New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This final installment of 2024 features five selections reflecting the month of December in some way, shape or form.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include a Christmas slasher, a holiday-set creature feature, and more.

It’s hard to resist a horror movie starring both Vincent Price and Peter Cushing. Even harder when it’s as on the nose as Madhouse (or The Revenge of Dr. Death). Two seasoned genre veterans like Price and Cushing were not as in demand as they used to be when this flick first came out; horror cravings had already started to change by then. It’s been 30 years since Disney opened Beauty and the Beast on Broadway and since then, a Disney movie coming to the stage has been a regular thing. The successes are amazing, with The Lion King still running today on Broadway and London, and Frozen has become a successful touring production.
There have been a few misses like Tarzan, Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks and others. Yet it makes sense that Disney movies, which already use a lot of music and fantastic settings, easily lend themselves to a Broadway adaptation. There are reports that Tangled may be next, and no doubt others are being considered. With so many movies in the library, there’s still a lot that could be done.
Interesting is how some projects weren’t originally musicals yet somehow could fit that format. They boast great stories and seeing as how Broadway has been obsessed with turning...

Exclusive: Convexity Films, the production company of filmmaker Richard Dewey (Radical Wolfe), has optioned the Michael Lewis book The New New Thing: A Silicon Valley Story for development as a narrative feature.
The deal came together following Dewey’s collaboration with Lewis on his feature documentary Radical Wolfe, about author and journalist Tom Wolfe, which adapted an acclaimed Vanity Fair article from Lewis.
Published by W. W. Norton & Company in 1999, the bestseller is described as an insightful and engaging exploration of the dot-com boom and the technological innovations that fueled it. The book focuses on the life and ventures of Jim Clark, a Silicon Valley pioneer who founded three billion-dollar companies in the early days of the Internet: Silicon Graphics, Netscape, and Healtheon. Through the prism of Clark’s work, Lewis provides a look at the culture of innovation, risk-taking, and entrepreneurship that defined the late 20th-century tech industry.

If Joseph Kosinski’s last film “Top Gun: Maverick” is any metric, his next film “F1,” starring Brad Pitt and Damson Idris as teammates in the world of Formula 1 racing, is set up to be another propulsive, edge-of-your set experience about man’s bond with machine and the limits it can take you to.
Kosinski filmed actual scenes at last year’s British Grand Prix, as well as other races throughout the season, incorporating footage of actors actually behind the wheel of F1 vehicles along with real-life drivers like Lewis Hamilton.
In addition to Pitt and Idris, “F1” also boasts a cast that includes Kerry Condon, Javier Bardem, Tobias Menzies, Sarah Niles, Kim Bodnia, and Samson Kayo.
According to the official synopsis of the film, “F1” follows former Formula 1 driver Sonny Hayes (Pitt), who is lured back to the sport to partner rookie teammate Joshua Pearce (Idris) at the fictional Apxgp team.

Joan Vassos is set to appear this fall as the first-ever Golden Bachelorette. Vassos is familiar with the world of dating competitions. She appeared in Gerry Turner’s season of The Golden Bachelor and was a fan favorite before self-eliminating in week three. While Vassos is optimistic about her chances of finding love on The Golden Bachelorette, fans shouldn’t get prepped for another golden wedding. Vassos recently revealed wedding bells aren’t in her near future, despite being the lead on a dating show that regularly ends in engagement.
Joan Vassos isn’t getting married immediately after ‘The Golden Bachelorette’
Joan Vassos is excited about the prospect of finding her perfect match. Still, The Golden Bachelorette fans shouldn’t expect to see the mother of four and educator walk down the aisle on national TV just months after her season airs. Unlike Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist, Vassos is in no rush to marry.

