'True Grit' 2010: Hailee Steinfeld and Jeff Bridges. 'True Grit' 2010 review: 'Far Superior' to 1969 John Wayne Western I've gotten to the point with the Coen brothers where I just expect something wonderful every time they make a movie. For me, that was the case even with an effort like True Grit. For others, however, it was different. When the Coens announced their plans to adapt Charles Portis' novel, heads turned and were scratched by many. After all, not only were the brothers going to adapt a book, something they had done only once before (twice if you count The Odyssey), but they were going to remake a movie made famous by John Wayne in 1969. To many, especially lovers of Westerns, touching True Grit was sacrilege. But the Coens weren't deterred, and thankfully so. Their adaptation of True Grit is not only far superior to Henry Hathaway's 1969 version, it...

Word has come down the horror-loving highway that writer/director Tedi Sarafian‘s latest horror film, Sighting, has finished editing thanks to Andrew Coutts, editor for Saw VI and Saw 3D: The Final Chapter, and is now in audio post-production and seeking distribution.
The film stars Kristina Anapau (Black Swan, “True Blood”), Brendan Fletcher (Freddy vs. Jason), Alexis Cruz (Drag Me to Hell) and Ed Corbin (True Grit).
Details are on the scant side, but we can tell you that it’s about a ghost-hunting team that investigates King’s Ransom Winery in California, home to a sinister history of recurring suicides.

This is the review for True Grit, directed by Ethan Coen and Joel Coen, and starring Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, Jeff Bridges,Barry Pepper, Hailee Steinfeld, Domhnall Gleeson, Elizabeth Marvel, Ed Corbin and Paul Rae. Written by Nell Frizzell for Pure Movies. True Grit, the Coen Brothers’ remake of the 1969 John Wayne Western, suffers from one major problem. They appear to have cast my father in the lead role. Of course, this isn’t a unique problem; it happened with The Big Lebowski and Crazy Heart too. You see, as a rollie-smoking, cheek-chewing, phlegm-coughing, grey-haired man in dirty underwear and ratty beard, Jeff Bridges manages to play a perfect simulacrum of my father in most of his later films.

True Grit (2010) Film Review, a movie directed by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen and starring Hailee Steinfeld, Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and Barry Pepper.
Dialogue is the centrifuge around which this western and its characters find themselves willful ensnared, traps of their own verbal rendering. The materials for these contraptions were constructed by directors Joel Coen and Ethan Coen and the book of the same name on which True Grit is based.
The matriarchal Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) carries herself like an old soul but is an apparition encased in a fourteen year old’s body, much to the vexation of the actual adults she encounters. Steinfeld’s performance, in the way she composes Mattie and the minutiae of her characteristics, give off what her acting pedigree and stature contradict.
Most if not all of characters pause and stare when Mattie speaks verbosely with determination, force, and eloquence.

In May of 2007 (just prior to the nation’s economic collapse), this writer visited the set of the Bogner Entertainment and Trailer Park Partners production Trailer Park of Terror, a Southern-fried fright flick directed by country-music video director-turned feature filmmaker Steven Goldmann. Produced by Jonathan Bogner and Ralph Singleton (Pet Semetary) and based on the Imperium Comics of the same name, Trailer Park of Terror premiered the following year at Slamdance ’08, and was released to DVD that October via Summit Entertainment.
Starring Lew Temple and Priscilla Barnes (The Devil’s Rejects) and Nichole Hiltz, Duane Whitaker (Feast), Ed Corbin and Michelle Lee (among others), Trailer Park of Terror, regardless of its playfully sadistic EC Comics-vibe and inspired makeup designs by Todd Tucker, didn’t cause the waves its producers had predicted, and due to such, unfortunately derailed the planned feature franchise and television and comic book series. Perplexing, given the gonzo cocktail of sex,...

What praise can be heaped on the Coen’s that hasn’t already been said? What awards can be dished out? What adjectives can fit their genius for storytelling and cinematography? Well… that’s the one, isn’t it? Genius. Let me establish; I’ve never seen the original. And I’ll tell you what; I’m grateful for it. ‘Rollercoaster’ would describe it well, but the Chilli Peppers ‘Rollercoaster of Love’ would be more fitting. Epic, turning, moving and yearning, this is the finest film of the year to date (forgive me for not having yet seen Black Swan or the King’s Speech… tut tut.) But… I mean… come on.

There was a time when Joel and Ethan Coen, so rightfully highly regarded for their original screenplays and films, found their impeccable track record muddied by a brief rash of remakes and story adaptations. While this one-two punch of “Intolerable Cruelty” and “The Ladykillers” did them no favors roughly a decade ago, the triumph of their 2006 Cormac McCarthy adaptation and Oscar winner “No Country for Old Men” seemed to clarify that the primary fault of the former films may’ve been that they aren’t Westerns. (Yes, I’m one of those who consider “No Country…” a Western, if only perhaps a fringe one. Let’s go with “neo-western/noir”.) Taking any such lesson as that to heart, the Coen brothers are back, this time with an even higher-profile Western adaptation, “True Grit”…read more [TwichFilm]

Hailee Steinfeld and Jeff Bridges in True Grit
Photo: Paramount Pictures Don't get caught up trying to compare Joel and Ethan Coen's True Grit to the 1969 version that won John Wayne his one and only acting Oscar. There is no comparison. The two films aren't even within a thousand miles of one another.
Instead, look at this as a brand new adaptation of Charles Portis's novel of the same name. The brothers penned the screenplay themselves, tightening it up when necessary and while they'll tell you they pulled most of the dialogue directly from the novel (which they did), the subtle changes to key lines only make it that much better.
In an instance of obvious casting, Jeff Bridges was chosen to fill the shoes of the snarled and drunken U.S. Marshall, Rooster Cogburn. He's a weathered old man that loves to drink and tends to shoot first and ask questions later.

Five new posters from the Coen Brothers’ True Grit remake adaptation, which includes four gritty character sheets have been released. The posters are extremely well designed and we felt it was worth spotlighting on the site. Thanks to Beyond Hollywood for the find.

USAToday has five new images from the Coen Brothers’ upcoming remake of “True Grit”. There is also an article on the movie’s new star, Hailee Steinfeld, and her interaction with the guy-centric cast. Steinfeld’s bubbly personality contrasts with her character’s dark intensity. “My goal when I was filming was she would never be happy,” she says. “She’s trying to be as tough as she can be. A father would be the one to help her out of it, but she doesn’t have one.” Hiring Bridges’ Rooster Cogburn makes the two become begrudging surrogates. “The entire time, she’s testing to see if he can be like a father,” she says. Starring Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges, Josh Brolin, Barry Pepper, Domhnall Gleeson, Hailee Steinfeld, Paul Rae, Elizabeth Marvel, Dakin Matthews, Nicholas Sadler, Ed Corbin, Joe Stevens and directed by the brothers Coen. True Grit, the new Coen Brothers (Ethan and Joel) movie, is heading into cinemas Stateside this December, and the first hi-res photo from the movie has just pitched up online. The photo shows Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), in the same role that won John Wayne an Oscar for the 1969 original, as one-eyed sheriff Rooster and Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross.
Story centers on a 14-year-old girl (Steinfeld) who tags along with an aging Us marshal, Rooster Cogburn (Bridges), and another lawman to track the outlaw who killed her father. The original told the story from Cogburn’s point of view, but the new version will work from the viewpoint of the girl.
“I think [the book is] much funnier than the movie was so I think, unfortunately, they lost a lot of humour,”
Ethan Coen has said.
“It also ends differently than the movie did… [The book's] a lot tougher and more violent than the movie reflects.
