot of confidence in the project, but the script for the action adventure fantasy film was written by David Leslie Johnson (The Conjuring 2). I just hope Letterman doesn't cast Jack Black in the movie.

I think Elgort is a solid actor, and this could be an awesome project for him.

On the eve of the Efm, the project’s producer Cassian Elwes and executive producers Chris Lemole and Tim Zajaros of Armory Films have launched the production and finance venture Zeal Media Co.

The company will aim to make up to eight films a year and focus on “sophisticated, thought-provoking and talent-driven material in an effort to make high quality films that will be remembered.”

Billionaire Boys Club is based on the true story of young white collar murderer Joe Hunt and recently wrapped production.

James Cox directs Spacey, Elgort, Taron Edgerton, Emma Roberts, Jeremy Irvine, and Bokeem Woodbine.

Elwes jointly represents Us rights with CAA and produces the film with Holly Wiersma. Crystal Lourd and Jere Hausfater are on board as executive producers with the Armory duo.

The film will follow the rise and fall of Joe Hunt (Elgort) and Dean Karny (Egerton), who ran a Ponzi scheme called the Billionaire Boys Club in the early 1980s. The scheme collapsed when real billionaire Ron Levin (Spacey) discovered his investment turned out to be worthless.

Hunt turned to murder to raise funds and was convicted in 1987 of killing Levin, while Karny served as the state's witness in the trial. Waterhouse will portray Quintana, the love interest of Karny, while Emma Roberts has been cast as Hunt's love interest Sydney.

Deadline reports that Oscar-winning House of Cards star Kevin Spacey has joined the cast of two new movies, both of which coincidentally star young up-and-comer Ansel Elgort in a leading role.

First up, he's joining Edgar Wright's new action movie musical Baby Driver, in which he'll reportedly play a crime boss that convinces the title character (Elgort) to be a getaway driver for him. The outlet originally reported that Jamie Foxx was going to be playing the crime lord in that film, but though he's supposedly still in the movie, I guess this role has gone to Spacey and Foxx will be playing someone else. (It's unclear. Thanks, Deadline.) Jon Hamm plays a cop-killing bank robber and Lily James will play a waitress who is the female lead/love interest. The movie is scheduled to skid into theaters on March 17th, 2017, and you can read much more about it right here.

The story story deals with how financial genius Joe Hunt (Elgort) and tennis pro Dean Karny (Egerton) ran a Ponzi scheme which allowed them to lead a lavish lifestyle.

The scheme collapsed when the investment of high-roller Ron Levin (Spacey) turned out to be worthless and Hunt was convicted of killing Levin. Judd Nelson, Ron Silver and Brian McNamara took on the roles in a previous 1987 mini-series version.

The Oscar winner will play murdered Beverly Hills high-flier Ron Levin alongside Ansel Elgort and Taron Egerton on the project that Good Universe introduces to buyers this week.

Holly Wiersma and Cassian Elwes are producing and Elwes represents Us rights with CAA. Princpal photography is set to begin in New Orleans on December 7.

Armory Films finances and Tim Zajaros and Chris Lemole serve as executive producers alongside Crystal Lourd and Jere Hausfater.

James Cox directs Billionaire Boys Club from a script he co-wrote with Captain Mauzner.

Elgort will play financial whizzkid Joe Hunt and Egerton will portray his lieutenant Dean Karney who together lured the sons of rich families from the Harvard School For Boys into a ponzi scheme.

When their money ran dry Hunt and others resorted to murder, including the killing of Levin in the mid-1980s. Karny would later testify against Hunt at the murder trial.

Taron Egerton ("Kingsman: The Secret Service") and Ansel Elgort ("The Fault in Our Stars") are in final negotiations to team up for James Cox's true story tale "Billionaires Boys Club" at Armory Films.

Set in Los Angeles in the early 1980s, the story follows the rise and fall of two outsiders - financial genius Joe Hunt (Elgort) and tennis pro Dean Karny (Egerton) - whose investment pool propelled them into society's upper echelons.

Their lavish lifestyle and impressive returns obscured a snowballing fraud with the Ponzi scheme collapsing after an investment by Beverly Hills high-roller Ron Levin turned out to be worthless. Hunt was convicted in 1987 of the murder of Levin.

"Wonderland" director Cox will helm from a script he co-wrote with Captain Mauzner. Holly Wiersma and Cassian Elwes are producing.

The story was previously adapted into a 1987 mini-series with Judd Nelson, Brian McNamara and Ron Silver.

According to Variety, Nu Image/Millenium Films have signed Anna Paquin and Ryan Phillippe for Straight A’s, perhaps the most unassuming and unlikely comedy ever.

The film follows Phillippe’s character who, fresh from 10 years of stilted rehab, is pressed into returning to his family home by the ghost of his dead mother. Arriving back in Shreveport with nothing but a bag of pills and a stash of weed, he is faced with an ex who is still pining for him and – presumably – faced with making amends with his estranged son, played by The Beaver’s Riley Thomas Stewart.

Co-chairman of Nu Image, Avi Lerner had this to say of the film’s production:

“Shooting this film at our own production facility Millennium Studios reinforces our commitment to the state of Louisiana and its local economy.”

In addition to those two Hollywood beefcakes, the movie also stars Channing Tatum and Alex Pettyfer. "Magic Mike" is the semi-true story of Channing's time spent as an exotic dancer in Florida. In intriguing film casting news today, EW released the word that Anna Paquin and Ryan Phillippe would pair up for an independent comedy. Production is under way for Straight A’s. Paquin is most recognized for her role as sultry psychic Sookie Stackhouse in HBO’s addictive offering, True Blood. Once upon a time she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her work in The Piano when she just a child. She also played Rogue in 2000′s X-men. She is now married to her True Blood co-star.

Phillippe, on the other hand is the ex-husband of actress Reese Witherspoon. Two films he acted in, Gosford Park and Crash, have been Oscar nominated. Indian director S.V. Krishna Reddy helms the story of a happily married man who runs into his high school sweetheart and soul mate. One catch - he signed an iron-clad pre-nup and his wife won't let him get a divorce. Shooting will commence this month in Los Angeles.

Adam Scott will play the leading role in Stuart Zicherman's indie comedy "A.C.O.D." which will begin shooting in March.