Gerry Turner traded “I dos” with his TV soulmate Theresa Nist, as The Golden Bachelor‘s Golden Wedding aired live on ABC as a two-hour event. Some runner-ups cheered them on, like professional officiant Susan Noles, a previous vier for Turner’s heart who presided over exchanging vows during the event. Some drowned their sorrows and celebrated love, like runner-up Leslie Fhima and Kathy Swarts, the latter of whom hosted the show from the golden carpet with several shady lines throughout the evening. Others from the Bachelor Nation, like The Bachelor‘s latest couple, Brayden Bowers and Christina Mandrell, use the birds in the air to make some significant choices on air. But everything else meant nothing once the groom and bride started walking down the aisle. Check out the top 5 most unforgettable moments of The Golden Wedding below. William Goldman’s international conspiracy thriller provides Dustin Hoffman with an outright ‘action man’ star vehicle. The public applauded supporting star Laurence Olivier, who with just a few gestures creates a terrifying villain: “Is it safe?” William Devane and Marthe Keller co-star. We wish Roy Scheider’s character could have continued in a series of crime thrillers — he brings genuine movie star charisma. The story is by William Goldman, from his own book.

Disney’s mishandling of the “Don’t Say Gay” controversy has turned into an ongoing problem in Florida, as its unique role in state politics now faces scrutiny from critics on both the left and right.
Gov. Ron DeSantis has led the attacks, saying it was time to reevaluate the “special privileges” the company has received over the decades, including its wholly controlled fief, known as the Reedy Creek Improvement District. Disney is also taking heat from the left end of the political spectrum, which also has concerns over corporate influence, and is mad at the company for its generous donations to Republican politicians, including DeSantis.
It adds up to major headaches for the company’s three dozen lobbyists in Tallahassee, one of whom was quoted by NBC News blaming the Disney’s woes on “a total s— show response by corporate.”

John Schlesinger’s adaptation of Nathanael West’s novel is one of the best ‘Hollywood on Hollywood’ pictures ever, even if it soaks everything about The Golden Age of Tinseltown in an acid bath of cynicism. The perverse dystopia of dreams and vice is beautifully rendered in every respect, and culminates in a finale that caught ordinary audiences by surprise. Is this an indictment of the shallow aims of America’s Fantasyland, or one misanthrope’s vision of self-loathing and apocalyptic wish fulfillment? Don’t look for anyone to root for, as even the benign characters are moral freaks. Karen Black, Burgess Meredith, Donald Sutherland and William Atherton give utterly original performances; [Imprint] has a secured a great new interview extra with Atherton.

John Lewis came by his preacher’s cadence naturally. During his childhood, his first congregation was the flock of chickens populating his family coop. As a boy, the Georgia Congressman had been inspired by the Bible that an uncle gave him when he was four, giving him both a love of the Lord and an adoration of the written word. However, beyond that Bible, there weren’t many books in the Lewis household. They were very poor. They were black. And Jim Crow was alive in Troy, Alabama.

Bill Gavin, the former Goldcrest executive and general manager of Australia’s Hoyts Theatres, has died at the age of 83 at his home in Auckland, New Zealand, after a short illness.
Gavin moved to the UK in the early 1960s after securing a contract to cover New Zealand’s then highly successful Formula One drivers, going on to write a biography of UK driver Jim Clark. He segued initially into the music business and established Gto Films to promote glam rock acts, the company then branched into distribution and worked on the UK release of Weir’s classic Picnic At Hanging Rock and the original version of Swept Away.
In 1978 he moved to Australia to become general manager of Hoyts Theatres and spearheaded the company’s entry into distribution. His down under success distributing the first Muppet Movie caught the eye of Lew Grade, who invited him to join Itc Films’ sales team in London.

A million American GIs are bivouacked in the English countryside, awaiting debarkation to France… and the green fields are loaded with young English women, whose own men have been off fighting for years. John Schlesinger puts together a good drama, with an excellent cast; he also avoids the expected ‘please wait for me!’ clichés attendant to this subgenre of war film.

Midway through Nat Geo’s latest scripted-documentary hybrid “Valley of the Boom,” three lead characters are assassinated. Bradley Whitford being garroted in the middle of his own series may seem like a major spoiler, but it’s not even a surprise. For one, you’ve been watching the real-life man he’s playing — James Barksdale, 75, and very much alive — recount the same experiences direct to camera for the last three hours. For another, the assassinations are so choreographed, so slowly executed, so obviously over-the-top, that by the time Lamorne Morris’ imaginary “amalgam” of banker types shows up to explain that all these murders are just a metaphor for what happened to their business, the gesture is redundant — and as painful as a bullet to the brain.
“Valley of the Boom” isn’t always hard to watch. For anyone who makes it through the over-caffeinated first hour, there’s insight and...
